Car Insurance for 17 year old ?
My son now has his provisional license and I have promised to buy him a
car - looking at either a Fiesta or Corsa for around 2500. I have got some
insurance quotes, which range from 2000 to 5000.
Can anyone recommend an insurance company who will give a reasonable quote -
one I know about but have not yet tried is Norwich Union Direct who also
offer a discount for Pass Plus, which he will do after passing his test.
TIA

Re: Car Insurance for 17 year old ?
You may be better approaching this for a different direction. You could ask
an insurance company what car will be the cheapest to insure. You can
reassure you son that this will only be until he builds up some no claims.

Re: Car Insurance for 17 year old ?
www.confused.com as a start.
I'm afraid its grunt work aswell. Use the net search as many insurance
brokers/companies you can. Confused is a good all rounder though but by no
means think you cant get cheaper. Although often its hard to beat.
You cannot generalise insurance much more than a group 1 car will be
cheapest and pass plus will reduce the cost. Other than that every insurer
assigns different risk and so you have to do the hard work and check as many
as possible.
Its hard at 17 and thats why i went on a parents policy. I must admit 2000
sounds high but i know nothing of your circumstances so maybe its around the
best.
I'm afraid the stats say a 17 year old lad is a risk. We all go through the
first years of hellish insurance. Something we just have to live with. It'll
drop qucik assuming he doesnt crash ;-)

Re: Car Insurance for 17 year old ?
I advise him getting the new model 2001 Corsa 1.0litre (its group 1
insurance), i have one and insurance is cheap for me (was 18 and now 19
coming 20). Just don't modify it in any way cause the peelers love spotting
corsas and doing them for little boy racers (but this is mainly the older
model).
Its a really nice car and insurance cost me 1500 under my dads name at 18
with 6months driving experiance with Norwich Union.

It cost me 1300ish on a 1.0 litre micra at 17 just after passing my test
and having pass plus
norwich union give 48% on 3rd party insurance with passplus
i wudnt advise doing it in your name and having your son as a second driver
as my mate has just had his insurance cancelled after they investigated
after an accident
either pay it or wait for him to pass and until then insure him on yours

Dunno if the offers are still around but many manafacturers used to
offer free insurance (up to 3 years) when you bought a new car with them.
That's why Citroen Saxo's were so popular with the young un's 2 or 3
years ago.
Might work out cheaper to go this route if the makers still offer the deals.

To do that you will need to post the following details to the group!
Your son's full name and address including post code, where the car will be
kept at the home address when not in use for example overnight. His date of
birth, date he passed his driving test, your phone number and his. Also the
registration number and value of the car, not what you paid - they are
different. You also need to give us his medical history!
Do you really want to post all that ? Without that and everyone in the
group phoning around for you or putting his details in every site going,
it's pointless asking here.
You're better off acting on the information you have already been given as
no two quotes are the same. Why have you not picked the cheapest one, it
will be around 1500 a year for him anyway. New drivers in Corsas are
classed as a high risk due to the way they try to race about with their
mates and act stupid.
Do what everyone else does and get a relative to put him on their policy.
Then pay them between a third and half of what his own policy would be.
Loads of people do that even though they would deny it, and who is to know
unless he signs a confession and posts it to the insurers?
The other way of getting cheaper insurance is to get the car insured in your
name if you can drive, or have him as a second driver. It's usally better
if a relative does it as it looks less suspicious. High insurance costs are
the reason people don't bother, the fine is a fraction of the cost of a
policy which is just stupid.

Investigators only know as much as people are willing to admit, so for them
to know - he or someone else directly involved must have told them.
What was the actual reason given for cancelling the insurance policy? I
don't mean what the story is to tell people either!
Insurance only gets cancelled for certain reasons.

