VW Bora wont go into gear
Hi
a friend of mine has a Bora 2.0 petrol saloon which is 3 years old next
month, he was driving and it would not come out of gear when he pressed the
clutch, the a breakdown service came out and said "it sounds like the clutch
has gone" they then towed the car to his home.
Vw dealer tell him it will cost 300 to strip it down and find the problem,
if its wear and tear he will have to pay 300 plus the repair, if its a
mechanical fault it will be done free under the 3 yr warranty.
Is there anything we can check ourselves?

the clutch pedal is still firm,
when the engine is not funning any gear can be selected, when it is running
no gear can be selected,
its as if the clutch is not pressed.
Regards
Andrew

From your description (that the pedal feels normal) it sounds as though the
clutch plate has broken up, this effectively makes the plate thicker and the
pressure cannot be relieved by pressing the pedal down. The answer is a new
clutch.

A clutch repair centre would give a better price for the job, but it sounds
to me as though this should be covered by your guarantee, unless they say
that clutch disintegration is wear and tear !!!!

The time given for changing the clutch is 3.3 hours, so 300 quid is about
right at a main dealer. Average clutch place would charge about half that
plus the cost of the clutch kit.
