I quite like BVE, mainly because its free and there's a few decent
routes around. I haven't used it for a while though and not sure what
the new version is like.

The new BVE Version 4 is excellent. It now features pretty realistic
simulations of AWS and TPWS, accurate signalling and much improved
interaction with the train. You can even start and stop the engines of
diesel trains. Graphics are much improved with realistic rain, fog and
lighting effects.

Highly recommended is the Birmingham Cross City South route, by Anthony
Bowden and the new BVE 4 Class 37.

Google should give you all the help you need with links etc. Look out
for specific BVE 4 routes - the selection is more limited than earlier
routes, but it is building up and the quality is excellent.

Enjoy!

Chris.

I know it's me but I get thoroughly confused when trying to install BVE.

I've never successfully installed it. :-(

I used to own MSTS but uninstalled that piece of junk just a few months
after it was released and gave it away.

http://www.bve-routes.com is a good place to look for routes and you
can search for ones specific to BVE 4

I'm not sure if this helps, but I've successfully installed
several versions, on Win/2000 Pro. Not yet version 4, though.
Currently this laptop has (after a quick check!) 2.6.3.

Installing some extra routes and vehicles isn't always so successful:
mostly because they assume the existence of some items from another
route etc., which the route's author forgot to say was needed. BVE
simply refuses to run a route if it can't find some of the objects
called out from the route file, IME.

Signals can also be a bit of a problem in the versions I've run, since
the original Japanese signals are to some extent ingrained in the BVE
program (in the versions I've run). I've got a German prog called
"Signalinstaller", which swaps the signals between the original
Japanese, British (mainline), "London Underground", and various other
possibilities, but it, and the accompanying graphics, are designed for
a previous BVE version, and they don't quite fit (there are blue
haloes and other artefacts around the signal graphics in this version
2.6.3). And the Signalinstaller prog seemed to be no longer available
when I last searched for it.

Sorry to hear that. I've had some pleasure out of it. If you have
any specifics, perhaps someone (even me!) could help, but I'm not sure
if such discussions are welcome on uk.r, the program rarely gets much
of a mention here.

A friend of mine had "Trainz" but I didn't get on with that - it relies too
heavily on the mouse and "loading" screens. More like an adventure game than
a simulator.

I use BVE 4, My current favourite route is Maybank - Hammerwich (a fictional
route based on the West Midlands area). As a Driver of real trains I have
found that it is very realistic when it comes to braking distances, train
handling etc. The BVE 170s for example still take ages to get to 100mph,
just as 17020x did on the 07:51 from Norwich almost every morning making it
late.

BVE is good fun but steer clear of MSTS-quite simply, its crap.

It's a bit buggy, but its not crap, and with the LSE add-on (if you live in
the area), it's great! I particularly like the lineside views (except near
London Bridge!).

Could I ask anyone who upgraded to BVE version 4 (from one of the BVE
2.* versions - was there ever a version 3 - it seems not!) whether it
overwrites the earlier version? I'm wondering whether to download
version 4, but - having what, for the most part, is a nicely working
version 2.whateveritwas, I'm scared of wrecking it by installing a new
version on top of it.

thanks.

If you rename your existing BVE folder as BVE2, you can then install
BVE4 in a new BVE (or BVE4) folder, and the two should remain separate.
AFAIK, all the stuff you download goes into the folder you specify, or
its subfolders.

"should", I agree; but if stuff is registered in the Windows registry,
it seems all bets are off. Case in point: I had a nicely working
version of Polycom Viavideo 5: I renamed its folder, and installed the
trial version of its successor, Polycom PVX (which allows only 5
minutes working before turning into a pumpkin), and damn me if the
working version 5 hadn't been totally nuked, despite the renaming.

So I'd prefer an actual user report, rather than a "should remain
separate" - no offence meant.

cheers

I have both versions installed. The installer gives you the option of
choosing a directory for each installation. I just put version 4 in a
different directory, and both versions seem to work fine.

I haven't any more (because I got a new computer and went BVE 4 only)
but I have had BVE 2.xx and BVE 4 working together just fine in the
past. They don't seem to interact at all.

Just don't forget that you need the Microsoft .Net Framework installed
(you can download from www.microsoft.com) for BVE 4 to work.

A good place for the discussion of all things BVE is the Trainsim.com

Don't be put off by the URL, it is correct - don't know why it mentions
flightsim...

Well glad you liked it.
The lineside views around London Bridge are caused by a limitation in
MSTS, we had to use scenery objects for the embankment and the camera
will go through scenery objects unlike it will for 'ground'. If we
could have figured out a way of solving it we would have.

The new BVE is great, I have to confess that its really rammed home how
average the driving experience is in MSTS.

I currently have bothversions 2 and 4 co-installed.
While I do prefer the realism in V4, it is harder to learn routes as you
don't get the advance warnings that you had the right pane of V2.

It would be helpful if there were route maps available showing the
locations of speed changes, stations, signals, etc. Didn't BR issue
these to new drivers at one point?
