Southampton to Cambridge fares question
Possibly (not definite) travelling to Cambridge on Tuesday 6th
September, need to get there by 10.30am. Is there any way - e.g. an
advance ticket, or using the Clapham to Watford link then somehow
cutting across the northern Home Counties - I can do this without
having to give the rail companies a disproportionately large amount of
money for the privilege of going through London in the rush hour, as I
did when travelling to Canterbury earlier this year?
If not, how much cheaper would it be to travel the previous night?
Ironic if it was cheaper to go up the previous night and pay for a
B+B....
Thanks,
Nick

I've assumed you are travelling back the same day. Can't see that you can
make worthwhile savings by splitting tickets, or going via a roundabout
route. Fares seem to be
SOR GBP60.80 (GBP40.15 with Railcard)
SVR GBP52.30 (GBP34.50 with Railcard)
The SVR is not valid travelling from Southampton for a 1030 arrival in
Cambridge, but would be valid if you travelled the night before).
However, if you have a Network Railcard this cannot be used before 10 am -
so if this is your Railcard it might be worth considering travelling the
night before.
Even the (undiscounted) SOR seems reasonable value at around 22p per mile.

I can travel from Nottingham to London the night before, and stay in a
hotel overnight, for less than MML want to charge to transport me in the
morning peak.

Re: Southampton to Cambridge fares question
Thanks - can you get an advance ticket to knock it down though?
Does seem expensive compared to say Crewe which is only a little more -
GBP60-something - but further away (must compare distances with GPS
when I get home....)
A related question: if one travelled Crewe-Watford-Clapham-Southampton,
would that be via London or not via London?

Not having looked at the timetable, if the London - Cambridge service
leaves after 9:30am, might it be cheaper to get an SOR (or SDR?)
Southampton to London Terminals, then a CDR from London to Cambridge?
I have, in the distant past when it was BR, done similar when
travelling cross-London in the peak.

I have done something similar in the opposite direction, was trying to
get to Southampton by 11am. It was cheapest to buy a Rayleigh to London
SOR and then a London to Southampton CDR.
N.B. it was cheaper to leave Rayligh at the same time and get a
Rayleigh to Bath Saver Return!

According to trainline a saver to March is valid on the 0714 from
Southampton Central.
It routes you on a train that calls at Cambridge at 10.30 and costs 50.90

You will just have to hope that there are no ticket inspectors on duty
at Cambridge when you arrive!

If there a saving by buying a singles
The return half could be a NSE discounted single (over 10) assuming
your card is a Networkcard.
Networkcards are not valid before 10am so you are unlikely to get much
value out of it if you have to arrive by 10.30am
Travelling the previous night and a B&B could well be the best option
