Moore's letter to Bush
I couldn't have put this better myself.

"Friday, September 2nd, 2005

Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and
thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on
earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help
finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a
drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really
use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping
with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of
Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it
was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still
homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its
way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you
didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get
bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers
to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to
Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't
let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and
what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you
specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans
this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if
you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any
Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important
construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was
moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as
you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster.
Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble
and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use
it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to
nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen
because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making
a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming
Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so
wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York
to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent
of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no
transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not
like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people
on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing --
NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters
and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast
are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore"

I couldn't have put it better either. It has been an education watching your

Isn't it amazing, the speed at which an idea can travel round the world
now. I got the same letter from an American friend living in Holland at
5pm yesterday.

But don't you think that a point has been reached where Bush can't do
right for doing wrong? Ellis Hennican (Newsday) was having a go at him
today for reminiscing about getting drunk in New Orleans and I thought
that was a bit hard on the guy. I'm surprised MM didn't write that
sooner than Friday.

I loved the president's words of wisdom on Thursday on the price of gas
which is spiralling up towards $4 a gallon hereabouts. This is a real
crisis for Americans. It hurts them a lot to pay over $50 to fill the
tank (20-22 quid)of their dirty great ugly hulking SUVs. I saw a queue a
quarter of a mile long for gas at $2.99 a gallon on Thursday, twice what
it was a year ago. He said with a Shrub shrug: "If you don't need gas,
don't buy gas!" But Americans do need gas and lots of it. So nobody has
been asked to moderate their use of their vehicles, keep their speed
down, or use smaller cars, and reserves have been released to keep the
price down. Gee. What a guy!

The TV news can manage to haul onto the screen some clearly delusional
white guy who is grateful that the President has graced them with his
presence and that all will now be well, and some irritated Bush
apologist to say that it's disrespectful to the victims to politicise
the slow response while the bodies still lie unburied. (Like their loved
ones have access to a TV to hear it.)

the locals on another group I frequent were moaning about the price of gas
and how it would curtail our travel. They didn't appreciate me telling them
at $4 a gallon our work future is so brilliant we'll have to wear shades
inside the building. So what if the price has doudled or tripled, I'll just
work an extra hour or two to cover the cost. BFD.

He does tend to be a bit onesided to get his message across, like you
say. But, there is still truth in what he says. You
shouldn't believe all his critics.

Have you seen Roger and Me? It's a movie he made long before F 9/11 or
even Bowling for Columbine. I think you might find it interesting.

You couldn't be more wrong, Barry.

Planning on being a useless right-wing politician, are you?
You're on the right track.

MM is unapologetically and deliberately extreme left to parody
the extremists in the right-wing - 90% of the american media,
republican politicians and many wacko american religious leaders
like Pat Robertson (who called for the assassination of the
Venezuelan Prime Minister last week - a godly thing to do don't
you think?).

You've got a lot of learning to do in uni, Barry.

Thank you, my sweet. I do wish for miracles in my quiet moments. I'm kinda
irritated because I see the people of the floods who have had everything
taken away from them, while tomorrow I am about to throw away a fridge, a
cooker, a set of drawers and a cupboard. I phoned a flea market thingie and
asked if they would have them and the reply was-we have too much already.

Hmm. I was sure I was right, and googling threw up both versions of the
name, but the Scotsman (which I trust in these matters, especially because
of his connection with the Royal Bank of Scotland a few years back) spells
it Robertson, so I guess it must be so.

Nice to know your wife and I can wear the same tartan.

They suddenly get up and walk out, here, now and have a smoke and a puff
outside. That means that people from different tables associate outside and
it looks like they really enjoy it.

That`s starting to happen here, there`s a lot less smoking in the pub,
someone actually asked us if we minded if he smoked one night - I said I
didnt care if he burst into flames as long as he didnt do it near me.

Thanks for that, Ally. I will get Erica to have a look. In the past the

not exactly a popular person in some quarters. After shooting his mouth off
a couple of weeks ago the Venezuelans rounded up the US engineers and
designers working on the oil refinery and put them back on a plane to the
US. So Robertson (head of a 0.5 billion $$$$$$$$$ tax free empire) by
opening his mouth single handedly put a bunch of US people out of work.

