Recommended car insurance
I've finally got to 4 years no claims and wanted recommendations for car
insurance companies that would provide protected cover at a reasonable
price.
I'll try www.confused.com and www.theaa.com but are there any other ones I
should look at?
My renewal quote seems very reasonable - are there any companies that
guarantee to beat your renewal as I know some of them also give you more
than 100% of the difference?
Thanks

Re: Recommended car insurance
Hi. There's some very good advice about this here....
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1092813037,41960
Beware of the very cheapest quotes on places like confused.com, as I found
they mostly had fairly poor levels of cover and a few hidden costs.
eg. a 20 admin fee each time you want to change any detail on your policy.
I myself finally settled for www.priviledge.com who gave a balance between a
good quote, with decent cover.
However a place that's good for one person won't necessarily give you a good
quote!
I think if you look at the moneysavingexpert site above though, you'll get
some good info.
Hope that helps.

I Used to drive a Renault Laguna 2.2 TD Executive and Tesco.com covered me
for 80 less than everyone else I tried. In January some git ingored a
giveway at a crossroads and wrote it off. I was given a courtesy within 2
days (as it happened Saturday evening). And I got paid out within 3 weeks.
All the staff were extremely helpful on the telephone and the solicitors
kept in communication regarding the procedings.
All in all, I think I'll be renewing with them next year.
Hope this helps.

Nationwide insurance have a good deal at the moment - get a quote from them
........ and if you can get a chaeper quote they refund TWICE the difference.

Apart from the online insurers, you could try the yellow pages. A lot of the
direct insurers have freephone numbers. Premiums can vary according to area
so what is cheap for one person may not be cheap for someone else in a
different area so it pays to shop around.
I'm with AA insurance. Was unfortunate to have an accident last year where
I was forced off the road by an oncoming car that did a runner. Happened
late at night but they had a 24 hour helpline. They picked the car up,
supplied a courtesy car the next day and were very helpful. Didn't even
have to fill in a claim form. The icing on the cake was that they didn't
load the renewal premium even though the claim was for 5356.00 (and I have
protected NCD). I would recommend them from my experience of using them
even if they are not the cheapest.

That sounds like a good deal, where did you see that as there's no mention
of it on their website?

So instead of renewing get yourself another introductory discount from
another company, or tell the current one that you'll go elsewhere unless
they give you a "loyalty discount" and see what they do :-)

Its just a Mondeo 1.8 S reg, so nothing fancy.
Actually my renewal is the best price so far, which is quite unusual.

It depends on terms and conditions which seem to be variable!
A lot of companies advertise under different names, animal names are
popular.
One company I am with is advertising via a different name and stating covr
is cheaper. so I am going from 320 a year fully comprehensive to 265. I
have had no points or claims since 1991.
There are ways to save money. Shopping around is important and i think
you're doing that already. If you can, pay in full to avoid taking a credit
agreement and charges.
Also try some online sites such as direct line or tesco, get a feel for what
the price should be and ask why if you are given a high quote. Some
companies will try to sell you breakdown cover, car warranties, and whatever
else they can get away with until you keep saying "NO".
Stick to insurance only! If you want optional extras such as breakdown
cover you can't beat the ones from Tesco and as for warranties - keep your
car regularly serviced instead.
Best of luck, you will be amazed at how some companies will try to rip you
off, brokers are worse.

Just done a round of quotes are MoreThan came up with the cheapest figure,
and this includes the protected bonus scheme (Maximum No Claims Bonus For
Life) so will probably stick with them.
Just 2 things:
1) what is their breakdown cover like and is it an internal one or is it
backed by the AA or RAC?
2) is it worth getting legal cover for an extra 17.85 as it only covers
uninsured losses where there is a chance of recovery. What do you guys
reckon?
Thanks again

I HAD 4 years but forgot to protect it on changing insurers and
elephant.co.uk neglected to remind me - bar-stewards! I'm with
privilege.com now after one attempted theft claim and one (Ahem)
endorsement. Grrrr...
The insurance companies must be making money hand over fist with the amount
of drivers that have 3 points thanks to proliferation of speed cameras etc.
I'd be interested to know what percentage of drivers now have 3 points
compared to 10 years ago.

Interesting. (Thanks to London+Attempted Theft + SP30) privilege have quoted
me about 150 less than Nationwide. I'm sceptical that Nationwide would
take 300GBP off their quote. Hmmm.

If it only covers uninsured losses I personally wouldn't bother. There's a
scheme already in place (something like the uninsured losses bureau) that
deals with problems where you have to claim off someone who wasn't insured
and IIRC it's free.
If it's complete legal cover I'd take it, but it sounds like it's not worth
having. This is only my opinion, I may be wrong! ;)
