Fare Question - Orrell Park (Liverpool) - Brighton
Hello all, I have a fares-related question for all you knowledgeable
types. On Friday 2nd September I am travelling from Orrell Park to
Brighton, returning on the Sunday (4th September). is there a cheaper
way of doing this journey than the standard saver return fare? Any
help appreciated!

A quick check on the National Rail site shows availability for Virgin Values
a VV7 on 2 September at GBP20, and a VV3 on 4 September at GBP25, compared
with GBP69.80 for the Saver Return.

Thanks very much for your help Peter, but unfortunately I can't specify
my journey times, so the VVs aren't appropriate!

Surely one of you fares geniuses can come up with something to help a
poor student! Any ideas appreciated!

Sorry about the previous blank post.
As you need the flexibility of a Saver, and it's not a day return, it won't
be easy to find anything much cheaper. APEX, e.g. Virgin Values, are a lot
cheaper, if they're available and you are able to specify your trains. For
day return jouneys that are too far for a CDR it is often possible to make
savings over a Saver by splitting the journey into a succession of CDRs.
One possibility that might save a bit would be to use Chiltern for the
Birmingham to London leg - they have some attractive fares (e.g. GBP15
return, IIRC, Birmingham - London if you travel in the middle of the day or
in the evening).
Presumably as a poor student you hold a YP card.
