      New call for abolition of monarchy timed to influence general election

      THE monarchy should be abolished and all parts of Britain should 
declare themselves republics in order to become true democracies.

      The call from leading writer and artist Alasdair Gray makes the 
controversial case for republicanism in a new political pamphlet called How 
We Should Rule Ourselves due to be published by Edinburgh-based Canongate in 
advance of this year's general election.

      The document, which has been co-written with Adam Tomkins, Professor 
of Public Law at the University of Glasgow, argues that the nations of the 
United Kingdom can only become truly democratic by axing the Queen and 
restoring power to the people through properly elected parliaments that are 
not answerable to the Crown.

      The pamphlet is set to reignite the monarchy debate especially as some 
states, including Australia, are reconsidering their membership of the 
commonwealth following revelations that after the forthcoming royal wedding 
Camilla Parker Bowles will technically become Queen upon Prince Charles's 
succession.

      Gray told the Sunday Herald: "The notion of having government by a 
royal family is ludicrous. The royal family are the least free human beings 
in Britain. It's practically impossible for them to act sanely."

      Although Gray has written pamphlets before, in 1992 and 1997 on the 
theme of Scottish independence, this is his first overtly republican tract.

      He was inspired to write it after hearing Tomkins speak at a 
demonstration on Calton Hill organised by the Scottish Socialist Party in 
protest at the Queen's opening of the new Scottish parliament in October 
2004.

      Gray e-mailed the academic two weeks after the event and they decided 
to get together to collaborate on this work. Tomkins, an Englishman living 
in Scotland, is a committed republican. He published a book earlier this 
year called Our Republican Constitution.

      "I was alarmed when Adam explained that the Prime Minister was able to 
use a power called royal prerogative to pass laws without discussing them 
with parliament or paying attention to widespread opinion, such as he did 
when going to war with Iraq," Gray explained.

      The pamphlet calls for the abolition of the royal prerogative and asks 
for parliamentary reform so that all MPs are democratically elected and able 
to operate freely without the constraints of party loyalty. Gray and Tomkins 
want the Crown and Queen removed, with the monarch's powers being 
transferred directly to the House of Commons.

      Gray said he preferred to write fiction than political comment but 
felt that it was his duty to do so, especially when facing a general 
election: "It's a way of letting off steam and I would feel dirty if I didn't.

      "I want anyone who thinks they should have some kind of influence on 
the way our country is governed to read and act on this pamphlet.

      "Everyone should complain about what they see as wrong with the 
country in which they live."

      Initially conceived as purely for Scotland, it was later decided that 
the pamphlet should address the whole of Britain.

      It states: "Most people living on these islands believe that the Crown 
and its powers are effectively controlled by elected parliaments and that, 
as a result, Britain may be called a democracy. This pamphlet aims to undo 
these illusions."

      It continues: "The starting principle for government power should be 
the same for British government as it already is for local authorities in 
England and for devolved government in Scotland and Wales: namely, that the 
government may exercise only those powers which are expressly conferred upon 
it by statute."

      Although he is unsure how soon a republic could be achieved, Gray 
hopes it will be sooner than later, but he doesn't see it happening without 
a struggle. "The present government would have to change hugely to 
accommodate a republic - Tony Blair sounds just like Margaret Thatcher - but 
I think it can and it should change," he said.

      As the first step on the road to proper self-determination, Gray and 
Tomkins are urging people to go out and vote in the forthcoming general 
election.

      "What we both feel is that people should vote for any MP in their own 
district that they believe is honest and independent minded," Gray said.

      Like Tomkins, Gray is not part of any political party, although he has 
supported the Scottish Nationalist Party in the past. He now plans to vote 
for the Scottish Socialist Party, who share his republican views.

      Tomkins said: "We want to bring these debates into the election 
campaign. While there has been some discussion in recent years of some 
aspects of constitutional reform in Britain, there are all sort of different 
aspects of our constitution such as royal prerogative, which aren't ever 
talked about seriously by political parties.

      "We endorse no one political party. Alasdair and I want independently 
minded politicians who will put their constituents first and their party 
second.

      "Although I certainly want England to be a republic, it's not for me 
to say to the Scots that they should be a republic, but I think I should say 
to them that they should think about it."

      TC Smout, Historiographer Royal in Scotland and an expert on the 
constitution, dismissed the view that dispensing with the monarchy will make 
politicians more accountable.

      He said: "I think this is a terrible idea. I simply don't see a 
mechanism by which abolishing the monarchy can improve democracy.

      "If we had proportional representation in the general election, then 
we would start improving democracy.

      "Countries like Denmark and the Netherlands, who have different 
representation systems, are arguably more democratic and they also happen to 
be monarchist. So what's the big deal?"

      OUR CRIMINAL CROWN - QUEEN ELIZABETH II

      Queen Elizabeth II is  a criminal by her part in the Judicial Oath 
fraud. All UK judges and magistrates swear their Judicial  Oath of Fairness 
to all manner of people only to Queen Elizabeth II. That Oath is a fraud of 
massive proportions. I have written to Queen Elizabeth II three times in the 
last four years. Only one of my letters to Queen Elizabeth II has received a 
reply. The documentary evidence showing that Queen Elizabeth II is a 
criminal by virtue of her integral part in the Judicial Oath fraud is very 
substantial. The UK has indeed a criminal Queen. The Judicial Oath fraud 
amounts to a royal tyranny being carried out against the UK public.

