Name that tune?
#Here I sit and try to share the feeling,
with which I'm dealing, at this late hour.
Every day's the same, just eat and drinking,
some fourty-winking, and being sour.
Been through every video and novel,
within this hovel - I'm not impressed.
Nothing on the box I find appealing,
stare at the ceiling and get depre-e-e-e-e-e-
e-e-e-essed.

I'm bored,
sick and mentally floored,
and just a bit inured,
after all I've endured.
Moored,
hauled up in dry dock and stored,
no recompense or reward,
let's face it - _I'm bored_.

I've bounced around and aroun'
both upstairs and down, in every room.
I'll cause the neighbours to panic
when I go quite manic, and howl at the moon.
(Right girls?)

Mired,
caffeine and nicotine wired,
totally damn uninspired,
of this life, I'm tired.
(I've got to get out of this place!)

He's bored. (He's bored!)
Sick and mentally floored. (He's not a monk!)
And just a bit inured. (Who would've thunk?)
After all he's endured (Give the guy a break!)
Mired. (Help him out!)
Caffeine and nicotine wired. (Give him a test!)
Totally damn uninspired. (He's had his rest!)
He's bored. (Can't you see he's nuts?)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh
ahhhhhhhhhhhh
ah what's the point?

I'm,
I'm so,
bored.

That sounds like a real song, Sleepy, but it's also quoted with feeling.
What is it?

As for boredom, how can we help? Have you thought of trying to learn a new
skill? Obviously something that doesn't take too much physical effort....
Can you play a musical instrument? Why not learn a new language? Painting or
drawing is good, and you might have more talent than you realised. How about
taking up some obscure programming language? Create a website?

Dunno. Wish I could help.

At least you can sing. I seem to have brought some nasty bug back from
Edinburgh with me, and I'm losing my voice, from the top notes downwards. I
can still sing the bass notes but the top of my range has gone and my
speaking voice is beginning to deterioriate now. (Cue Edith with humorous
comments .... ) Soon I'll be speaking or singing on a monotone, or worse
still, whispering.

I still recall the hogmanay party one year when I had a nasty dose of
something-or-other, which included my voice disappearing. I had to do a sort
of shout/whisper thing so that people could hear me over the party noises,
and then, all of a sudden, my voice came back, and I found I was yelling
loud enough for the whole room to hear. Talk about red face!

Who's your song by, Sleepy? What's it called? Maybe I'll try and write you
an optimistic song. (You know, a sort of, "chin up, lad - you're no deid
yet!")

I made up the lyric to the tune from a song in a film.

>As for boredom, how can we help?

I'm not sure that you can. I recall a few lines from an episode
of "Northern Exposure"...(paraphrased)

"I'm bored."
"Well, you're bored because you're boring",
 "Now I'm angry."
"Good - that's not boring!"

Does this mean I'm the master of my own fate?
Should I be attempting to be entertaining?
Should I just get angry and post vitriolic diatribes? ;-)
(Can one be _too_ introspective?)

>Have you thought of trying to learn a new skill?

I'm interested in the survival aspects of the neolithic and
bronze ages. So I'd like to be able to knap flint, make a stone
axe, make a bow and arrows and spears, make fire, make
pottery, smelt copper, and so on.

(I've watched a lot of Ray Meers stuff - he's such a cheat!)

>Obviously something that doesn't take too much physical effort....

yep, maybe next year...

>Can you play a musical instrument?

I've struggled with the guitar for 15 years, but I don't have an
ounce of talent for it. I don't have perfect pitch, and I can't read
music but I can pick out a few tunes and strum enough chords
to sing along to, and keep myself happy.

>Why not learn a new language?

I don't intend to go anywhere where the people don't speak english.
I've considered learning sign language, but I've never even met a
deaf person outside of hospital, and the deaf people I've met in
hospital are old folk who don't sign. (And the deafer they are, the
noisier they are!)

> Painting or drawing is good, and you might have more talent than
>you realised.

