We currently cannot get FreeView via the set top box as our
transmitter is not enabled, nor is it scheduled for upgrading. Also we
dont have cable in our area.

Can anyone recommend the best way to get digital satellite kit so that
we can get Freeview?

Can we just buy the kit over Ebay and get a local installer to do the
job? Or do we need to go through Sky directly?

In order to get Freeview is their anything special we need to look out
for when buying the kit?

Any help will be appreciated

You can't get "Freeview" on satellite - if you want to do that you 
basically need a base Sky satellite package.

till it does, then sign up, pay the current minimum of 15 PCM and cancel on 
the 12 months.

You will then have fully installed a decent FreeView Sky setup for under 
200 over the year.

A one off 150 quid to Sky is probably the cheapest way to get it
bought and installed see here http://www.freesatfromsky.com/, you can
do it cheaper with second hand kit but you will probably end up
spending another 20 quid getting a "Free to View" card (see below)

You can't get "Freeview" on Satellite as such as that is the name for
digital terrestrial, however you can get many of the same channels
such as BBC3, BBC4, ITV2, ITV3, Men and Motors, Sky News etc

You won't get E4, E4+1, ABC1, UK History, UK Bright Ideas, ftn, Sky
Travel, TMF, The Hits and Sky Sports News that you get on digital
terrestrial as they are are pay channels on satellite, you will get
some others though not on "Freeview" such as CNN, Reality TV, Horror
Channel, EuroNews etc

True, but cancelling after 12 months will get you the odd mailing from SKY 
offering some good promotions, like free sports for 3 months and half price 
premium stuff, which the PVR will then kick in again.

Just an idea.

You could go the ebay route, but you normally do not get the dish, guarantee 
and installation that the above route will give you?.

Lidl had a kit last week around 50 great set made in Germany and no sub to 
pay many channels available

But did not have the Decoded, most free channels are coded, so a pile of 
pooh for 50.

Free to View and Free to Air are different.

Buy a cheap box and dish from ebay, a boot sale or your local
classified ads. (Cost ~30)

Buy a "Freesat" card from Sky (Cost 20).

Install it yourself. 

Sit back, enjoy.

Often this works out cheaper than Freeview. People don't take into
account that their TV aerial is often inadequate for freeview and
needs to be upgraged, adding another 80 plus to the overall cost.

will be significantly cheape than Skys 150 option.

Even if the new Box costs only 40 quid, Dish and LNB 25 quid, cable 5
quid, that leaves only 80 quid per installation for someone to turn up
with ladders and tools (drill etc) in a van and sight a dish (requires
even more equipment) and run the cable - I wouldn't expect BBC/ITV to
employ men in a van for that little profit.  
Remember Sky have an incentive on selling their boxes at around cost
as they would like to entice the new digital satellite viewer to
subscribe to pay channels, ITV/BBC have no pay channels.

It *is* effectively the Sky option.

All that is changing is that the ITV/Freesat channels are going FTA,
which means you'll no longer have to purchase a smart card to view
ITV.

The new Freesat channels will still be receivable on a Sky box.
Indeed, a Sky box will give access to additional FTV channels.

All ITV/BBC are doing is setting up a 'boquet' of Free to view
channels that'll still be available via a Sky box.

All it means is you'll be able to buy a FTA satellite receiver and get
the Freesat channels. There will be very little (If any) cost saving
over the 150 sky box.
