Upgrading a Dell
My son is thinking of buying a Dimension 3000 for 299.00. (Bank holiday
weekend only price)

This only has a cd reader. They want 111.64 to replace it with a dual layer
dvd writer.
If I buy one and fit it myself do I void the Dell warranty?

Why don't you ask Dell, because if someone in this newsgroup say's yo won't void the warranty by fitting one yourself
and then later it turns out that you do, then you are stuffed. However, saying this, I do not believe that the
warrantee will be made void by such actions, but don't hold me to it.

Dell's warranty is unaffected by your replacement of the drive.

Re: Upgrading a Dell
I bought a dell recently.
The case opens easily. There are no seals.
How would they know?

alternatively, you could buy an external enclosure and use a DVD writer over
USB. That would still be cheaper than Dell's ridiculous price.

Be aware the dell 3000 has no agp slot, and runs like a dog on 256mb of
memory, you can get the 256mb extra for about 15 from ebuyer.com a good
place to get the dvd writer as well....
The dell 3000s do not have seals on the case, and have a case that opens
with thumb screws. As long as you keep your original drive, and replace it
if you return, i shouldnt see them having a problem.

Runs like a dog on 512mb too. I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled
Windows, its only needs to install one small Dell drivers CD (and you
wouldn't need to install that program if you knew the correct driver names
for your model) program then install all the sound and video drivers etc.
Much better and free of bloatware and trialware like AOL!

If a company were disreputable, they could try and hide behing something
like that. I doubt Dell would.

However for a company to avoid paying on the warranty, they would have to
prove that any failure was as of a direct result of any modifications that
you did.

Another vote for "no".

Changing optical drives is a normal user-servicable procedure and is dead
easy on a D3000.
Unless you are ham fisted and break something while doing it your warranty
is unaffected

And norton and pinnacle etc, it was terrible all the shit they put on it!!!
But, when you clean it up it runs well, and an excellent price.

Re: Upgrading a Dell
My dell 3000 is very slow, although I do only have 256mb ram. WIll I
get a speed improvement if I add the extra 256mb but dont reinstall
windows.

Alternatively, will I get speed improvements if I reinstall windows but
dont upgrade the ram? Did you just reinstall windows from the Dell CD
supplied with the machine?

Cheers,

Dave.

Extra ram will improve it's performance.

Yes, if you have installed and uninstalled lots of programs/software.

By the way, when did this newsgroup change to the Dell support newsgroup?

Yes. You dont need to reinstall windows, just get the junk off. Remove
norton internet security, after you have fully uninstalled it, go to start
menu, run, type msconfig and go to startup, the chances are you have all
kinds of programmes starting themselves up, when you dont need them, go
through each one, one by one, check with this site for each:
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html

That will speed your PC up a bit...

It is really really easy to upgrade your memory. In terms of difficulty, if
changing the batteries on a remote control was 1 out of 10, and changing a
plug was 5 out of 10, adding memory would be 3 out of 10.

This memory will work perfectly:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=10230812239&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=49292

if the link doesnt work, it is quick code 49292 it even has free
shipping............... It will be the best 17 you ever spent.

When you reinstall windows, you get it without all the crap, but if you just
go to add/remove you should be able to get rid of it
