Yes, they take cards, iirc for purchases over 5.

A friend of mine wanted a computer from Aldi.  It was about 600.  She knew 
it was debit cards only but forgot that her bank account automatically 
transfers balances over 500 from her current account to a higher interest 
saving account.  Card declined - insufficient funds.  I told her that with 
its clientele Aldi checkout staff must see so many declined cards that they 
will not have laughed too much as she skulked off empty handed ;-)
