All in one Laser printer/scanner/fax/copier
Can anyone recommend a decent all in one laser
printer/scanner/fax/copier? I've been recommended getting Dell, but
wanted to know if there are better/cheaper units out there (preferably
with colour)? I've got a budget of around £500.
Manny thanks.

Forgive me stating the obvious, but do cost the price of consumables, won't
you?
On the whole, the cheaper the printer the more you'll pay for, for example,
toner refills and replacement laser drums. Furthermore, that calculation
is complicated by the fact that different machines will print vastly
different numbers of pages before needing a refill. I found
http://www.dabs.com/uk useful in that the machine specs often gave an idea
how many pages each refill would print. From this I calculated the total
cost of each machine over three years, based on my average paper
consumption.
It's also worth looking at whether one machine or two is best, if you have
the space for more than one. Three years ago I found it much cheaper
overall to settle for an inkjet all-in-one (from Hewlett Packard) plus a
Panasonic b/w laser printer for really good quality text. Admittedly
technology and prices have changed, and I probably wouldn't make the same
choice again as I print more photographs. As always the starting point is
to decide what you expect to do with the machine.
Hope that helps,
Barbara

I've just ordered an HP Colour Laserjet 2840 - has all of the above
features and is networked (can print and scan over the network, etc.).
Slightly over your budget though at £624 inc delivery from Misco.

I recently ordered this HP, and surprisingly, I found it cheaper from HP
Direct!

Yep, looked there but it was a good £50 more at least. Among the
cheaper retailers for this product are currently Misco, Savastore and
Technoworld.
How do you find the machine? Looks ideal for me, read a couple of
reports saying it's comparitively slow and noisy but the flashy
features make up for that for me. :)
