Route/price query Horsham - Battle
I travelled from Horsham to Battle last year on a saver return and went
via Ford and St Leonards Warrior Square (a route I think was suggested
by qjump or the trainline). When I was on the train I realised I could
also have gone "clockwise" via Gatwick and Tonbridge/Ashford. I asked
A gripper on board if this was a valid route for my ticket and he
assured me it would be.
In the event I travelled back via the coastal route as I had plenty of
time and wished to have a paddle in the sea. Also one can never be too
sure that you won't meet a gripper with a different opinion.
I went on line yesterday to check what effect the other route would
have in terms of cost and or journey time, but was unable to get either
qjump or the trainline to give me anything other than the route via
Gatwick.
Does anyone know if one route is more expensive than the other, and
also approx how much time might be saved by going via Gatwick?

Routeing Points for Battle are Hastings Group and Tonbridge, and Horsham is
a Routeing Point.
You need to check the Horsham - Battle fares against Horsham - Hastings and
Horsham - Tonbridge - you can't use a Routeing Point if the fare to the
Routeing Point is greater than the fare for the overall journey.
Assuming that the fares rule doesn't exclude one of the Routeing Points, you
can go via Hastings using either Ford or Three Bridges to get to the South
Coast. Via Tonbridge you can go via Gatwick and Redhill, or Dorking
(changing from Dorking to Dorking Deepdene) and Redhill, or via London
(though check, there might be separate via London and not via London fares).
Unless I've missed something, you can't go via Ashford - having got to
Tonbridge or Hastings you then have to go direct to Battle.
AIUI you can go via Hastings, even though this means doubling back through
St Leonards Warrior Square, because St Leonards is in the Hastings Group.

Similarly you could do it with just one change of train at Tonbridge.

Wierd, I am pretty sure Ashford Intl was mentioned by either Qjump or
The Trainline. Of course I can't get them to come up with it now, and
looking on the map, I can't see why they would have.
Oh well.
