Second homes in Cumbria
Did you see the news on Saturday? It seems the chancellor is planning some
40% rebate on stamp duty for second homes. (I may have got this bit about
stamp duty wrong, as the report wasn't at all clear what the 40% referred to
but the chancellor has little say on anything else to do with house
charges!)
A local from Grasmere explained how small two bedroomed terraced houses now
cost over 2k because of the demand for second homes. Someone from an
official Cumbrian agency explained that any % 2nd home occupancy above 20%
was detrimental to the area i.e schools closing and other out of season
facilities going. He also stated that Grasmere has 48% of second homes! I
had no idea things were so bad in parts of Cumbria. No wonder the house
prices are through the roof in the nice areas. It's as bad as Cornwall.
Maybe they should limit second home buyers to places like Egremont. The
Chanel Isles do seem to have a better system.
Rex.

I think the idea is that people buying property to let could class the
property as part of their pension fund, and get tax relief on the purchase
price.

I notice houses for sale in The Lake Distric keep popping up on the holiday
cottage lists.

Thanks for that reference, John. It makes more sense now. I still think it
will have a big impact on the housing market in Cumbria, to the detriment of
locals trying to buy. Many of these villages will become ghost villages in
the winter.

Obviously the estate agents are on the ball, Edith. Nice to see you are
back on the newsgroup again. We have been trying to fill your shoes by
sending more posts but have failed woefully. Hope you are now well.
Regards
Rex.

Hello Rex. Thank you. I'm much better. These new pills are doing wonders.
They are called Brexidol. The pains disappeared and I thought I was ok and I
carried my groceries home from town and had to use Brexidol for another week
so I won't be on the net as much as before because I have to rest the
shoulder but I'm ok getting.
Edith.

Brexidol is known for its gastric irritation, especially in the ELDERLY! So
watch out for upset stomachs, Edith.

No problem here as yet, Rex. It's only for another week and never on an
empty stomach but if you know of a better remedy I'm all ears.
Edith.
