What do you want the laptop to do?

I've got some Dell laptops to put on ebay next week. spec is not quite as
good, but arguably better built, and will be cheaper.

Bear in mind that comet are not at all easy to deal with if things go wrong.
Personally, I will not buy from them again if I can possibly avoid it.

My mother and sister each have a budget Acer laptop. They're decent machines
all round really, though my sister's battery is starting to lose charge just
over a year after purchase. Normally cheap acers are very heavy (3.5-4kgs)
but this one is 2.8kg according to the specs, which is good for the price.

Just a suggestion - does it really have to be a laptop? For the same money,
you'll get a better spec, upgradeable PC system. The spec of a laptop may
look similar to a desktop PC, but the hard drives are typically slower. Will
you be moving the laptop around, or just keeping it in your room?
My daughters decided to go with PCs in the end for uni and have not
regretted it. A bit more to pack in the car at the end of term, but
manageable enough...
If you want to play Quake, you'll need a decent graphics card.

Buy the laptop. I lugged by desktop for the first year. Switched to a
lappy after that.

If you don't mind grade 2 units, which have been OK in my experience so far,
then try
http://www.pc-interworks.co.uk/acatalog/buyit247_net_Grade_2_Fujitsu_Siemens_Computers_3.html
for slightly better value for money.

Comet are easy to deal with when "things go wrong". If you're not civilised
to them, then don't expect them to make things easy. I doubt many have had
trouble. One item I ordered was delivered damaged and after one phonecall
they picked it up and brought a new one.
It's all down to how you speak to people and how polite you are. Go
shouting your mouth off about your rights as a customer and terrible service
and you will be put to the bottom of the queue.
Give specific examples that can be proved to show COMET are as you suggest.
I would be interested, not just hearsay or what a mate told you! You know
how stories are invented.
I noticed you mentioned DELL, I work in an organisation that had a UK
contract to supply equipment. The most common problem with the desktops is
the power supplies are too small so overheat, the cooling is inadequate so
the base units sound like hovercrafts after a while.
The DELL laptops tend to be low-end spec models at high prices compared to
others on the market. I did a lot of research before buying a very nice
laptop from COMET, a Compaq, and getting 50 off with a discount code.
COMET offered the best specs for the money and the fastest processor
compared to others. If you want to buy a name fair enough, pay another
200-300. Do some research and you will find DELL are not the best value
for a laptop. The build quality on the ones I used was no different to
other laptops. You have to look at who makes the cases for DELL and other
manufacturers.

I don't think the Acer's graphics are good enough for Quake, but the comet
website is very sparse on detailed info, just mentions 64mb of shared
memory, ie pinches some of the main RAM for the graphics. I think you will
be struggling to find a laptop at anywhere close to that price with good
enough graphics to run quake properly.

Yours might be, but none of them round here are. Some time ago I bought a
basic (Siemens I think it was) computer off them. As soon as I got it home
and unpacked I noticed that none of the COM ports were working. After
checking everything obvious (BIOS, drivers etc.) I took it back the same
day. Some spotty little oik masquerading as the "Customer Dis-service
Manager" claimed that it was supposed to be like that and they wouldn't
replace it or refund my money. I asked to see the manager (whilst staying
polite) and was refused as "he'd only say the same". It's surprising how
quickly their attitude changed when I rang Trading Standards on my mobile
from right next to their tills (whilst watching people leaving goods and
walking out in disgust over their method of trading).

I also had a problem of a video that was about two years old that failed.
As usual, they denied any and all responsibility and wouldn't even look at
it. That one got as far as a Small Claims Court Summons being issued before
they sat up and decided that I wasn't going to go away and that they should
actually honour their legal obligations. That one cost them in excess of
300 for a 120 video.

Agreed.

> I doubt many have had trouble.

Comet are generally worse than DSG for returns, especially if the item is
over twelve months old.

As it should have been.

Agreed, you can politely inform them of your legal rights if necessary, but
they'll still deny that you actually have any.

