Car Insurance...
What sort of prices am I looking at for getting first time car insurance? My
first provisional will be arriving shortly, and the car is a 1998 1.1l 3
door 106. I am 26 and male, but the prices from sites I'm checking are
between 800 and 1000. Surely I won't have to pay that much? I know I'm
only starting out, but still. Expected it to be about 500-600.

I don't know if this is any use but when my wife re-started learning to
drive (again) we found that if she was a named driver on my car and took out
a policy on her own car with Tesco, then they credited her with the same NCB
as me. After that year she had full no claims in her own right and I took
her off my policy. It might work out cheaper to get named on someone else's
policy and buy your own and then you start saving big time next year.

Sounds about right since you're a high risk and have no NCB.

Marcus you have answered your own question. If you have tried the usual
suspects on line like tesco, esure, insure, elephant etc then expect to pay
what they quote.
My mate had a swift, (I think it was the lowest group you could get) he was
aged 34 and the cheapest he got his insurance for was 1100. Didn't help
that he stayed in a dodgy area in Glasgow.
Try messing about with the different options. If you are prepared to pay a
high excess, this may bring it down.
I never put my wife on one of my quotes as a driver as she has her own car
so would be covered to drive mine with her own insurance. I then thought I'd
put her on to see the difference in price. It reduced the premium by over
100. Crazy I know but maybe worth a try adding a partner. You never know.
Steven.

Sounds normal to me!
Is this quoted for a provisional licence?
If so, you will probably have to pay more after you pass (As you won't have
another person in the car instructing you then!)

5 years no claims is worth 60%. You have none, coupled with the high risk
of accident for new drivers ...

Sounds about right to be honest. I passed my test in April of this year,
bought a 2000 Renault Clio 1.4 and my insurance is 700 TPFT.
Try http://www.quinn-direct.com/
I went through confused.com as well as all the usual recommened ones for new
drivers but Quinn were a good couple of hundred pounds cheaper. I'm the
same age as yourself.

Just a note to say to be careful with this type of thing. If you read
the policy, it usually says that the named driver should do most of the
driving. YMMMV of course (pun intended ;) There are many thing you can
do like this (like saying your car stays at your parents lower risk
address), but technically this is insurance fraud.

Under most policies, she'd only be covered for third party and only in case
of an emergency - check your policy.

Adding a partner with a good driving record often does bring the premium
down.

My 20 years-old daughter found that
http://www.privilege.co.uk/motor/index.htm were a hell of a lot cheaper than
the 'usual suspects' mentioned above (about 500 for fully comp with no NCD
for a 1.6 litre Ford Fiesta) but she has a full licence and we live in a
rural area in Kent. After being insured for 9 months they have just offered
to reinsure her for another 9 months less one year's NCD, after which they
will offer her two year's NCD subject to being claim-free. All being well
she will have 2 years NCD after 18 months. They are also offering interest
free instalments until September 14th. Worth a try, good luck!

My first insurer last year was Prestige: 0208 9393960. They were about
150 cheaper than any company I could find on the internet. Also if you
have the Pass Plus when you join at the end of the year they will
certify you as having 2 years no claims bonus.

I got my first time car insurance in April.
25, Male, Focus 1.6, Fully Comp., Legal services and Courtesy car.
And it was 446 from Norwich Union.
And that wasn't the cheapest.

Re: Car Insurance...
Last year I was in the same boat as you. My insurance was in the £800
- £1000 price range. In fact couple (Esp ones that are so call
specialise young drivers) were over £1000. The car I was driving was
Daewoo Nubria 1.6. (do not buy.) Anyway got insured by Nationwide for
just over £800. This year I change my car to a Ford Fiesta and the
cheapest company this time was Norwich Union Direct on the website. I
also added my wife which reduce the premium by about £150. With NUD,
choose fully comp (assuming you want third party) but increase the
excess to £1000. It give a bigger discount than just Third Party.
But POL was not that much more expensive but did not go with POL cause
to get the lower price at the time I had to lose my home insurance
staff discount I had :-(.
So give those two companies a call. And if you call POL, (disclaimer I
own a postoffice so if you do take out a policy I will get paid a small
fee.) quote promotional code HBRA 01 Response Code 161 6420 on 0800
169 6500 and they will give you £25 off the premium. The same code
and number for home insurance (same offer.) But like other ppl said,
Car insurance is a fishing game, you have to fish for the cheapest
insurance each year. Something you will find next year whoever you go
with, the "renewal quote might not be the cheapest possible from your
current insurance, sometimes it is cheaper to "reapply" as a new
customer than take the renewal quote. also check

Nationwide just quoted me 513.46.

Insurance rates have gone up a lot recently. Obviously, individual
circumstances will dictate who works out cheapest for you, but
elephant.co.uk have managed to keep me as a customer for three years
running, simply by being the cheapest (by far) for me.

It'd probably pay you to garage the 106 for a year.
Buy a group 1 150 banger, insure it third party and drive it for the
year. Assuming you don't crash you'll have a years NCB and you'll find
next years premium on the 106 will have come down.
Group 1 cars which I think include things like the Fiat Panda,
Vauxhall Corsa and the 2CV. The older the car, the cheaper the
insurance.