Hmm. A quick google reveals a big round brooch with various things dangling
from it. Rather nice but a bit more ornate than the ones used for holding
the plaid. These were circular, with a hole in the middle, and a small gap
at one side (sort of C-shaped) and held on with a big thick pin that was
attached at one end by a loop to the C-shape. Hard to describe really. I'll
need to find a pic for you...

I think there's a common theme here, though. A definite similarlity. I
wouldn't be surprised if these Scots brooches originated with Viking
jewellery.

Here's the sort of thing I'm thinking of, though it's not quite right as the
big pin in the centre should be loose, and the one in this pic looks like
it's soldered on to the big ring with a modern brooch pin on the back. But
it's the right sort of shape.

I figure he's earned a Bush cabinet post. Or maybe Bush will
replace Brown or Chertoff with Robertson.

My guess is Robertson was just repeating what Cheney had said
during a round of golf...

read somewhere recently in someone's rant on a local group that one of
Robertson's "charities" headed by his wife has taken in $25mm of Fed money
under the shrub "faith based initiative policy". Gggggrrrrrhhh.

I had a head hunter call me early this morning wanting to know if he could
put my name in for a task force to work on a FEMA contract in New Orleans.
I declined.

Good decision.

You know, I'm getting the impression there are some serious

Well of course I am aware of that, my point (and opinion) is that MM
isn't a great deal better than the politicians he is trying to
embarrass. If people think I am wrong/niave/whatever - I'm merely
expressing my opinion on the knowledge that I have.

I'm going to university so I can gain more knowledge and find out how
things work in Politics, if I had 10p for every comment such as "ahhh
you'll be in No. 10 in no time" just because I'm going to study
politics, then I'd have a small fortune

My point would be that just because MM is intentionally as
extreme left as his targets are extreme right, that doesn't make
them equal. MM exposes the way governments and businesses
exploit and harm the poor and down-trodden in pursuit of power
qand wealth rather than defend them as they are sworn to do.

The commonly heard argument that both are as bad as each other
is nonsense. Yet you hear it all the time. Especially in the
media who use it to avoid taking a stand or doing their jobs
rooting out evil. By hand-waving and dismissing both sides as
'just as bad as each other' they think they appear
jouralistically neutral but in fact they are dropping the ball
big time.

I reckon that the original states who declared independence would be
better off claiming independence from the lot they defeated in the Civil
War, along with California, and the other West Coast States and Hawaii,
who have no time for Bush and his Ilk. Europe and Australia and New
Zealand and the rest of the civilised world could work with them.

Thanks, Tania. I apologise. I didn't think properly. I remember learning
that when my son was doing Middle School History.

Mallard Fillmore published this cartoon today (syndicated nationwide) in
memory of the victims and heroes of the terrorist attacks on September
11th, 2001. It is a conservative strip, and highly critical of liberals.
But this is wishful thinking, and there seems to be so much division in
the country, and so clearly a vast gap between the wealthy in New
Orleans, who had means and connections and the poor there who clearly
did not.

This may well be an invalid link after today (Sunday September 11th) but
it shows an American Eagle with the caption "One Nation, under God,
indivisible." It is the only strip in my paper which does make any
reference to the anniversary.

Parents with teenagers should check out the Zits link below the strip.

It was rumoured he might show at the Keswick boink last April
but he didn't appear.

I simply remember all his posts regarding his hopeless life. We
all posted thoughtfull, sensitive advice in return.

He ignored all of it.

Now he shows up again after a year of self-discovery and
maturation and publically says he can't stand Michael Moore.
Barry should have 'Beware of Idiot' tatooed on his forehead.

But other than that, I wish him well.

Re: Moore's letter to Bush
Just for Barry's edification and to save J from posting it
later, here's Michael Moore's latest:

To All My Fellow Americans Who Voted for George W. Bush:

On this, the fourth anniversary of 9/11, I'm just curious, how
does it feel?

How does it feel to know that the man you elected to lead us
after we were attacked went ahead and put a guy in charge of
FEMA whose main qualification was that he ran horse shows?

That's right. Horse shows.

I really want to know -- and I ask you this in all sincerity
and with all due respect -- how do you feel about the utter
contempt Mr. Bush has shown for your safety? C'mon, give me
just a moment of honesty. Don't start ranting on about how
this disaster in New Orleans was the fault of one of the
poorest cities in America. Put aside your hatred of Democrats
and liberals and anyone with the last name of Clinton. Just
look me in the eye and tell me our President did the right
thing after 9/11 by naming a horse show runner as the top man
to protect us in case of an emergency or catastrophe.

