nationalrail.co.uk - Plan my journey...
I'm driving to Littlehampton next weekend, dropping off a vehicle and
returning by train. I thought I might take the family and make a day of
it - does it really cost £20-ish per person for a single?

It'd be chaeaper to drive the vehicle home again then drive it back
down to Littlehampton!

And the pricing makes no sense. The cheap tickets cost more and at the
same time less than the standard...

The pricing anomalies are because the fare in one direction is more
than in the other - usually it's journeys starting in London that are
more expensive but it can be the other way round.

It's normal for a cheap day return to be pence more than a single (in
many areas)

A family railcard might recoup its cost on one journey like this
(depending on the size of your family)

Cheaper to get a 10 Southern DaySave ticket 7 days in advance from their
website.
Valid on all Southern trains, but not valid before 10am, nor on trains
leaving London
in the peak (Mon-Fri).
