Lake Windermere
Hi all
I was gonna ask a question about Lake Windermere
but thought I should say "Hi" first and see if it was safe on here!

Not exactly - we may have emailed each other once or twice, i used to
frequent the group a lot when i was into my PC's and that sort of stuff
- then i bought a Mac and everything began to make more sense...

But seriously, that was like five or so years ago and i had a brief
spell on the group maybe a couple of years back - i can't remember
exactly. But you've been around on usenet under that alias to warrant
your own Wikipedia entry... ;)

Re: Lake Windermere
You are wasting your time posting here because < uk.local.*> news
groups, all of them, have been from the very beginning and will be to
the very end safe play areas for all sorts of raging nutters, social
malcontents, control freaks and malevolent beings.
You may feel that they should go elsewhere but where? The asylums
are all closed. Every so often they stop taking their medication and
go off their fucking heads. What would you have of them? Standing in
their back yards at midnight howling to the full moon and frightening
the shit out of the neighbours into the bargain? Have them running
around shafting masons, suspected vampires, werewolves, communists,
socialists, conservatives and women with vaginal warts by the dozen?
OR harmlessly making utter cunts of themselves in a uk.local group?
Lets face it what is one other cunt amongst the many?? I know what I
prefer!! The uk.local hierarchy of newsgroups is a valuable safety
valve which helps to keep society a wee bit more safe.
You may disagree. I would be interested to hear your opinion and no
doubt would the rest of the group. Thanks in advance.

Yes: its safe.

Lake Windermere is a lake, and you can't water-ski on it any more.

The locals are friendly and don't bite, if that's what you mean. Sometimes
they'll even buy you a pint if you hang around here long enough.

We were hoping to have had another break up there in Cumbria this month but
I foolishly started to renovate the shower room and am now committed to
doing a major DIY job. At the moment we have no shower as I'm tanking the
room before fitting a new loo, washbasin and shower. 6 -8 weeks waiting for
deliveries, lots of plastering, including a new ceiling, and the holiday is
on the very back burner. I keep looking at the lakeland photo site and
drooling.
What's it like up there in November?

Rex. With a bad attack of the withdrawals.

Gosh, would you like a job, with Cumbrian accomodation thrown in? Plumbers
here are like hens' teeth, and our bathroom could do with more or less
exactly what you're doing in yours.

I keep looking at the lakeland photo site and

Wet, dark and cold a lot of the time, as you might expect. Except, of
course, on those rare, glorious, lambent autumn days that creep up without
warning. Then, it's wonderful: glowing autumnal colours in the forests and
golden brown light everywhere you look.

I think the worst thing is the early nights at that time of year. You get
one of these lovely days, but by the time you've decided it really *is* a
lovely day, and you really ought to be out there making the most of it, it's
half finished and pitch dark before 5 o'clock.

Since when has off-topic-ness put anyone off around here? Just keep
comparing it with Cumbrian weather and you'll be fine....

Not that I really want to hear about how great your weather is, mind....

Weve had a bit of an entertainment drought down here this season, City
Council in there wisdom withdrew most of the funding for festivals and
the local venues havent been putting much on.
The even pulled the plug on the Maritime festival, even tho it`s just won
amajor award!

It all starts again next month tho - there`s details on my website if
your interested.

A morris festival would be a good idea, peripatetic of course...
combined with real ale week.

John O gaunt have improved significantly lately, they seem to have more
musicians these days, tho the average age of the dancers is still about
60 ;o) and Crook Morris are rather entertaining.
With these silly new licencing regulations, we might be seeing a lot
more "morris sides" like the AC-DC tribute Morris, or QUEEN (the
whiffling stick years) :oD

Re: Lake Windermere
A problem shared.
I have an overwhelming need to share this with you all. Its about what
I hate most about newsgroups . . . . control freaks like netnannies
and net cops and here is why.

They are like when a little bit of shite gets stuck just inside yer
rectum not far enough down that you can squeeze it either in or out.
It just lies there, you feel it but can do nought about it. It just
sits there and irritates the hell out of you. The only effect is the
production of irritation nothing else. That is really what they are
like. They achieve nothing else. The trolls are still there!!

Shite in yer rectum will eventually be resolved. Netnannies and
netcops are always there. The name and individual may change but there
is always some shit baiting and upsetting harmless trolls. The effect
is to give the troll a mission in life. Look at the uk.local hierarchy
at the moment, yorkshire, birmingham and essx in particular. Ruined
for the average poster. The majority of groups are empty, except for
troll droppings, spam and the odd genuine post!!!

What amazes me is that some of the netnannies not only boast about
reporting contributors to their ISP but attempt to get other people
to do the same. This gives the troll an extra boast of "adrenaline".
Its all beyond me!

Maybe I am too sensitive a guy.

Thanks for your interest.

Yeah, we've danced with both of them. We sometimes meet up at a halfway
point like Ambleside, and then of course we attend the Furness festival from
time to time. Both good sides.

Indeed. Maybe some more enterprising morris dancers could take advantage of
this and set up workshops for musicians to learn a few morris steps/dances
so that they can comply with the regs.

I can't take orders. Sorry, Ally. I have these mad plumbing forays every so
often. Many years ago I fitted my own gas fired central heating to the
bungalow I had in Uppingham and last year I fitted a new kitchen to this
house. That involved moving the plumbing so that Erica could view the garden
while working at the sink. I do it out of neccessity, not for pleasure.

Much like the rest of the country, by the sounds of it. Is it any wetter?

I am already complaining at having to put the lights on just after 8pm. We
seem to have galloped into autumn without any summer worth mentioning.