Re: Car Insurance for 17 year old ?
Dont bother getting a car or insurance until he has passed his test and
taken pass plus .... this saved 600 on my 17 years olds insurance , he then
bought a renault clio 1200 cc for 525 .... the cost of his policy was 1200
for the year tpft ... but he will then earn ncb and hopefully reduce his
premium next time , as long as no claims... , We found Fiestas were more
expensive to insurer than either clios or a corsa , so shop around on cars
and engine size , some of the corsas didnt make a difference if it was a
1200 or 1400 ... the year can make a difference as well... so lots of time
on the phone , dont lie to insurers about whose car it is , they are not
stupid....
good luck

For free insurance you usually have to be 19. My daughter used Admiral (I
think). Insurance was about 800 for a Fiesta but that was only for ten
months BUT then she qualified for a years no claim discount which brought it
down to about 600 for the second year. Don't forget that the price is
based on where you live, living in a big city will usually cost more than in
a small town.
With Norwich Union Direct remember to ask for the extra two months ...they
advertise this but needed to be reminded when we took out our last policy.

be careful of the 10 month deals. Some companies wont accept the
"accelerated" no claims when you try to renew meaning your then stuck with
the same insurance company as gave you the 10 month deal or paying a high
amount for a new company. It can be a bit of a scam. Hit the news a while
back

I'd probably stay away from the mainstream stuff that every young driver
owns - they'll have high claim rates against them, so will cost more to
insure.
My first car was a Fiat Cinquecento Sporting - it was only a year old at
the time, but was cheaper to insure than my girlfriend's (now my
wife....) MkII Fiesta, even though the Cinquecento was a much nicer and
more expensive car _and_ I had zero years driving experience against her
4 years.
Although the Cinq. Sporting was designed to appeal to young drivers, a
significant proportion of them were sold to middle aged and older women,
keeping accident stats. down, and hence making them cheap to insure.

If you are caught doing this your insurance will be invalidated and possibly
any claim not paid out. Insurers are very wise to this form of avoiding
paying the full premium for young drivers. The insurance must be in the
name of the main driver. It is called a "material fact" that you must
declare on the proposal form (it will ask you who the main driver is). If
you lie, it is fraud and accident investigators (loss adjusters) will leave
no stone unturned to get the truth after all their main task is to minimise
the cost to insurers as much as possible. It is not very difficult to
establish who the main driver is but I'm not going into it as it will give
people ideas of how to get around it.
If you do get your insurance invalidated, you will also have problems
arranging cover with another insurer.
It is surprising that so many people think they are clever defrauding the
insurance companies but if they didn't do it then the premiums wouldn't be
so much anyway!

Car insurance is very expensive for young new drivers although I didn't
think that it got to 5000 for a 2.5K car. However, it depends heavily on
where you live to factor in the chances of an insurance claim.
You can do things like put your son on your own insurance as a second
driver. But then, do you want your insurance to suffer if he crashes?
Also, he may not be able to accrue no claims this way.
To reduce cost of insurace you really need to look various options:
1) Get a car that is as low powered as possible (e.g. 1.1 litre)
2) Third party, fire and theft insurance only.
3) High excess.
The above are actually very good for first time drivers. People have a
tendency to be more careful when they have to foot the bill if something
goes wrong. It will help keep your son safe on the road.
4) If your son goes to uni, consider making the uni address the main address
if it is a 'lower risk addresss'.

The Corsa B is a piece of shit while the corsa C (new model) is nice but
more of an old womans car, but i dont mind the street cred of it tbh...
check out corsa-c.co.uk tho - there you can see what they can look like tho
;)
Both 1litre versions of corsas are Group1, and if you go for the earliest
corsa new model 2001, the insurance is good cause their worth about 3000

You can look at cars by insurance group on Parkers. Ideally something 6 or
below.
You can also use this tool to get an idea...

That is absolute absurd for that car! I am 17, and have a 1.6 Suzuki X90
insured in my own name, fully comp for 2000.

I used www.liverpoolvictoria.co.uk, for learning in I had a Rover Mini 1.3
and this was 1300 fully comp, in my own name. Try them, excellent service

Re: Car Insurance for 17 year old ?
Hi
When my son was 17 and had a provisional licence he had an old Fiesta
1.1 and it cost 1267 Third Party, Fire and Theft with Norwich Union
(which I found to be cheapest). He is now 19 and has had a full
licence for two years and has a 2 year old 1.3 Fiesta has fully
Comprehensive Insurance still with Norwich Union, which cost 639.
I recently tried to get him insured on our Volvo S40 1.9TD with our
Insurers Halifax and they would not insure him at all.
