the Worcester sauce thing is a red herring, its a red dye
associated with ground chilli or something. Last time I looked
Lea and Perins wasnt on the list, but a small company importing
chilli powder has gone into liquidation.

Worcester Sauce isn't a red herring - AIUI, it's precisely how the chili
got into all these chavmeals.
The problem is that Worcester Sauce - even the industrial "Premier"
Foods/Crosse & Blackwell stuff has to ferment for a year or so.
http://www.premierfoods.co.uk/news/press/worcester-sauce.cfm
It's probably in the ingredients as an anonymous "flavouring".

I gather the Worcestershire sauce in question was not the real Lea and
Perrins but an imitation made by Cross and Blackwell for use in fast food
and easy meals mostly.

Quick before they get sued!
Chilli powder isn't supposed to be dyed red to make it look fresher, but
the processors test for all the normal adulterants. Not including Sudan
1 apparently.
Why's the Real Ale group getting this - oh, look - there's the pub menu
in the last update. Wetherspoons chili, W&D burgundy beef, Jugg
Foods... why's there only one Brake Bros item?
I think I'll eat before I go to the pub!

Some dodgy Indian companies use Sudan 1 to make their shady chilli powder
look red. I'm actually amazed the newspapers etc haven't really mentioned
this, they've made it look like it was accidentally contaminated.
I bought some Lea and Perrins Worchestershire Sauce yesterday, tastes good.

Maybe it's the branding that is causing the confusion. When I think of
Worcester Sauce I think of Lea and Perrins. Their sauce is not affected.

You're confused. When you think of "Worcester" (sic) sauce you are probably
thinking of some industrial-grade chemical-laced imitation product that's
only fit for building into ready meals, e.g. the Crosse and Blackwell
"Genuine" Worcester Sauce. Probably used in things such as Walkers
"Worcester Sauce (sic) flavoured" crisps.
There is another product, Lea and Perrins "WorcesterSHIRE Sauce", which is
the real product. Go into most supermarkets looking for WorcesterSHIRE sauce
and you'll probably only find that one excellent product on the shelves. Go
ahead and buy it because it's not affected by the current problem with
IMITATION "Worcester (sic)" sauce. If, on the other hand, you go into an
"independent" food shop, I suppose you might find the IMITATATION "Worcester
(sic)" sauce on sale. In that case, Avoid!!!
A few years ago you could buy ISTR Smiths WorcesterSHIRE sauce crisps, and
they proudly displayed a proper orange L&P bottle on the bag. Sadly a thing
of the past now, with only Walkers "Worcester (sic) sauce" "flavour" crisps
now available it seems. Pah!
The news reports have done a DISGRACEFUL job of not pointing out that L&P
(my essential ingredient in lots of recipes) is not affected.
One word of warning, and slapped wrists for the L&P company - I see that
their "tomatoey" sauce is called "Lea and Perrins Tomato & Worcester (sic)
Table Sauce". They should be a kicking themselves now. Maybe not quite
enough room on the label to fit on the proper word "Worcestershire". Or,
Heaven forbid, maybe they make it with IMITATION "Worcester (sic)" sauce
from another supplier. Hopefully not!
.... and relax.
Regards,
Simon.

There is usually an ingredient "spices" or something like that, which may

Not that I drink Real Ale anything. But don't I remember something about
"Bloody Mary?" Make sure it is not Cross and Blackwells Worcester Sauce.

Sigh. Sudan1 is a colorant, it won't be put in as a flavouring. Also, iirc
substances added at less than 0.1% don't have to be listed in the
ingredients list.

Not really a secret, all these things are brewed for a while which adds
glutamates, which are great flavour enhancers. The Romans knew it, they
had Garam (fish sauce) also Thai fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, an
those are only the ones which spring to mind.
Ob beer. Anyone tried Bloody Mary with Thai Fish sauce?

Premier hmmmm.
From Lea & Perrins website www.leaperrins.com
THE FACTS ABOUT THE SUDAN RED FOOD SCARE
Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce is NOT affected by the food
safety alert involving another Worcester Sauce that has been
widely reported in the media over the weekend.
Consumers can therefore continue to safely enjoy Lea and Perrins
Worcestershire Sauce - the Original and Genuine product with the
highest quality standards, first manufactured in 1835 and now
sold in over 100 countries worldwide.

For a real treat, try "Prairie Red Eye". That's a shot of tomato juice in a

I'm not sure of the amount. A small glass of juice is served with the beer

Any alcohol does me considerable harm and absolutely no good
*in the short term*.
My paternal grandfather drank himself to death.
At the Curry Project I see the shitty end of alcohol.
I had enough problems getting off nicotine and fight a continuous battle
with caffeine. Another addictive substance, No Thanks.
