My Bro-in-law has a 1996 Citroen Synergie 2.0 LX (petrol) which he says 
is running very poor. Before I take a look I was wondering if it is 
possible to pull any stored fault codes on this model or does it need to 
be hooked up to specialist equipment.  I've had a look at Autodata CD 
and it gives the procedure to manually access any stored codes using the 
homemade flash LED method but looking around the net I see there are 2 
types of DLC on the Synergie, one with a 30 pin (which is the one 
described on Autodata) and also a 16 pin.  Anyone know if the 1996 
Synergie codes can be read using the LED method?

Why not find the DLC and count the number of pins?

I haven't yet come across a surefire way of telling what parts are 
fitted to any specific peugeot/citroen car.  My local motor factors 
assure me that they can tell me from the registration number and have on 
more than one occasion supplied me with the wrong part.

They just seem to use what was lying around the factory at the time. 
Usually on the peugeot/citroen cars I have experience of, I have to 
remove the part I want to replace and take it with me, or at least have 
a good look at it on the car before I buy a replacement.

If it has a green 2 pin SD connector in the engine compartment, the chances
are that you can.
If it has the 30 pin connector fitted in the passenger compartment, codes
can only be read with a dedicated FCR.

I had a 98 1.9TD SX . The ODB plug was under the dash on the right near the 
bonnet catch puller.
You might be better posting this query to the forums on www.andyspares.com

If you define what running poor is you might get some pointers from people 
here.
It is running lumpy , not idling fast enough , too fast , tapping , knocking 
etc etc

A dealer will want 50 for a code reading, so I'd cover all the basics first 
i.e. plugs, leads , coil resistance , breather pipes etc

Yes, I've now had a look and it has a 30 pin plug under the dash.  Tried 
the LED method connecting to pins C2 & C3 but the light remained 
permanently lit.  I was looking in Halfords and their Citroen/Peugeot 
Draper code readers don't mention the Synergie or 806 so looks like it 
needs the proper gizmo tool.  Incidently,  them Drapers are a complete 
rip off.  I had a look inside the box thinking that they at least 
contained the correct fitting plug but they're nothing more than the 
homemade version.

Does anyone know if the Synergie check engine (MIL) light should come on 
when you switch on the ignition because I noticed that this does not 
come on, or does it only illuminate when it registers a fault?

It idles at about the right RPM but sounds lumpy and if you very lightly 
open the throtle the revs will drop before picking up, or sometimes when 
you release the throttle the revs will drop to almost stall before 
levelling out again and sometimes will stall.  Seems fine and runs ok on 
an open road but in traffic there is an occasional engine splutter and 
misfire and the Temp gauge goes high. He's had a new thermostat and temp 
sensor fitted but made no difference to the gauge reading.  I'm sure 
there were other things he mentioned but I can't remember now.

Maybe you missed my earlier post. Unless it has the green 2 pin SD connector
under the bonnet, you need a dedicated FCR to extract codes.
You can't read flash codes from the 30 pin socket using a simple LED setup.
All you can do without an FCR is to clear all the codes, by disconnecting
the battery for a couple of minutes. However it is an adaptive system,
(learning capability) so any previously set values will be reset to the
default setting. Also of course the radio memory and code will have to be
reentered.

The light should come on when the ignition is switched on. It should go off
as soon as the engine starts, unless there is a fault.
Should also come on if a fault develops while you're driving.

Thanks for that.  I did notice a 6 pin connector near to the battery 
(not sure what colour) but didn't see any 2 pin, but there may well have 
been which I didn't notice.

That's what I thought.  Any bets on there being a bulb in place if I 
remove the instrument panel!

You won't find one on your car.
They have either a green 2 pin SD connector under the bonnet, *or* a 30 pin
one under the dash. You've found a 30 pin one. Hence no 2 pin SD connector
under the bonnet. Dunno what the 6 pin one is for.
