Sandite/Departmental Class 303?
Hi all,
Do any of you knowledgable people out there happen to know anything
about a withdrawn class 303/311 that was converted into a departmental
unit (possibly a Sandite machine?) some years ago?
If this did exist, and I'm not imagining things, I'd be interested to
know anything about it - former number, what it became, where it was
allocated, when it was withdrawn/scrapped etc. I know I'm asking a
lot, but I'd be very grateful for any information on this.

Matt

Set 303049 was withdrawn from normal use in Feb 1991 and was renumbered
303999. The individual vehicles were also renumbered 75759 -> 977711,
61825 -> 977712 and 75815 -> 977713. Date of renumberings unknown.
Allocation as departmental assumed to be Glasgow Shields Road, date
withdrawn unknown. Vehivles scrapped by M.C.Metal in July 1996

311103 became 936108 and I believe is at Summerlee Heritage Museum in
Coatbridge, Glasgow.

IIRC, 311103 and 311104 were also converted to sandite units too, vats
and pumping equipment were fitted to the driving cars of the units and
operated by push buttons in the driving cab, by the Driver. AAUI, one of
the units (103 I think) was preserved at Summerlee Heritage Centre in
Coatbridge.