      Queen Elizabeth II has been served with my eighteen million pounds 
damages claim for her part in the Judicial Oath fraud. She was informed of 
the murder attempts that were made on me at my home at 16A The Lyons, 
Hetton-le-Hole, Tyne-Wear by the Northumbria Police Special Squad who had 
surrounded my home and were than accessories to its theft. Prime Minister 
Tony Blair and then Home Secretary David Blunkett were also informed of the 
murder attempts that were made on me in early February of 2003. These three 
persons  have simply ignored this matter which is itself a further criminal 
act that has been carried out by them. The first attempt by Northumbria 
Police Special Squad to murder me at my home at Hetton-le-Hole was by 
shooting me. Northumbria Police marksmen had stationed themselves outside of 
my home on the first night of their illegal siege of it. I came very close 
to having been shot by them but was saved from that fate when a policewoman 
negotiator named to me as "Jo" gave me warning to stay away from my kitchen 
window when I said that I would pass some documents through my kitchen 
window to her. On the third night of their siege two of the Northumbria 
Police Special Squad officers attempted to impale me on a sword that had 
previously decorated my home. I was saved from that fate by one of the 
Special Squad who dragged me down the stairs away from his would be 
murdering colleagues. Needless to write here Northumbria Police at 
Washington, Tyne-Wear were also given an account of their forces attempts to 
murder me but like the other criminals mentioned above have simply ignored

      How has Queen Elizabeth II been able to become one of the wealthiest 
women in the world? She is now a multi-billionaire and that wealth did not 
just materialise out of thin air. Most of it came from the pockets of the UK 
public. Maybe the answer to this is because all UK Members of Parliament 
only swear their Oath of Allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II and not to the UK 
public. Is it that allegiance which closes their mouths in asking questions 
about such vast Royal wealth, the Royal Prerogative which is against 
International law, and her part in the massive Judicial Oath fraud?

      Nothumbria Police have carried out a catalogue of serious crimes 
against me especially since I contributed to the House of Commons Home 
Affairs Select Committee Inquiry into Freemasonry within the Police and 
Judiciary chaired by Lord Nolan. That Inquiry was an establishment cover-up 
if ever there was one. It is now quite certain that UK establishment 
criminals such as those who have carried out substantial and serious crimes 
against me are being protected by the Royal Prerogative where it appears 
that Queen Elizabeth II believes herself and all those who act under her 
authority to be immune from prosecution for crime. Their defence for crime 
hiding beneath the Royal Prerogative is indefensible under International 
law. The not so United Kingdom is not the democracy which it claims to be 
but the substituted word hypocrisy is more appropriate here.

      Prime Minister Tony Blair is a 33 degree Freemason. Queen Elizabeth II 
is Patron Head of all UK Freemasonry. Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales are 
also Freemasons. Queen Elizabeth's cousin, the Duke of Kent, is Grand Master 
of all UK Freemasonry. Queen Elizabeth's late father King Gerge 6th was also 
a Freemason. The Royal Family have been involved with Freemasonry for 
generations. It is now very clear that Freemasonry is protecting the UK 
Monarchy and in turn the UK Monarchy is protecting Freemasonry. Freemasonry 
is a very Secret Society.

      All UK Members of Parliament swear their Oath of Allegiance only to 
Queen Elizabeth II and not the UK general public. This is the sad state of a 
country which falsely claims that it is a democracy. In passing, my own 
Conservative Member of Parliament was supplied with copies of my forty plus 
pages of letters that were sent to 10 Downing Street, London to Blair. They 
gave accounts of the substantial establishment crimes that have and continue 
to be used against me. His Secretary wrote to me that my MP had read them 
had decided not to take any action on them. He holds the title Rt. 
Honourable but that title is the fraud that he also is as is the person who 
gave it to him.

      I was at Calton Hill in Edinburgh when Queen Elizabeth II opened the 
new Scottish Parliament. I then signed the declaration for a Scottish 
Republic. I am glad that people are beginning to wake up to the facts of 
what is the Great British Hypocrisy.

      The UK police, courts and other similar establishment authorities only 
exist under the authority of Queen Elizabeth II who is herself a criminal by 
virtue of her integral part in the massive Judicial Oath fraud. There are 
very facts arising from this under the European Human Rights Convention.

      It may be of interest to the reader that William Hamilton, the mass 
Dunblane child murderer, was also a Freemason. He was also a known 
paedophile who was being clearly protected by the police. I give my sincere 
thanks to my friend and colleague Tom Minogue who carried out what I believe 
to have been a truly independent inquiry into the Dunblaine Massacre. The 
Lord Cullen job was as bent as a dogs hind leg. It is said that Cullen is a 
member of the Speculative Society and  probably also a Freemason.

      I write this in memory of Andy McCardle who was murdered at Carstairs 
State Hospital in Scotland on Boxing Day last. I and a colleague 
photographed his body shortly before his burial. His lips had been glued 
together, his jaw had clearly been broken and I saw bruising on top of his 
head. It was at first claimed, falsely in the circumstances, that Andy had 
died from a stroke.It is shown and proved that Andy had been unlawfully 
detained at Carstairs State Hospital (Prison) for two years prior to his 
murder there.
