OT - (very) Anyone speak chinese?
My apologies, I know this is way off topic but this seems to be the
friendliest and probably most diverse group on the net. I've been given a
pendant with Chinese writing on and I don't know what it says. I'd rather
not wear it until I know (can just imagine the possibilities of THAT
scenario).
I can't accurately reproduce the writing so there's a photo of it here:

Many many thanks

Thank you for your help. Is that particularly significant do you think? I'm
trying to work out just why I've been given it!

All Argos pendants are significant in some way.

Were you looking for "Wind" or "Fart"? ;0)
Either way, I am inclined to agree with the other person. The symbols do
not look Chinese in formation although I am no expert.

If you go to www.google.co.uk and click on images and then type in 'Chinese
Symbol for air' it will show air.gif from www.chinesesymbolsmeaning.com.
Don't go to that website as it installs a dodgy dialler I think.
However, the symbols are clearly two words, so if one word is Air, what is
the other? It is possible it is saying something like Air Energy or
something which is the Chinese way of referring to inner strength.

It's not one character per word always. The first character means empty (as
in the Japanese Kara-oke, Empty orchestra) and the second means spirit or
mind - together air. The Chinese seem to use a slightly different variant of
this second character for "air" - not sure if they use this one at all to be
honest. So in my mind it's Japanese. 1 word, 2 characters.

What you say is probably true in some cases, but the chinese word for air is
a one syllable (or word) word. It may be different in Japanese, so maybe
that's it. However, if its chinese, it would be interesting to know what
the other word is.

My Chinese colleague says it means 'empty air' but it's not very well
written - some parts of the characters have been over emphasised, and the
second character 'air' has been over simplified. It just refers to the air
that you breath. If you dig really really deep, it could kind of signify
freedom or survival.
Hope this helps.
