Taurus - what happened to this loco ?
Dear all,
An enquiry from a friend; what happened to Taurus, the experimental
diesel shunter 0-8-0, built by the Yorkshire Engine Co.
This was on loan to BR for some time in the early 60s, sort of Lion and
Falcon time.
Was it scrapped, or......?
cheers, Kester

Withdrawn and scrapped in 1964.

A near similar YE 0-8-0 does, I think, still exist. Last I heard of it
it was at Cottesmore. YE works number 2894 , I think it is an Indus
model rather than a Taurus model but it is a near relative. Can't seem
to locate a web image for it.

Not Janus, is it? AFAIK that one's still around.

No, the Janus model was an 0-6-0, BR also had one on trial.
Taurus and Indus were two different 0-8-0 models, unsure what the
difference is.
There was also a larger machine either a BB or a BoBo called the
Olympus model but I don't think any of those ran in the UK although I
would wlecome any data on that.
I assume the model names ending in -us were a referecne to United Steel
who took over YE at some point in its history.

A thought occurs, did the 0-4-0 have a model name, like the ones
supplied to BR that became class 02 ?

Re: Taurus - what happened to this loco ? (another one in Spain does exist)
All this got me seaching, and I found an export loco to another main
line rail system I vaguely heard of before but forgot all about. Seems
like YE exported a Taurus to Spain and it still exists.
http://www.lineasdeltren.com/Lineas04/historia02.htm
in Spanish google translates as :
''...
The only representative of the English traction diésel in Spain is the
tractor of maneuvers that constitutes in solitaire series 10600, soon
306-001 with the numeration of the RENFE. This tractor had been
constructed by Yorkshire Engine Co, in Sheffield, England, and is
Taurus type. It has 4 axes to each other built-up engines by means of
connecting rods, two motors diésel of 300 CV each one, Rolls Royce,
and a hydraulic transmission by motor, also Rolls Royce. The tractor
served in the RENFE, for a reason or purpose of test, from 1963, but it
was acquired by the RENFE to Naval in 1966. Possibly, the construction
of this prototype was fruit of a collaboration between Naval and
Yorkshire. This tractor did not have descendants and it is conserved
in the Museum of Delights. The little influence of the English diesel
traction in Spain could be explained because old British Ferrocarriles
(BR) carried out a process of transformation of the steam to diésel
very fast and at still early time for the state of technological
development in Europe. This precipitation in the implantation produced
enough problems and failures in several series of locomotives diésel
in Great Britain. For that reason, it seems logical that the American
technology for the line locomotives was preferred in Spain, or other
European technologies for the tractors of maneuvers.
....''
So wherever the ''museum of delights'' is, there is a Taurus.
On further googling on RENFE and 10600 I found this :

with images.

Re: Taurus - what happened to this loco ?
Ah, thanks for that Rich.
Of course, he has now asked me; what colour was it ? (Only ever seen in
B&W on piccies, of course.)
And I wondered; where did it work when it was on BR anyway ?
And I suppose.....was it any good ? If not why not ?
(That should be enough to double the thread length.)

The "Museum of Delights" is the railway museum located in the old Delicias
station in Madrid. Well worth a visit.

I have the BR WR CM&EE Swindon test report into the trials they carried
out.
I do not wish to reveal too much here ;o) but essentially the machine
was found to perform fully to the makers specification, but not what WR
had in mind, falling short of a 500 hp for *traction* power requirment,
and was too heavy for specified 'yellow' RA.

Janus and Taurus are covered on pp217-219 in Colin Marsden's The Diesel
Shunter.
Caption for Taurus says:
"Two views of the larger 0-8-0 Taurus built by Yorkshire Engine Co and
offered to the BTC/BR as a main line trip locomotive. The design had two
Rolls Royce prime movers, one in each bonnet section, driving a central
hydraulic transmission. Taurus was certified by the BTC and performed
limited trials at Doncaster Works, Stratford and in the Bristol Docks area.

Introduced 1961.

The WR trials took place around Swindon, fully documented if he had
been bothered to research first.

Hence the Swindon built teddy bears of a few years later with 650hp
installed.
