HST 'Barrier Vehicle'
It's always interesting passing Laira depot on the eastbound side of
Plymouth, on the GWML. In the sidings in and amongst rolling stock and
engine sheds can be seen relatively obscure trains (and bits of trains)
- interesting to infrequent travellers such as myself, anyway.
I'm almost used to seeing class 43 power units unattached to coaches,
although they still look - odd! However today, I saw something rather
odd. It seemed to be a mk2/mk3 coach in the old blue-and-grey BR
livery, with the windows filled (silver, as if they were metal), and
flaky paint. Peeling white text read 'HST barrier vehicle'.
What on earth IS one of those?!?!

They were used to enable locos to haul or shunt HST coaching stock ie like
an adaptor between the different couplings. Similar are used between locos
such as class 60 and buckeye stock.
