Bl***y WW2 Hole !
I have been blackberry picking with Erica who found a very fruitful area on
the outskirts of Spanho aerodrome. Spanho was an American bomber base in
WW2. I had my wellies on and crashed through the briars with impunity until
I inadvertantly stamped on a hole! The hole, obviously an anti- personnel
device, was completely hidden by briars and brambles. I hung in mid air,
balancing on my arms, my legs dangling over this deep pit. The hole was
lined with steel at the sides and very slippery. I yelled for Erica, who
helped pull me out. I am scatched all over. I hope the blackberry pies, that
will punctuate the winter meals, will be well worth the pain. Erica is still
laughing. I'm OK but my dignity took a bruising.

Oh dear. (No, I'm not laughing - honest - my face is completely straight -
and my fingers are crossed.) Around here the worst dangers when picking
brambles are the thorns that scratch you to ribbons: I sometimes wonder why
all the other prickly, scratchy, itchy things seem to congregate where the
brambles grow. In the best bramble hedge hereabouts there are also fine
patches of nettles, thistles, holly and hawthorn to contend with. Oh yes,
and midges. But no holes. So far....
I suppose, given that Erica saved your life, the moral of the story is never
to go brambling alone.

Forget the pain. You are one very lucky man, Rex. In more ways
than one.
Imagine the local headlines if this story gets out to the

Allegedly, many are shapeshifters and can look like amost anything. It's
nice that you have followed my convention by spelling it faeries as opposed
to fairies, which conjures up pretty little girls with gossamer wings.

Surprising it be just how many people do actually believe in the wee
folk, as a visit to the Isle of Man or some parts of Ireland will attest.

It's good for business. Even Cornwall has its piskies. In my part of the
world, the fens, they were superstitous about the will o the wisps but
probably with good reason as marsh gas was common and those methane fuelled
lights must have been a mystery to them. Many of the more malevolent faeries
hark back to our celtic ancestors and their belief in a spirit in every
stream, tree or mound. Man always invents answers to the unknown. I suppose
aliens are our modern day faeries.

I think what you nearly fell into was the remains of a 'pop up' gun turret.
They could be raised and lowered to allow aircraft to take off.

You mean a 'Pickett-hamilton' fort? AFAIK they used concrete within
concrete, not a metal liner. I don't think they were employed on US
air-bases - just RAF, but not sure. Over 300 were installed before they
were deemed to be 'bloody useless' (one of the gunners had to run across
open grounds for ammo, and was vulnerable). Money saved on them was
diverted to other aerodrome defences.
