Are there any online car insurance companies which allow you to print
out the insurance certificate or a cover note as soon as you have set
it up online? I want to do this so I can get car tax right away. Is a
cover note ok for getting road tax?

Aaargh! I went through this last week. Confused.com gave me 2 good quotes 
(for a change) for my new toy Mondeo: its4me.co.uk and Swintons.

its4me.co.uk are fully online so I tried them. First try I made a booboo 
*but* then it wouldn't let me print the cover note anyway - NP says they, 
we'll post it. I needed it that day, hence going with them... They cancelled 
that policy so I could do it again. Lots of re-entering data later, same 
problem  - couldn't print it. They can't email me the PDF I should have 
printed  - 'policy', 'data protection act', etc.

So I cancelled that one too and phoned Swintons in town. Got an extra 5 off 
the web price, and picked up the cover note on the way past to pick up the 
car 10 minutes later.

So I spent about an hour trying to get it done online and 10 minutes tops 
getting it by phone!

Just waiting to see if its4me take the money or not *twice* now....

I've also noticed that most insurers offer cheaper quotes if you add the
Mrs / partner as a named driver on the policy.

100 more expensive than it was last year, and it's gone down this year 
too!!!!!

Yeah, just don't tell them you are a PROFESSIONAL driver!!. I Drive around
150,000 km a year in my truck, accident and conviction free and just for a
laugh, i tried a few insurance co's stating different professions. Guess who
pays the most! yes you've guessed it, the HGV driver. This system sucks and
as I can only drive for so many hours per week BY LAW, (unlike the ford
sierra reps who drive 300k a year 12-15 hours a day with no increase in
premiums) I feel utterly ripped off!

i used to do around the 80,000m per year mark
but now i'm in the office, my years of driving have ocme in usefull as i've 
got 5 years ncd from my company (and i'm insured by them too :) )

yes, but you see some won't insure you if you are a certai age, you need to 
be able to drive to keep your job, any sort of accident will put you in the 
shit if it's going to be problomatic, no mater who you are insured by or who 
pays the premium, you get the shit for it if youhit someone at the end of 
the day
my mate was lumbered with a 7k bill for an accident that wasn't even his 
fault so it's not all that great
i've got a driver going to court on friday for an accident which the police 
said was his fault
and they are doing him for speeding in a seperate case (though i'm not too 
sure how that is going to work) but he's going to lose his job when they 
find out he was doped to the eyeballs on the green stuff
