OT: Con or not?
Hiya,
Just wondering what you're opinions are on this:
http://www.art4allhome.com/
They've been knocking around our area and i think, like most, i'm inclined
to instantly assume its a con because somebody dodgy is knocking on my door.
However, having put some thought into it, i cant see where the con is?
Basically they bring you a bunch of oil paintings on canvas and try to sell
you them. The paintings are apparently under 100quid and from what i've
seen pretty decent. Now i dont think these are masters or anything, or even
one off's, i'm sure they're churned out by somebody painting by numbers in a
factory somewhere, but under 100quid for a big old oil painting doesnt sound
bad?
Anybody come accross these people before?

painted in a 3rd world production line somewhere. Somebody paints a

so on.
To be fair, they weren't silly money for what they were though. If you find
something that looks good in your home then there are plenty of worse ways
to waste money.

Yep , don't value them any higher than a similar sized poster that you like
the look of and you won't be unhappy , but don't expect a work of art or for
it to have any real resale value

So long as you realise they have no investment value then it is not a "con".
If you like the paintings and think they are worth the price then go ahead.
A decent print with a limited run can cost 100.

Sounds like a good deal to me then... i'm certainly not somebody who would
even begin to think they would have a clue where to begin investing in art,
but i think an oil painting would look nicer than a poster :) What i didnt
want was to go and find the guy, pay my money and end up with something that
all the paint fell off, or it exploded, or another "me" appearing... etc.

Real oil paintings by local , unknown but quite talented aritists seem to go
for any sort of price from 50 up for a titchy canvas up to several hundreds
for big ones.

At a general auction house you can pick up decent paintings for aroud 100.
If you buy similar from an artist or gallery expect to pay 300-500

Re: Con or not?

Agreed - we have quite a few limited edition prints (mainly of wildlife
by Dick Van Heerde), and some we bought pre-framed for (several hundred)
We bought a couple more prints and got them framed professionally to the
same standard, bringing the cost to £200-£250 each.
At the end of the day, buy it because you like it, not because it might
be worth something in a few years - it almost certainly won`t.
Our gaff needs decorating badly (i`m registered disabled and can`t cope
with standing up long enough to be able to do it) but a few good prints
- particularly if they`re framed well - can still make people go "wow"
when they walk in the room.

The oil masters of the Dick Van Heerde prints I mentioned earlier go for
£14,000

As little as 99p on ebay.
Try searching on 'oil painting' or 'original oil painting'
Another idea is to comission a local artist - we did that as a gift for a
guy leaving work, he did a wonderful large picture of the Jack and Jill
windmills using watercolours for about 100.

Looking at ebay 24x36 go for about 60quid with postage, so i guess around
that would be a fair price :)
thanks all

Re: Con or not?
Isn't this the sort of thing the Moonies do?
Nothing wrong with the idea. (Mass produced DVDs and CDs cost about 100
times what they cost to produce once they reach the retailers. Most
decent citizens seem to side with the maffia who control the industry
rather than the pirates who want to take their cut or make their own
copy.)
They might be screen printed with factories set up to segment up the
canvas as described above. But isn't that a work of art?
If not, what is the value of that Rolph Harris project in Edinburgh
really worth?

Not these specific people.....but I tried to identify a Parisien scene a
few months ago for the father-in-law. The artist's name in the corner
was a very English sounding name, like Constable or something...;-)
Ended up tracing it to a painting factory in China, where they sold
literally hundreds of these things, all very similar. Painting by
numbers, along with tracing.
Basic idea, they have a stock bank of buildings, trees, views of the
Eiffel Tower, River Seine etc....all they do is swap them around and
construct a new picture each time, many of the "views" actually didn't
exist.
I found a message board where people had picked these things up for
50pence at car boot sales, but some more unfortunate souls (mostly
Americans) had paid $1000 and thought they were getting a masterpiece.
Fascinating stuff.

The value has very little to do with whether it's a oil painting, or
whether it's a print, a drawing, a watercolour, or whatever. The value
is a function of its artistic merit and the market value thereof. And
there aren't short cuts to a knowledge of that.
Something to brighten up your walls is fine: pay what you think it's
worth to brighten up your walls. (Maybe the same order of cost as a few
halogen lamps and some yellow paint.) But art bought for its intrinsic
value? No, no, no -- leave it to those who've spent half a lifetime
learning it. (Not me.)
