Never heard of Crown, don't they make paint? ;o) Can't find any reviews
either.

I reckon you'd be better spending 200 more and getting something like this:
http://www.dabs.com/uk/productview.htm?quicklinx=3R5Z. HD Ready, and a
review here: http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=1253.

The Crown brand has been around since the forties but I think various
people use it under licence these days.

I don't think Crown is owned by Alba. A list of brands made by Alba can be
found on their website, including Bush and Goodmans

If you can wait (next year) the industry will be dumping cold cathode backlighting
in favour of the new hi-bright RGB LED back light. Have a google and you'll see

Who the heck wants something that huge in their living room???
It seems strange that given that most modern estate housing has tiny room,
people want to buy massive TV sets and humungous 3 piece suites. It looks
really odd.

we saw it in a woolies branch, and the picture quality wasn;t that
good.

Lots of fuzzyness and dot crawl depite it coming from a DVD player,
mind you it was a crown or bush dvd player so that might be the root
of the problems too..

LCDs are like plasmas..
they only give the best picture if it is at the panels native resolution.

HDTV will be either 1280x720 or 1920x1080 so anything that doesn't have that
resolution will not give the best picture.

So its best to realise that there are no (not that I have seen) plasmas that
will give the highest resolution and most LCDs and plasmas are XXXXx768
(1366x768 being popular as its 16:9).
There are a few plasmas that will do the lowest resolution and quite a few
LCDs.

None of the LCDs will look as good as a good plasma when being feed from a
TV signal.

(This is not the case using DVI from a PC with freeview BTW.)

So AFAICT if its TV you want (that includes most DVD players).. buy a TV or
a cheap plasma.

If its HDTV you are after then forget plasmas (even most of the expensive
ones that are "hdtv ready") and buy an LCD (or projector) with either
1920x1080 or 1280x720.

So what you're saying is that LCD is not as good as plasma, except when it
comes to HDTV whereupon LCD is superior? I've used a number of plasma
screens (not cheapo ones either, we're talking Pioneer etc) and picture
quality on those is good, but it is nothing compared to an LCD - these also
have the added benefit of not aging, unlike plasma panels, although CCFL
backlights do eventually fizzle out. That's a point, are CCFL backlights
replaceable on these new LCD TVs or are they integral to the panel? That
could be a bit of a bugger in 5 years time when they die....

Sony used at one time to be a very good Brand, but nowadays they are just
overpriced rubbish.

Yes.
HDTV is a digital technology unlike normal TV (freeview is a compromise).
It is specifically designed to display at 1280x720 or 1920x1080.
If your panel uses any other resolution then interpolation will occur, this
is bad.

(Makes you wonder why so many of the panels are XXXXx768 these days?..
Good for computers bad for HDTV))

IME plasmas generally display PAL TV better than LCD does (having said that
I like my LCD panel (1280x720)).
They will not display HDTV better than LCD will.

All parts are exchangeable if you can afford it.

Yeah, but when you consider the horrible MPEG2 artifacting you get on most
of the Sky channels, then a little interpolation particularly on a hi-res
screen will barely be noticeable by comparison!

Have to disagree there - I've seen a few LCDs on demo and side-by-side with
plasmas the LCD wipes the floor with them, even displaying a standard Sky
signal. Admittedly it's an RGB signal being fed in, so there is a minimum of
analogue interference, but the plasmas always tend to look a tad smeary by
comparison.

Yeah, but will you need to exchange the entire array or just the backlight?
Backlights are cheap enough, but an entire 32" panel would be like changing
the tube in a conventional CRT - expensive enough to scrap the set.

What a dumb response!
I'm happy with my plasma that's 10" bigger.
You stick with your 14" portable if you're happy!
