Depends on whether it goes to/from beyond Basingstoke. If only to/from
Basingstoke they are electric and seem to be 450s now.
If going on to, say, Reading, they use diesels, which mostly seem to be
170s.

Likely to be a 450 if its going to Basingstoke or a 170 if its Reading.
Only once seen a 159 at Fareham.

Re: SWT Eastleigh - Brighton
I've got the very last service of the day from Brighton at Fareham in
June and this was formed of a 3 coach 159, so they do run the services,
how often and what diagrams I do not know.

Forget to add this service continued to Salisbury, not Eastleigh or
anywhere further North.

159s at Fareham this afternoon in both directions on the Reading Brighton
service - I wonder if they are only diagrammed on Sundays, when presumably
the Salisbury-Waterloo services are not as busy as weekdays?

According to the current Southern CWN that covers all TOC trains at
Brighton, at least the 10:10 and 16:10 to Reading and their
corresponding inbound trains are booked for 159s.
I am not sure if it is the same diagram - as it is a SN notice so
simply says SWT without number, but it looks likely, starts at
Portsmoiuth, two return trips Brighton reading, ends at Portsmouth.
I meant to post this answer when the question was first raised,
overlooked doing so.

Generally there is no Brighton to Reading Winchester Service on Sundays.
The paths are taken by extra Wessex trains services to Bristol and a
couple of SWT services to / from the West Country/ Salisbury. Generally
the SWT trains on Sundays and the through service on Saturday are formed
of 159 (sometimes in pairs).
Today the line between Fareham and Southampton was closed for engineering
works. The Wessex trains were diverted via Eastleigh and the SWT services
were diverted to Reading. At Havant tonight I saw a 159 on one service and
a 159/170 combo on another.

You've lost me there, or do you mean because of engineering work ?
There are 4 trains each way Reading Brighton at 3 hour intervals in the
advertised timetable.

I suspect that the trains missing from the Sunday timetable are the
Brighton - Basingstoke 450s, and it is these paths that have extra Wessex
158s in them?

Yep Sorry,
what I meant to say was that instead of an hourly service
the paths are used as follows (ex Brighton);
07,08,09 (15) Southern limited stop to portsmouth
10.10 SWT Reading
11.10 Wessex Cardiff
13.10 SWT Reading
14.10 SWT Exeter
15.47 Wessex Cardiff
16.10 SWT Reading
17.47 Wessex cardiff
18.10 SWT Exeter
19.10 SWT Reading
The Exeter services in my experience are always 159s, the stock for the
10.10 and 16.10 form an early limited stop service from Portsmouth Harbour
and have always been 159 when Ive seen them.
