I thought +R was more recent than -R. Although +R is not as compatible as -R
with older players the +R is regarded as being more reliable in the long
term. I found this out doing a google search on the subject.

Not seen the Tevion one before. Although it only writes to +R/RW it does
support DIVX. The LITEON above does not support DIVX.

Does it really matter if you are recording them for your own use? Chances
are the 160Gb HD will be used more than the DVD recorder anyway?

The fat sweaty bloke masquerading under the name "Jenny" has not heard
of LiteOn, and as such does not class it as a 'brand'.

No thanks, if the drive mechanism is anything like the LiteOn PC one I'll
stay well clear.

I'd be interested to know who makes the optical drive used in the Tevion
though.

Unfortunately, you are wrong. +R took over and is still in the lead. I
deal with many organisations that supply items on DVD and show them only on
DVD+R. -R is the older type of DVD although perfectly usable. It's DVDRAM
you need to avoid as it's not used much.
You need to look around, speak to IT people, local Government offices,
police, CPS, council CCTV - all of which use DVD+R. have a read through the
many technical papers about.

I know the technology, I know that dvd +rw has advantages in the way it can
be manipulated. But, that doesnt stop DVD+ been a dead format.

It is insanity to go and buy a recorder that only burns +.

Do you work for Panasonic by any chance?

There's nothing wrong with DVD+ and it's not "dead". Just open your eyes to
it.

It is as dead as a parrot, that is completely dead. It would have its
advantages in a dual format machine, a single format machine is generally
not a good idea, a single format dvd+ machine is absurd.

Both formats do what they say they do, besides aren't they both terminally
ill? Shouldn't we all be getting on the Blue Ray Vs. HD bandwagon now?

And you're a halfwit +R is superior to -R in many respects, most notable of
which is bad sector management.

It doesnt matter which is superior, +r is dead. If you want a writable dvd,
which is compatible with 99.99% of all home dvd players, then there is only
one option.

And that is what exactly? I've not found a player recently that can't play
+r, -r is an even older standard so if anything is dead it's that. I suppose
from the compatibility point of view DVD-RAM is dead, despite that's the
only format that can do timeslip recording? Then there's the quicker
recording of +R (try finding 16x -r media), but as it's a dead media I guess
I must have imagined that.

Personally speaking I prefer +r discs but having said that I've had a couple
of DVD Rom drives on laptops that haven't played 'em but have -r.

Yes, but were they recent laptops? Every DVD drive manufactured in at least
the last couple of years will play +R, and if they don't they're cheap
enough to throw away and buy one that does :)

Sorry for the selective quoting, but look at
http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/dvd-rnoprint.html .
 There's not a problem finding 16X -r media.

They were Advent laptop drives (PC World jokes not withstanding they were
both cheap and good laptops!). I don't have them any more but they came
with Windows ME on them...so about 4 years ago?

Getting back on topic slightly :-) does anyone have any more info on this
Aldi recorder? I can't see if I can record "non protected discs" onto the
HDD. Or is that standard?

Yep, good old SVP - they only started listing those a fortnight or so ago,
before that the fastest -r's they did were 8x. +r's on the other hand were
16x since last year!