I want you to put aside your self-affixed label of
Republican/conservative/born-again/capitalist/ditto-
head/right-winger and just talk to me as an American, on the
common ground we both call America.

Are we safer now than before 9/11? When you learn that behind
the horse show runner, the #2 and #3 men in charge of
emergency preparedness have zero experience in emergency
preparedness, do you think we are safer?

When you look at Michael Chertoff, the head of Homeland
Security, a man with little experience in national security,
do you feel secure?

When men who never served in the military and have never seen
young men die in battle send our young people off to war, do
you think they know how to conduct a war? Do they know what it
means to have your legs blown off for a threat that was never
there?

Do you really believe that turning over important government
services to private corporations has resulted in better
services for the people?

Why do you hate our federal government so much? You have voted
for politicians for the past 25 years whose main goal has been
to de-fund the federal government. Do you think that cutting
federal programs like FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers has
been good or bad for America? GOOD OR BAD?

With the nation's debt at an all-time high, do you think tax
cuts for the rich are still a good idea? Will you give yours
back so hundreds of thousands of homeless in New Orleans can
have a home?

Do you believe in Jesus? Really? Didn't he say that we would
be judged by how we treat the least among us? Hurricane
Katrina came in and blew off the facade that we were a nation
with liberty and justice for all. The wind howled and the
water rose and what was revealed was that the poor in America
shall be left to suffer and die while the President of the
United States fiddles and tells them to eat cake.

That's not a joke. The day the hurricane hit and the levees
broke, Mr. Bush, John McCain and their rich pals were stuffing
themselves with cake. A full day after the levees broke (the
same levees whose repair funding he had cut), Mr. Bush was
playing a guitar some country singer gave him. All this while
New Orleans sank under water.

It would take ANOTHER day before the President would do a
flyover in his jumbo jet, peeking out the widow at the misery
2500 feet below him as he flew back to his second home in DC.
It would then be TWO MORE DAYS before a trickle of federal aid
and troops would arrive. This was no seven minutes in a
sitting trance while children read "My Pet Goat" to
him. This was FOUR DAYS of doing nothing other than saying
"Brownie (FEMA director Michael Brown), you're doing a heck of
a job!"

My Republican friends, does it bother you that we are the
laughing stock of the world?

And on this sacred day of remembrance, do you think we honor
or shame those who died on 9/11/01? If we learned nothing and
find ourselves today every bit as vulnerable and unprepared as
we were on that bright sunny morning, then did the 3,000 die
in vain?

Our vulnerability is not just about dealing with terrorists or
natural disasters. We are vulnerable and unsafe because we
allow one in eight Americans to live in horrible poverty. We
accept an education system where one in six children never
graduate and most of those who do can't string a coherent
sentence together. The middle class can't pay the mortgage or
the hospital bills and 45 million have no health coverage
whatsoever.

Are we safe? Do you really feel safe? You can only move so far
out and build so many gated communities before the fruit of
what you've sown will be crashing through your walls and
demanding retribution. Do you really want to wait until that
happens? Or is it your hope that if they are left alone long
enough to soil themselves and shoot themselves and drown in
the filth that fills the street that maybe the problem will
somehow go away?

I know you know better. You gave the country and the world a
man who wasn't up for the job and all he does is hire people
who aren't up for the job. You did this to us, to the world,
to the people of New Orleans. Please fix it. Bush is yours.
And you know, for our peace and safety and security, this has
to be fixed. What do you propose?

I have an idea, and it isn't a horse show.

Yours,
Michael Moore

I've met Barry several times, and I can attest to the fact that as he's got
older, he has definitely improved. I saw masses of potential when I first
met him, but I suspect he was unaware of his potential. He's growing up (I
won't say 'maturing' - that might be going too far) and learning how to live
inside his own body and make the most of it. Give him time. I may not agree
with his politics but I think he's turning out to be a decent young man who,
far from making women run away screaming, might actually find he's drawing
them towards him like a magnet. We shall see...

Well, I hope that when he becomes a politician, he cracks down on
criminality, brings back capital punishment and looks after old people like
me.

