magic morning on Pillar
I arrived at the summit of Pillar late this morning to find it deserted..on
a Saturday in august!
I sat on my own in warm sunshine for a good 25 minutes then a walker came &
went without stopping then I had a another 15 minutes on my own..magic!
the weather & visibility were perfect I wish you could have seen the views I
saw today, simply beautiful.
looking down into Ennerdale what clouds there were, their shadows were moving
across the fellside,a sight to bring out the poet in anyone.
then everyone arrived on the summit at once,a man set up a mast about 15
feet high with an antenna on top stabilised by guide wires,I never asked why
but his dog who must have seen it all before collapsed in a heap & went to
sleep!

More likely to be some amateur working DX. There is an interest in some
amateur quarters about working from fell tops. I used to do it (years ago)
but only with a whip and a hand-held (oh, all right then, an FT290
sometimes....).
Sounds like a good place to work into Ireland.

Super day. Luckily, not so many people can be bothered to explore the
Western Lakes, so you do get magic days like this.

Events seem to conspire to keep the station open.

I passed down that way the other week. Some of the masts are still
standing, but the place is a shadow of its former self. Even the wildlife
conspires to keep the place open, as the bunnies nobbled the detonator wires
when they tried to blast the masts down!
I expect things will change in 2007 though....

Re: magic morning on Pillar
To brighten your day
a Poem.
In days of old
When men were bold
And women weren't invented
They bored a hole
In a telegraph pole
And pumped away contented.