I'm afraid I have the drawing ability of a 10 yo, and the painting
ability of a 5 yo. In fact, I don't seem to _have_ a talent at all.
(Not that I mind this: I'm quite used to my mediocrity.) If I could
be granted a talent, I would like to be able to make important
points in a witty and inscisive manner.

>How about taking up some obscure programming language?

I've done some machine code, assembly language and a bit of
basic, but that was back when they were appropriate to the machines
I was using. These days it's a whole different ballgame.

It's original? I am seriously impressed. What was the tune? I want to sing
it now! (Well, sing it inside my head until my real voice comes back...)

Yes; not necessarily; no; probably.

Now that would be fun, and educational to boot.

He is? Please elucidate!

Well, perfect pitch is a handicap to most people who have it. All you need
is reasonable relative pitch, but even without that there's nothing to stop
you playing something well enough to enjoy it. So if you can strum along
with your singing, that is definitely something.

Yeah, I used to write BASIC. I miss those old machines. I was doing
something the other day - can't remember what, now - and I thought, "if I
just had my old Beeb in working order I'd whip up a quick BASIC routine to
do the calcs for me". And then I remembered that that's what spreadsheets
are for, and ended up using MS excel instead. But it wasn't as much fun.

What's broadband got to do with it? I've been designing websites since last
century, and I've only gone on to broadband a few months ago. Make nice
straightforward websites with easy-to-download graphics and they'll work
fine on dial-up.

It's like the old computers, once again. When you were restricted to 64k of
memory, your coding had to be precise and concise without an ounce of
unnecessary bumph. Nowadays programmers can be as wasteful as they like with
memory, which is probably one reason why things keep going wrong. Same thing
with website design. So long as there are likely to be people visiting your
site who are still using dial-up modems, your html has to be straightforward
and the page has to download quickly. No big photos or flashy flash pages.

Go on - design a website! I dare you!

Great fun, as always. I'm up there all the time as my son's still there, but
I particularly like going during the Festival. I always buy a few tickets
for music things on the Fringe, and spend the daytime wandering around
soaking up the atmosphere.

Here's a few things we went to see:
http://www.pleasance.co.uk/edin/prog/PLUCK/
http://www.saxchoir.com/
http://www.fraserfifield.com/
http://www.edinburgh-festivals.com/reviews.cfm?id=1781232005

....and then there was the open day at the mosque with free curry. Yum.

Anyway, I now know where your talent lies: songwriting. I'm going to start
creating my own tune for it in a minute if you don't somehow teach me the
'proper' one!

It's "I'm Tired" sung by "Lili Von Shtupp" (Madeline Kahn)
in the film "Blazing Saddles".

Hmmm; no?; awww; ah.

[snip survival / skills]

He survives by being fully kitted out for survival!
His knife blade was forged for him, his bow was carved
for him, his reindeer boots were made for him: even
his drill-and-block firelighting kit is pre-prepared.
(I don't believe he can find sawn, planed, seasoned
hardwood in a coniferous forest.)
Really, what he does is find food and water in places
where he's surrounded by food and water.
If I was running the show, he'd have one set of clothes,
a mosquito net and some water purifying tablets.

I should think they wince more than the rest of us.

Now I'm trying to find this song online. Hmm. There's another "I'm tired"
too, but the one I want is by Mel Brooks....

Ha! Yes! I see what you mean.

Converting to Pakistani food - yes! I came home with proper Pakistani
Basmati rice and cumin seeds. I grew up with Indian curries - my mum had
lived and worked there in her youth - and was sick of the stuff, but
Pakistani curry is different and tantalises my taste buds. Now I plan to
have some fun in the kitchen. I'll invite you round for a curry once I've
perfected it, if you like!

That would be nice. Thanks. I still can't find the tune either! Maybe I just
need to get the video/DVD of the film.... wonder if Steve's got it in his
comprehensive movie library... I shall enquire.

Don't worry. Judging by tonight's efforts, it'll be a long time before I can
cook a good Pakistani curry...

Well, the film is a "must see". Here's the words...