I see what you mean. That was to the point. I can see why you would admire
and agree with Mr Moore. He talks a lot of sense. I wonder if he's available
to eulogise Tony Blair in the same way?

Miserable old devil! Gi' us your vote, pleeeeeeeeeease.

How are you this morning, Edith? It's market day here today and a fine day
was promised. But it rained while we were up town! I've done a days work
already - probably before you were up! We now have the shower basin plumbed
in and the tiles go on next.

I wish I could say without pain but my blooming neck and shoulder etc etc
blah blah blah, otherwise, fine. The weather is beautiful, cool, little
wind, Autumn around the corner. Just my style.

It's market day here today and a fine day

> was promised.

Ther is a market here every day selling only fruit, vegetables and flowers.
In the summer once in a while a different stall pops up. A Grandma sat
knitting various pure wool garments all summer this year. I started sweating
just passing her. Woolen jumpers, gloves, mittens etc in Norwegian style.
Fine work but double the price of jumpers in the shops that one can put in
the washing machine and tumble dryer.

But it rained while we were up town!

We have, again been spared for the down pours here. Worse on the west coast
is Bergen that has just had a serious landslide, on a smaller scale yet
covered houses, killed one person so far, evacuation happening now. I think
they should put the rain forests back asap

I've done a days work

> already - probably before you were up!

I was up at 8 today. I haven't done anything except turn the washing machine
on, fried eggs for my breakfast and sat watching TV which can be extreme
depressing at time, mostly always. I can't believe the foster parents in
Ohio who had children from 1 year old to 9 in cages, in Ohio. Gees some
foster parents.

We now have the shower basin plumbed

> in and the tiles go on next.

Now that's what I call good news. I'll expect photos. Your bathroom looked
Victorian on the photos, npi, it was like something from a fairytale.
Orlando is about to fix up his toilet and bathroom. He's got as far as,
cough, buying paint for the walls.

I am in the middle of a painting at the moment. I had to give it a rest
because of my arm. The worst is done. Now I look forward to giving the
painting some life and detail. It's a cabin by a track out in the woodland,
with fells in the back ground.

Yes, thankgawd. Tips to all voters here-after. Never-vote for a religious
leader. All they do is screw up the whole system to the negative and all
you'll get out of it is a few old churches being done up. Talk about one
track minds.

You would know better than I. But I find it difficult to accept
he will turn out to be a decent man when his political views are
clearly taking him toward the dark side.

And it's Barry who insists on publicising his personal life in
spite of warnings from us so why apologise?

One can criticise MM style but not his content nor his genuine
desire to affect change.

I'd be shocked to learn that Tony Blair had not seen MM's
'Bowling for Columbine'. Everyone should.

We don't have that sort of family gatherings.

My wife's family used to sing a lot at gatherings. They are
related to you though. A rousing chorus of 'I've seen pubic
hair'[1] was always a mainstay.

Johnny-not-a-singer

1. I've Seen Pubic Hair, MacLean and MacLean (sung to the tune
of "I've been Everywhere") known by heart by all true
Canadians...

Pubic Hair Song Lyrics

I was having me a burger in a dirty greasy-spoon cafe.
I was eatin' it with relish when the man beside me turned to
say,
"What's that pubic hair doin' layin' in your bun?"
I said,"I never saw it sittin' there, are you sure it's really
one?"
He stood up on the table, and said,"Now looky here,
"I've traveled all over this country, and I know pubic hair."

(CHORUS):

"I've seen pubic hair, man. I've never liked 'em there, man.
I've even got my share, man, beneath my underwear, man.
Stickin' out here and there, man. I've seen pubic hair.

"I've seen great ones, straight ones, always-on-your-plate
ones,
Long ones, strong ones, little curly blonde ones,
Red ones, dead ones, layin'-on-the-head ones,
Black ones, brown ones, little ducky-down ones,
Short ones, thick ones, growin'-from-your-dick ones,
Grown ones, shown ones, lone ones, chrome ones.