Dunno, but looks like we're about to have even fewer tradesmen as apparently
the Australian government have started trying to recruit new immigrants,
including plumbers! I think we're all just going to have to learn these
trades for ourselves. I can do most electrical work, and painting &
decorating's OK, but apart from the odd tap washer I've never entered the
realms of plumbing. (Well, unless you count repairing brass
instruments....but that's another story...)

Didn't really think so. Oh well, it was worth a try!

That involved moving the plumbing so that Erica could view the garden

Now that's interesting. When we got a new kitchen in this house, I
deliberately *didn't* want the sink at the window. I want to spend as little
time as possible at the sink. I want to sit at the table gazing idly
outside, rather. So the big dining table sits at the window, and the sink is
against the opposite wall.

Dunno about the rest of the country! It's wetter than Edinburgh, for sure,
and the west wind feels quite different from the Edinburgh east wind, but
other than that I can't tell you.

We had a bit of summer in June. Last night I was awakened by a storm
rattling the stair window and hurling rain at the bedroom one. When I went
outside in the (sunny!) morning, I found all my mint plants were naked. The
storm seems to have blown all the leaves off and chucked them under the back
door. Very odd. Nice smell when we swept up, though.

So I guess that's it for summer this year.

I have just been down to the orchard- the bnottom of our garden to check the
wind damage. I was wondering just when to pick the apples but now about half
of them are fallen. I guess I'd better earmark the next fine day to get the
ladders out and apple pick. We do like to freeze a year's supply of cookers
for the occasional pie or stewed apples in the winter.

Re: Lake Windermere
Hi
Thanks for the further info, did think of hill of oaks, but not convinced
with that either.

Of course, its possible the place doesnt actually exist anymore!

The only way I'd be 100% certain is to see an image, taken from the lake,
looking towards the pebbly
shore [thats about the only bit I remember well]

The shore [as you stood looking out] had a jetty constructed of large stones
onm the left and a rather
ramshackled boat house to the right - neither is probably still there now.

If only I had a photo!

Thanks anyways

Sounds like your best bet is actually to visit the place, and spend a day
walking or cycling slowly along the shoreline, checking every possible
location as you go. A wonderful way to spend a nice day in the Lake
District, I'd say!

Well, the jetty will have been rebuilt to a higher standard, as will the
boathouse. So something similar is probably there now.

Where are all these Windermere locals when you need them?

Re: Lake Windermere
OK, I'll ask......

When I was a kid [early 70's ] I stayed at a caravan site on the edge of
Lake Windermere.
I'm trying to locate the place.

The site was in a wood, on the east side, near Bowness. The place had static
vans [may have been tourers too though I don't remember them]
Possibly a club house also for sailing types.

All I really remember was a slope by the caravan that lead down to a small
pebble shore. As you stood on the shore and looked out you could see a large
white house on the opposite side [a rather grand and isolated place]. as you
looked across the lake, maybe looking NW there was an island [don't recall
how big or small the island was]

Does this ring any bells?

Many thanks if anyone can help.

Cheers

The place you are talking about is called Fall Barrow on the east side near

Well, gosh, we'd better come up with something controversial for everyone to
contribute to, or the newsgroup's going to stagnate while Edith's nursing
her sore shoulder.

We could talk about the weather. It's raining. But that's hardly worth
contributing to, either.

Bird Flu: Precautions.

What we need is a full-time Patron Saint exclusively for Chickens,
both free-range and Broiler House. We have a well known Patron Saint
for Animals, Saint Francis. But his responsibility is fairly diffuse
taking in all birds. With 90 million or more chickens in Europe alone
the problem is immense. For those who doubt the breadth of this
Saints responsibilities and its effects (or lack) just cast your
memory back to the BSE catastrophe. All practicing catholics and
wooden ones should be pressuring their local priests to put forward a
suitable name to the appropriate Vatican authorities. The last pope
was well known for creating new saints and this one was a close ally
and friend. The prospects are promising.

It would be best to clear whatever course of action or in-action you
take with the Office of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith.
You don't want The Office of the Inquisition banging on your door!

Hmm.. I'm not convinced.
I did come across fall barrow in my searching and thought that was it, but
it seems not.
I asked my brother and he said:

"I remember it being hidden in the trees, if I
remember correctly the site entrance was hidden as well
I remember it had a jetty and a small shop and the appraoch was down a hill"

It must be there somewhere :-)

Well it certainly sounds like somewhere on Windermere, but it's a big lake,
and I live too far north to know it well enough to pinpoint the spot. I
wonder if the big white house could have been Brathay Hall? (Clutching at
straws here - it's the only big house on the lake whose name I know...)

There's a mad naked (yes, really!) Welshwoman called Hannah who lives down
there and would be able to help, no doubt, but she's not been seen recently
and I suspect it's because her baby has arrived.

There's also a chap from the campaign against the Windermere speed limit who
appears from time to time - I'm sure he could help!

It's dead quiet here just now though. I think most of uklc are away on
holiday.

I'm not local, but been googling and looking at a map of the area...

Braithwaite Fold Caravan Club Site maybe?

I found this and the other one mentioned on this site...

http://www.lake-district.com/Cumbria/Bowness-on-Windermere/Accommodation.html I
filtered the name to include "caravan"

This caravan site is at....

www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=54.3583&lon=-2.9232&scale=25000&icon=x

Big island to the NW, probably totally wrong though!

Hi All
Further to my quest - some more info [from my sister] - may ring a bell or
two?

the caravan site is on the '592' road from
Newby Bridge to Bowness on Windermere, with Bowness behind you the caravan
site is about 1/2 way down on the right hand side,
