Does a Volvo V70 Tdi reequire specialist servicing?
Does the late 90's volvo v70 Tdi (UK) require specialist servicing (ie
Volvo main dealer)or can a decent independent do it? Do independents
have the equipment/skills to plug into the engine for diagnostics?
Independent volvo specialists seem much rarer for some reason compared
to other makes. Having to use volvo main dealers for 5 yr+ car will be
expensive as they charge a very high labour rate.
How do independent/back street garages cope working on all these
different makes of cars with all the different chips and computers
inside modern cars these days?

Some will know the Volvo well, others will not. The safest bet is to find another volvo
owner who can recommend an independent repair shop. Other than that, perhaps one that
specializes in foreign cars will do.

They either buy a unit to do it themselves, or contract it back to the main
dealer.

When you need to change cambelts, diesel pump adjustment, injector service,
water pump change, exchaust and turbo and electronics you can use Bosch
Diesel
Centres as most of the fuel system and the related electronics is from
Bosch - so they
know what they are doing.
Drivetrain repairs and body stuff can be made from the garage that your
friends
also use, this require no special knowledge.

There are several specialists in the north west, such as 'Jump leads'
independant volvo specialists.
These guys are great and cheap :)
HAve a look around your area, if in doubt go and ask at the main dealer,
tell them your wife has an old 240 or something and do they know of any
good independants in your area.
