I followed the signs 5p off per litre at tesco. It turned out that tesco's
price was 94.9p per litre with 5p off if you buy for over 50 in the store.

On the face of it, it sounds reasonable, but I was suspicious and drove to
a nearby esso tank, here the petrol was 92.9p per litre. 

So in reality it's not 5p per off, it's only 3p off per litre, and only if
you buy massively for 50 in the store, which is more than I needed.

Tesco is a retailer I am really starting to dislike, prices are expensive, 
profits are huge. The value range is really poor quality.
Customer service now appears arrogant rather than helpful.
Is this just me??

Tesco always do this when thier offer comes along. They put the price of 
fuel up by 2p per litre then start the offer, thus, as you said, it is 
actually only 3p per litre off.

Yes, that's what I don't like: "We give you 5p discount, but the 2p comes
from your own pocket...".

Come on though, its only like HMV selling dvds at 8.99 one week, then 
putting them up to 19.99 and running a BOGOF promotion on them!  Oh look i 
get a 20 dvd for free!!  Oh but hang on last week i could have bought each 
for 9 rather than 20?

Retailers have been running this con for years, maybe it worked at first but 
now i try to avoid such retailers as they obviously take their customers for 
fools.

Interestingly, Sainsbury's are doing the same this week. Spend 50 and get 5p
off.
I supposed ASDA will do it within a week or so.  Then there is the routine email
circulation about not buying Esso petrol to force the prices down so I suggest
find a Shell garage if there are any left !

Except for the supermarket brands, you can't find any other garage than BP 
where I live, and hey. guess what - all their prices are the same as BP.

Nope - we used to spend rather a lot at Tesco until about 4 months ago, 
and have been spending more and more at Morrisons... Its cheap, the 
fresh food is good, and we never seem to come out with as much crap as 
we used to from Tesco !

My local Tesco is doing the same promo - price before the offer was 89.9p 
and it still is - so it has stayed the same and is cheaper than in your 
local area.

realise that UK supermarkets don't own any oil refinaries, and therefore  
buy their petrol from one of the big names anyway, so nobody is going to

No it's not just you, I've gone right off Tesco.  Morrisons is certainly 
better than them at the moment.  I've never been a fan of Asda though, 
just something about that place, plus there's the fact it's owned by the 
evil walmart group.

Have you considered trying a discount supermarket like Aldi or Lidl?  I 
used to be a proper supermarket snob but have been very impressed by 
these 2 stores, ok, so some of the brands might be Yin-tong brands etc 
but most of them are just as good than the branded stuff.

The only thing we do have to keep buying from the big 4 is whiskas, I 
could just imagine my kittys face if I tried to give her any kind of 
"Value" catfood!  I might not be a supermarket snob any more but try 
telling the cat that!

dont they do it each year....... new year sales!!!! everyone falls for it.

You must be stupid!  Why spend far more than you need in a store on the 
promise of a reduction?
I have used the offer in tesco and you need to produce the small receipt 
they give in the store.  Then 5p is taken off each litre of petrol you buy - 
so i do not understand what your problem is.  You can not say that just 
because petrol is cheaper elsewhere that Tesco is somehow tied into that 
company and pricing.
Read your message back to yourself, I can't believe you even posted it!
Don't be a victim of sales talk and advertising, shop around and use your 
common sense, you might save more.

I noticed Morrisons had a better choice of products, Tesco is trying to 
become the Sainsburys of the supermarket range.  I always look out for 
reduced weights and price increases on some products, or reduced weights and 
prices staying the same - which is in effect an increase in price.

I buy quite a bit of petrol and do notice the prices each week because I 
need to record them etc.  I can find no evidence of Tesco increasing prices 
while the 5p/litre offer is running.  They certainly don't in the store I go 
to.  If rices do increase at any point, all garages tend to follow suit so 
they are in with the current price fixing for maximum profits.
If you can prove what you say then you would have gone to your local trading 
standards office who do regularly look out for things like that - they even 
go and measure to see that when the pump states 1 litre, that is what you're 
getting.
You can't prove what you claim.

Another thing about these money off petrol offers when you spend xyz amount
is they rarely save you more than 2.50 and thats assuming you a buying
close to a full tank. So I dont go out of my way to get them. If I happen
to be spending that amount then great, otherwise I'd rather just find the
cheapest "good" petrol.