(CHORUS)

"I've seen bushy ones, cushy ones, up-against-your-pussy ones,
Saved ones, shaved ones, floatin'-in-your-gravy ones,
Dirty ones, flirty ones, fluffin'-up-the-birdy ones,
Neat ones, sweet ones, on-the-toilet-seat ones,
Hipper ones, gripper ones, catch-'em-in-the-zipper ones,
Grown ones, shown ones, lone ones, phony ones

(CHORUS)

Oh admit it - you enjoyed it really, didn't you? Anyway, you also acted on
my advice about your route back to your cottage, and it was the most direct
journey you'd made all year.

to digress slightly, when in Key West aka Queer West a couple of decades ago
I visited the Hemmingway Museum. He and his wife at the time he lived in
Key West had a large brood of cats unique because they all had six toes on
each foot. (A decendant of the Hemmingway cats can be purchased). They
live on the grounds and have a large water bowl. Seems that Ernest was a
regular at the local bar and noticed that the owner was refurbishing the
establshment and had rubble and other stuff lying on the site. Ernest spied
a urinal stacked in a corner and after pronouncing that he had pissed enough
money up that one to have paid for it a thousand times over, hoisted on his
shoulder and walked home with it, passing the large oak tree nearby that
bares a plaque "Hemmingway pissed on this tree". The urinal is now
installed with running water and serves as the cats water bowl

Two comments:

1) MM will tell you face-to-face that he does what he does on
purpose. He designs his ambush attacks to be of the same style
and stupidity as the right-wing extremists he is exposing. He
has told many an interviewer he'll apologise for it when they
do.

2) I think he is very accurate with his facts. His books are
all referenced, just as are Al Franken's. Remember, he's doing
what he does in the USA, the most litigious state in the
world. If he makes a claim, he can back it up or he's going to
be sued. So that's why his stuff is so shocking. He exposes
outragious things but they are true. I ranted in a post last
week about the danger of dismissing what he says because 'he's
no better than they are'. I'll spare you a repeat of that.
Don't assume he's making stuff up though.

I can't remember such details. But I'll say this, if he's even
half right with his facts, America is in deep trouble. And as
I said above, I think he does his best to get his facts
straight.

And given the total cock-up that Iraq is, you got lucky not
being mentioned.

A few years ago I would have agreed with you that it's wrong
to call them idiots. But they just keep proving they are
idiots. Over and over and over. I blame them for forcing me to
call them idiots. They are so blatently stupid that a person
would have to be an idiot themselves if they agreed with them.

We have more than two parties here in Canada just like you
guys. It's not that I think you have to agree with the left -
just don't agree with the idiots. I'm a little left of centre
personally but when talking about the USA and it's political
direction at the moment, it is more polarized than it has ever
been before in history. There's two sides and two sides only
these days - conservative/right and democrat/left. There's no
middle ground any more. So you have to pick a winner. Me, it's
the good of the common man and protection of the weak, poor
and innocent so I want the left in America to win. The other
side is about money. Power and money but mostly money. Money
in spite of the environment. Money in spite of effects on the
poor (cutting the budget for levy repairs in New Orleans for
instance), Money in spite of common sense (historical record
high deficit spending with no thought to how to pay it back).
It's probably not quite so black and white in the UK but it's
getting there. I noted that Blair was reviled for Iraq but re-
elected because people thought his competitors might not be
able to duplicate Blair's success with the UK economy. So
money rules over matters of conscience in the UK too.

Wow. Look at the time. I need to get home for dinner!

Not strictly true. Unfortunately neither of the opposition parties offered a
viable alternative. The Lib Dems were too wooley and hadn't a chance of
winning. The Conservatives have lost the plot completely. I think it was a
case of better the devil you know. Had there been a viable alternative Blair
would have been out because of the anti war feeling.

I really don't see how your description of what happened is any
different from mine. Let's face it, we (western democracies)
never have the luxury of choosing amoung several good options.
It's always the lesser evil these days. Somehow the Iraq evil
didn't make the Lib Dem evil nor the Conservative evil seem less
evil than new labour evil. I simply agree with the BBC analysis
I heard the day after the election - people thought the labour
government was the best bet to continue the strong economy.
Objections to Iraq policy were not strong enough in the end to
give up the comforts at home.

You are most probably right. Two subjects I refuse to argue about - religion
and politics. Both cause far too much dissention.

My dad always warned me about the 3 taboo subjects for pub arguments:
politics, religion and football. Following his advice, I discovered at quite
a young age how easy it was to start a fight in a pub if you could get a few
blokes discussing one of these subjects. Then I'd just quietly walk away and
leave them to it...
