has been referred to before. If there is a desire to use vulgarities at
least spell it correctly viz a-r-s-e-h-o-l-e. I often wonder how Americans
pronounce a-r-e . Can some linguist give us guidance?At the same time
perhaps the same person could explain how an innocent quadruped - an ass -
became associated with the general area of the rectal orrifice?

Arsehole and asshole are two different words with the same definition. The
former is an almost exclusively British usage, whilst the latter is popular
in America but is spreading overseas.

rhyme with how us northerners pronounce "glass".

It is only the Americans who confused asses with arses. We kept a separate
word for the rear-end.
