Best deals for 28" and 32" telly's ?
I think we are getting close to saying "Sayonara" to our trusted old
Toshiba, from 1998, picture still fine, teletext is knackered - sometimes
works, most often doesnt - and one or two other minor things have stopped
working but colour etc, still excellent. But I'd like to know best deals out
there - but NOT one of those "Made in Turkey" ones that all the cheapies
seem to be from Bush and all the other corner cutters. Preferably another
Tosh, but I noticed some have THREE scart connections in the back (JVC the
first I noticed for this) and I like that idea.
Has anyone any good deal to spread ? ;-)

Also low end Toshiba's, JVCs and several other brand names use "Made in
Turkey" ones - the same ones in the budget brands just badged up as the brand
name.

Problem with the three scart ones is that most times they still only have
one RGB input.

Well. If you want a Tosh then buy the 32ZP46 or 48 (5.1 decoding and
external speakers). Comes 3 scarts and RCA component i/p's 2 scarts are RGB
enabled. This produces a rather excellent picture and very good sound to
boot. Uses Activision technology, a bit like Philips Pixel+. I'd advise a
view of it though as the picture is of a rather rosy nature rather than
natural (it cannot be adjusted to look natural!). It has 3 viewing modes
though, Normal, Warm and Cool... a bit like a colour temperature control on
a PC monitor.

A more natural picture alternative and better built but poorer sound and
without 5.1 decoding is the Panasonic 32PD50.
This has 4 (yes 4) scarts and RCA component i/p's. 2 are
RGB/S-Video/composite enabled. 1 is S-video/composite enabled and 1 just
plain composite (ideal for a video recorder i/p). This uses Panasonics
Acuity processing that increases the line scan to 833 with 75Hz picture
processing. Normal 100Hz is also possible.
Added benefit of the Panasonic is PIP (picture in picture) and PAP (picture
and picture) and multi window picture (allows all analogue channels to be
seen at the same time).
This also has 3 viewing modes as Tosh.

Both do progressive scan.

These are my top 2 recommendations. Both can be had for similiar money which
is around 600 which is at present a bargain because the Tosh was about
1200 last year and the Panny about 1300.

There are about another 3 I would consider but I doubt any of them are such
a bargain.

If you look at the lower range of Toshiba's Widescreen CRT's they all
exhibit a very similiar picture to it's top of the range CRT model so I
doubt they use any cheap and nasty third party parts in their sets. However
to keep costs down they may well be put together in a cheaper labour country
and the casing may well be some *off the shelf* job.

I've got the Toshiba 32ZP48. I'm really pleased with it and I doubt you'd
find a better TV at that price (about 650 last time I looked). I've never
used the built in DD5.1 though as I've got a separate amp, but it'll
probably do the trick. If size is a factor but you don't want to compromise
the screen size then this is the one to go for as it is a picture frame TV.
It's a lot smaller than our old 28" TV.

IMV Sony make the best integrated Freeview sets as they are a direct replica
of a tuner of the VTX-D800 stb which provides a top notch picture.

Look at the KD-28DX200 or the 32DX200 (32") Both use DRC-MF which is some
sort of picture control. Constantly monitoring the signal, adjusting as
required.

Otherwise look at the KV-32FQ86 plain vanilla. This uses Picture power which
is a novel way of controling contrast and brightness to provide ideal
sharp(er) images. It does this by sampling light and dark areas.

With Sony's though the Trinitron tube is always a drawback for some due to
it's inability to provide any front to back depth in great proportion. Plus
side I always find is it's great rendition of natural colours.

For the best in front to back depth you need to look at a Philips or Loewe
but niether I believe do integrated Freeview sets.

Price wise You'll have to look yourself as I'm not to sure on these.

No, I'm afraid they do indeed use the same chassis and just get their casing
put on it.

Your mind then thinks oh it's a Toshiba the picture looks great, yet the same
TV with a cheaper brand name on it your mind say 'Oh it's a cheapy the picture
ain't so good!'

Open a Toshiba TV and see how may parts are actually Toshiba, even on their
high-end TVs, all manufacturers buy in ICs from anywhere and everywhere.

You made me laugh with your "cheap and nasty parts" comment.

It is in fact only the casing that is any different.

What chassis would that be then? You seem rather knowledgable in this area.
The type of picture on a Tosh seems rather unique, certainly for the
widescreen sets..

Doesn't surprise me one bit. That goes for any manufacturer. Their not in
the business of component design and manufacture.

Good for a laugh at times :-) Lesser spec'd is what I really meant.

When you find the telly you want buy it from John Lewis (who price match
other retail shops)
as you will then get a "Free" 5 year warranty.

http://www.bennettsonline.co.uk/ who have retail shops was the cheapest I
could find my Panasonic 32" for and John Lewis reduced
there's by 210 to match it.

Yeah I did that with my Sony too, they dropped by about 300 and I went
there and got the free 5 year warranty. Amazing deal.
