Law study in Edinbourgh
First of all, helo everyone!

I'm a law student here in Slovenia on the University of Ljubljana and was
thinking of going on either a Socrates/Erasmus exchange to Edinbourgh or
enroll there as a post-graduate (after I graduate, of course ;-)).
I'm particularry interested in Intellectual Property Law.

Therefor, I'd love to know how good the IP Law study on the Uni. of
Edinbourgh really is - I hear the uni. itself is pretty good.
And some info on student life, average expenses and so on would also be very
welcome. :]

Best regards and thanks for any replies,

You might do better asking on ed.general, I think; don't know how it
specifically stands on IP law, but I understand the law department at
Edinburgh is fairly well regarded.

The woman clearly speaks perfectly good English, so you're just being a
show-off prat. This is a Scottish newsgroup.

Re: Law study in Edinbourgh
Thanks for the compliment Biggles, but Matija is a guy's name and the last
time I checked I didn't turn into a "woman of the opposite sex" (to quote
Herr Flick from Alo Alo)

Don, thanks for the reply, but I said I'm from Slovenia, not Slovakia -
don't worry people often confuse these two :] And I think I understood what
you were saying.

How's the life for a student in Edinbourgh? I heard that Edinbourgh is
pretty expensive. :/ Are there any ways to make life cheaper as a student?
In Slovenia we have so called Student Food Vouchers. You can only buy and
use these vouchers upon presenting your valid students ID. You can then use
them in many different restaurants (well, you have to choose where first,
since the name of the restaurant is printed on the voucher and the prices
vary). The price of a voucher varies from cca. 0.4€ to 3€, depending on the
restaurant. For a voucher you usually get a quite decent lunch or at least
a very decent snack.
I guess you don't have anything similar in Scotland, since I didn't find a
similar system anywhere else yet (it's a good one though! :D). But are
there any pubs or mensas or something like that where you can eat for an
affordable price?

Best regards,

Lol :]

Naah, don't worry - I'm not one of those (sadly many) narrow-sighted pricks.
Actually the field I'm interested in most is figuring out where the law has
become unfair and to what it should be changed - yea, I know I'm pissing
agains a very high wind, but I'm still young ;)

Oh, and I'll probably just stayy in Edinbourgh for as long as it takes me to
go finish my post-graduate studies.

Yes, you obviously do have very good English skills if you watch and
understand Alo, Alo.

I am aware that Slovakia and Slovenia are not the same, but on one of my
field trips to Lubjana I was astonished at the similarity of the languages
and so I thought you would understand a Slavic encouragement from someone
now living in Scotland. Unfortunately during our visit my wife got into a
rather sereal conversation with our ancient landlady in Bled who couldn't
distinguish (by sound) between a Slovenka and a Slovinka. You know what I
mean! These little misunderstandings were a common feature of our stay. We
also had terrible problems buying iced coffee in the castle restaurant for
our son (who was 10 at the time). It seems that custom in Lubjana regards
coffee as not something that should be served up to children. I wonder if
this has changed over the last few years? But I remember our stay well and I
was interested to see a recent television programme here which drew
parallels between the Scottish poet Robert Burns and your France Preeren.
The backdrops of the city and castle were fantastic.

Returning to the point, I believe student life in Edinburgh is at least as
full and exciting as anywhere else in the UK, and with Edinburgh being a
great historical capital city and cultural diamond, there is much for you to
see. Edinburgh can be quite expensive but most of the universities have
student accommodation which I believe makes things a little cheaper
especially if you share a flat.

I believe fees for a one year postgrad course for an EU student would be
about L3,000 or so. But then I imagine your Erasmus scholarship would pay
the fees and provide you with an allowance? I know the chap at Napier
University who teaches intellectual property law. I believe he is also
versed in Erasmus matters. He is very friendly. Why don't you contact their
Law School and speak to him. You should be able to find his telephone and
email details somewhere on their website (http://www.napier.ac.uk). I am
sure he would be delighted to speak to you email to you.

There is unfortunately no student food voucher scheme in Scotland. But as
you suggest there are students unions (mensae) where you can get reasonable
food quite cheaply - not to mention the beer!

Best regards to you too,

Don

P.S. Incidentally, Biggles (if you're reading this), I decided to write in a
Slav language because there had been a number of unhelpful and xenophobic
comments (though probably only in jest) preceding my response. I consider
that that kind of response to a genuine and friendly enquiry is unacceptable
and anti-European. No doubt you agree. Our response to that surely is to
make the visitor feel welcome in whatever way we can. And as you know the
Scots have a long tradition of being very friendly to all our visitors and
of being very European - often when the English are not. Furthermore, in my
experience, the visiting of foreign scholars can only enhance the quality of
our own academic institutions and place Scotland more firmly upon the
international academic map - as I'm sure you would agree.

Re: Law study in Edinbourgh
Don,

thank you very much for the info about the Napier university. I'll try to
contact them. Although at the very first glance at their page, I didn't
find a law faculty - but I am a bit busy with the ELSA [European Law
Students' Association] group here in Ljubljana and the exams at the moment,
so I'll take a closer look at it later on. I guess you wouldn't happen to
know whether there is a ELSA group in Edinburgh, would you?
With the Erasmus, I just checked, and our facutly doesn't have an Erasmus
exchange organized with Napier or any other UK university/faculty. Well,
I'll dig into it after my exams. :]

Coffee and kids? Well, it's not forbidden to give it to small kids, but it's
not considered right. One has to note, that usually here (well, at least at
home) we brew coffee the turkish/serbian way (in the special pot) - which
is a lot stronger then an (italian-style "brewed" in the coffee-machine)
espresso. So in short: it's still similar - you'll probably get a few
surprised odd looks from a few of the people around you if you order coffee
for a 10-yearold, but nothing apart from that. Oh, but if you were in
Slovenia in the time it was a part of Yugoslavia, the coffee had some more
importaint meaning, so the outrage was probably a bit bigger. But then
again as a comparison: when I was - as a small kid - with my family in
Algir I was brought home by a policeman because "I was trying to buy acid
in a grocery store" - my mum sent me to buy a bottle of vinegar, and in
Algir you could not buy acid (and with that vinegar!) as an underage
person. :]
I think maybe the fact that the dialects of the slovene language are many
and very diverse could be an answer to why that old lady misunderstood you.
A comparison between Burns and Prešeren? Hmm, that could be quite
interesting...

Oh, and don't worry about the Slovakian mail from before - I did feel a bit
flatter acutally! It's quite rare for me that I get an answer at least
close to my mother language from a foreigner.

best regards,
