They are not quiet - but none of the portable ones are going to be.

There not. Bought one from B+Q at work a year ago and it makes a real drafty
noise. Not that efficient either at cooling the place. Work best in a non
sunny room.

It's like sleeping on a plane. You get used to the din.
But yeah they are very noisy.
Best thing i find is to run the aircon just before going to bed to make the
room nicely chilled then
turn it off and put a normal fan on until you fall asleep.

I'd assume you use a timer on the socket.

Even the 90 B&Q ones have a 12 hour timer. Better ones have 24 hour
timers.

The sticker on the side of the 8000btu one says power consumption is
950 watts. Dunno what that equates to in money.

Under 1kw in an hour seems very reasonable.

Thats about a massive 9p/Hour or whatever the going rate of 1kW/h elecy is
now. May well vary for many.
Certainly something for only hot days or a few hours on warm days. Or just
bugger the cost and use anyway :)

To veer somewhat from the thread, the B&Qs near me all have those
units at near maximum price, with the 800BTu unit sporting a large
"199" banner but a teeny sticker nearby does hint at 157 quid. On the
web site and posted here are many mentions of 98.51 and even 78/74.
When do the branches decide to offload and drop the price? One I tried
(Loudwater, HWycombe) has quite literally shedloads of aicon gear at
full price, it just aien't shifting.
In the spirit of his ng I'd like to snare one for next year when the
store decides the space is needed for Xmas trees & Easter eggs.

I assume the store manager decides based upon whether the space is
needed.
In ours the price label is written in felt tip pen so presumably was
decided locally.
If they get to 50 then I'll but the entire stock and stick on ebay
next year!