That's exactly what I do. Why should I buy for 50 of food only to let it rot?
But more importantly, I was highlighting the con advertising of a 5p discount
when it's only 3p compared to nearby petrol stations. The optimal solution in
my case was to chose the cheaper petrol station, hence that was what I did.

you dont have to buy 50 worth of food, but plenty of people and thats what 
the offer is there for - some may spend 45 and then spend a fiver more to 
get that discount even tho it may only save them 2.50 - but thats the ppint 
from Tescos POV.

Its not a con if their petrol costs more than nearby stores unless its 
intennal - thats not the case in my area anyway...

Sorry mate, but like you I buy alot of fuel each week (upwards of 60 per 
week) and as such am constantly taking a mental note of fuel prices. I know 
where prices are the most, and who sells the cheapest. Each time Tesco have 
had this offer, thier fuel suddenly goes up by 2p the day before. This has 
happend the last 2 offers they have, and note doubt when the next offer 
starts. (It is currently not on offer where I live.)

I remember some survey from a few years back when "own branded" labels came 
into supermarkets. The one range they could never reach the success of all 
the other in was pet foods. Seems we'll eat any old beans / tomatoes etc, 
but it must be top banana for the dog / cat.

Buy a telly or whatever for 50, get your petrol, turn around, take the 
telly back and get a full refund?

hehe, My cat's can detect a Whiskas can from a mile away, in some cases 
through the bag.
Use aldi for the day to day stuff, milk bread etc.. Do a big shop (now 
normally Sainsbury's) and stock up on the BoGof's.
Only use Tesco to offload my coupons

Completely my experience.
I've always found better prices, quality, range  and useful offers at 
Morrisons.
I virtually stopped using Tescos' when some 14year old snooty kid on the 
Management trainees scheme  was having his week on Customer Service refused 
to exchange 5 razor blades.

I very rarely use Tesco, I hate the sodding place. I can go in felling 
wonderful and come out utterly depressed.
Morrisons petrol is anywhere between 1 to 3p cheaper and with the miles 
scheme you can add a further 1.4p to that.

Yes, where I live.

I have very few stations and have to queue nearly all the time to get petrol
except at about 10pm.
If I'm not waiting at traffic lights, I waiting at the garage!

Trust me, it works. Countless research and market tests have proved

Come on, that's a spurious argument. Which of two identical items would you buy,
if one were priced 8.99, and one were 8.95? At least a 5p coin is more useful
than a 1p coin. BTW M&S men's clothing use mostly round prices, e.g. 25, 30...

That's basic hygiene. You wouldn't expect a shop to replace underwear 
you had taken the tags off, why would you expect them to replace razor 
blades for you?

(Also I would have said to you "Instead of opening it you could have 
read the bit which says "Sensor" but not "Excel", but maybe that's just me.)

Indeed. IIRC All the petrol up here (irrespective of
brand/supermarket) comes from Stanlow via the Manchester Fuel
Terminal. The only difference being the additives/detergent blends
each company adds.

Didn't even know about it until I got given the voucher with my weekly
shop - thought "that's nice, but I'll check the prices".

Local Tesco - 90.9p per litre.
General price at most others in the area - 90.9p per litre.

So doesn't look like any kind of scam to me.

Jeeze man, maybe we came across the same guy when we asked for a 
resonable refund of some Tesco goods.  It was like getting blood 
out of a stone.  Never used to be like that.  What is the matter 
with Tesco.  If get that sort of greif again then I will shop 
where I don't need a barrister to present my case for a refund for 
defective goods.

ISTR that Tesco say they will exchange any product which the 
customer is not satisfied with.  Sure the poster should have known 
if some balded fitted or not but Tesco offers an unqualified 
refund based on satisfaction which they should have honoured.

But it could be said that satisfaction is relative to expectation.
If you buy the wrong product in the first place, then you can't expect
to be satisfied.

Well I took a Philips DVD recorder back the other week due to it going
faulty I bought it December last year and was given a full cash refund
no questions asked and no hassle at all .

Come to think of it, the '99' pricing is more likely to cost you money:

Suppose a trader calculates that his price should be, say 8.37.
However, since '99' pricing is the order of the day, he will have to chose
between 7.99 and 8.99. Surely, he will pick the 8.99. It will then look
like an accurate 'to the pence' price, whereas in reality it becomes more
akin to a rounded 'pound' price.

Much the same here - Tesco, JS and ASDA all 89.9p, with Tesco and JS
offering 5p off for 50 spend. Esso also 89.9p, most other garages
between 90.9 and 92.9p (all for unleaded)

Morrison's produce goes off faster than that from other supermarkets.  And
our Tescos certainly have a better range of products than our Morrisons