Here I stand, the godess of desire,
set men on fire, I have this power.
Morning, noon and night it's dwink and dancing,
some qwick womancing, and then a shower.
Stagedoor-Johnnies constantly suwound me,
they always hound me, with one weqwest.
Who can satisfy their lustful habit?
I'm not a wabbit. I need some we-e-e-e-e-e-e
e-e-e-e-st.
I'm tired, sick and tired of love,
I've had my fill of love, from below and above.
Tired, tired of being admired,
tired of love uninspired.
Let's face it, I'm tired !
I've been with thousands of men, again and again,
they promise the Moon.
They're always coming and going and going and coming -
and always too soon. Right girls?
Tired, tired of playing the game,
aint it cwying shame, I'm so tired.
Goddammit, I'm exhausted!

<interlude>
Tired, tired of playing the game,
aint it cwying shame, I'm so tired.

<Chorus line>
She's tired. (She's tired.)
Sick and tired of love. (Give her a break.)
She's had her fill of love. (She's not a snake.)
From below and above.(Can't you see she's sick.)
Tired. (She's bushed.)
Tired of being admired. (Let her alone.)
Tired of love uninspired. (Get off the phone?)
 She's tired. (Can't you see she's pooped.)

I've been with thousands of men, again and again,
they sing the same tune.
They start with Byron and Shelley, then jump on your
belly and burst your balloons. Oy!
Tired, tired of playing the game,
aint it fwiggin' shame, I'm so...
Let's face it, everything below the waist is Kaput!

<Chorus line>
Tired !

I'll have a go at the music, (it'll keep me busy)
but I'm not optimistic about it.

She's in a commerical playing here. Something to do with 'natural tears'.

Brill, thanks! I've seen the film a couple of times on TV, and it really was

humour, but that movie was good enough to make me laugh out loud (which not

That sounds far too scary for me to enquire further.
I'm afraid I have a bad reaction to commercials generally -
they make me want to kill! ;-)

I don't think I've seen her on tv for a decade or so, so I
couldn't say - but she was, imo, very sexy. :))

(Sorry for the delay - I'm still a bit up-and-down.)

Well, I can't actually *remember* the tune, 'cause it's a wee while since I
saw the film, but don't worry about it. Turns out it's not in Steve's
collection either.

Hmm. Yes. Sort of. Now if I turn that into a midi file and send it back to
you, (by email, as everyone else will be sick of this by now!) you can play
it and tell me if it's right... Not sure how long the notes are supposed to
be, but I'll try to make them fit the words.

Do you read music? Abc is the format most musicians use on the internet, but
you do need to understand the dots to use it.

Nah. Actually, it was a pretty good one. I have a terrible memory. Could
watch the movie today and forget about the tune tomorrow.

Wise.

Keep hoping with my next television/remote control purchase there will be a
button marked 'commercial blocker on/off'. It'll work like a pop-up
blocker.

She's still pretty with a mature look about her. All the guys at my house
liked Maggie O'Connell too. Didn't hurt that she could fly and repair her
own plane.

<g> you really may have a knack for this. This one may fit you (a little).
It's by Delbert McClinton

Gonna sit right down in my easy chair
Pull out a deck of cards, play some solitaire
Break out a bottle, wash me a glass
To keep me company 'til the feelings pass
Everybody needs someting to do
Me, I'll just sit here and think about you
It might seem hopeless, but it ain't that bad yet
It's just the blues as blues can get...

Sure they're sexy. It pays to know that, if you're a straight woman and
she's looking at your fella.

Is this Maggie O'Connell that you're talking about?

Yeah. Takes me back. There was a certain point in my teens when we all
started wearing loads of dark eyeliner and mascara. I guess it was a sort of
pre-goth thing. (They hadn't invented goths yet, I don't think.) Oh, yes,
and white lipstick. No idea what that was about!

She was even better when she was younger: she's looking
a bit lean there (and she's not smiling).

That's what Kai Hsia's hair looks like now - and with her almond eyes....