See above.

> I would be interested, not just hearsay or what a mate told you! You know

Yup, unfortunately there are many horror stories regarding the lack of
customer service at Comet that are just as true as the ones relating to DSG.

<snipped amusing anecdotes>

I have no idea why Ade thinks Comet are easy to deal with. My experiences
with them have been completely the reverse. Most of the comments I have seen
have been similar. I avoid them like the plague!!

You mean it's some sort of macho thing to shop at Comet? Can you stand their
customer dis-services? You're only a real man if you can put up with having
your time wasted by them? No thanks!

it would be so easy for me to say "that neatly proves you're an easily flapped fag
who'd flounce out of the shop the moment a PFY disagreed with you" but that's
too easy. it's not about macho, it's about standing your ground, assuredly, and
sticking to your guns, not giving up like some drama queen.

No, it's about avoiding having to stick to your guns to start off with.
Many retailers will attempt to deny any responsibility, but there are those
out there who act in a professional manner and deal with problems as they
should. Surely they deserve the business more than somewhere like Comet or
DSG. You might save a few quid by shopping with Comet (doubtful), but if
anything goes wrong you'll wish you'd shopped elsewhere.

I notice our local Tesco (spit) are now selling Acer desktops and lappies.
I didnt pay much attention so can't quote specs, but I think the price of
the lappie was about 470

LOL! That's really very, very funny.

Have you ever had to deal with Comet customer services over the telephone, I
wonder? Good luck.

was in there today, the Acer laptop I saw was 748 and the desktop was
478, didn't bother looking at the spec when I saw the price

I would agree. Fight your corner if you have to, but why go searching for
hassle. I suspect "news" just likes an argument (in comet or on Usenet).

so would I.

good question. why ask it ? if you buy a sealed box of whatever from a retailer
it's pot luck as to which box will have a duff un inside and even potter luck as to
which box will suffer infant mortality (dies within weeks) OR gives up the ghost
on day 367. there's nothing you can do about all that because at the point of
purchase, that's all in a potential future.

me ? I'll buy wherever seems to give the best overall value, where ever it is,
and know that whatever happens post purchase, I'll be able to get my money
back or get the product replaced. remember, 98% of the time you're only up
aginst an underpaid telemonkey or some vacant instore PFY.

take it or leave it. there is no argument. I'm right. and you know it.

I'm glad we all agree on something.

True.

Good luck with your 367 day old product at Comet. After 365 days they don't
want to know. You and I both know that their responsibilities extend beyond
one year (and so do Comet), but they'll do everything they can to abrogate
that responsibility - right up to the point you're going through the small
claims court procedure.

No, you're wrong. Some retailers (John Lewis for example) provide a decent
aftersales service (they also price match), so why not reduce the chance of
having all that hassle to start off with?

Absolutely agree. Case in point today - rang John Lewis over a hob bought 16
months ago and just gone wrong. They confirmed it is covered by their 2 year
warranty. They asked if I had the receipt. As I no longer had it, they
looked up the purchase on their computer system and they are posting me a
copy. Fantastically helpful, and all done in 5 mins.

I really cannot see why people bother with stores like Comet that give third
rate service.

Right, so you've decided that you're wrong and instead of standing up and
accepting it you hurl abuse instead? Vary mature (not).

If you still disagree, let's hear some sensible reasons why.

That and a fag and a drama queen? Must be getting desperate.

BTW, most people who call others fags etc seem to be uncomfortable about
their own sexuality. I don't care whether you are gay or straight, but I
think you would benefit from getting yourself sorted out one way or the
other.

Good luck

Blimey ... you can get a decent lappie for 748 ;o)

They must have been different models. I'm sure the desktop was sub 400,
while the lappie was 470.
Next time I'm in the store I'll take more notice and report back

They can't not deal with your problem - they have obligations under the
Sale Of Goods Act. If you allow them to fob you off then it's just your
problem.
