OT: Which backup program do you use?
I just bought a 2nd hard drive or mirror my primary drive.
I'm looking for a recommendation of a program that allows:
+ automated scheduled backup
+ non-proprietary backup format (zip or even non-compressed)
+ incremental backup (that uses a single structure to add to)
+ is not too expensive
Any recommendations please?
Thanks

Cobian backup is the best - and its free!
http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm
Been using it for months and it just sits there as a service, doing its job
properly with no interruption.

Re: Which backup program do you use?
YEH! I completely agree with you.
I've been using True Image
(http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage) for a long
time, I must say that it's the easiest backup solution I've ever seen:
I just create an image of my HDD and I keep this image on my PC in
secured (provide by Acronis) and another copy on the several CD-RW
disks (but it allows use non-compressed image). Also I do incremental
backup every day using built-in task sheduler, and once a month I
remake full backup. Before it I copy previous image with all
incremental backups on DVD.
So, I guess it's completely satisfy your requirement, True Image is
cheaper then some other soft of this type. And you can try free trial
version before buy.

I have been using Handy Backup for the past few months without any
problems - it can do full & incremental backups to my DVD-RAM drive.

And Ghost to back up partitions/hard drives.

As the name suggests, it is very flexible.
Seems well written and reliable too.
There is a free trial.

The following is a copy of my response to Solei's post, which was, now I
discovered, all over the place! The recommendations here are worthy of
note, and deserve a wider recognition.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I use DrvImagerXP. When I downloaded the software in October, 2003, there
had been 4 700 downloads recorded. Today, the number is 47 800 (I just
checked). It has served me magnificently, being solidly reliable, without
one single incidence of misbehaviour. The only downside is it needs .NET
Framework to run on in a separate partition (I don't use that otherwise).
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/DrvImagerXP.shtml
But the best part about it is, it's completely free. Oh...there is no help
from the author (The programme is so simple, you don't need it); he has
turned to do something else!
For automatic, scheduled nightly backup of My Documents and Favourites, I
use Replicator [which has an incremental option]:
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp
Again, another solidly reliable free software. Thoroughly worthy of the
highest praise, as is the above gem.
These may not be as sophisticated as the one suggested but they serve the
purpose. I can recommend these two to those on tight budget.

Acronis backup software. This program fully satisfies your
requirements. You may be certain that it's true by looking here:

On my behalf I can add that I've been using this program for a year now
and it has never let me down.

You do realise that 'mirroring' is not actually a proper backup? What are
you going to do if the second hard drive fails?

it is and it's not, depends how you think of a backup.
It's certainly a proper backup but it's still inside the PC, if the PC
bursts into flames your backups gone.
Also you need to make sure your system tells you of any errors rather
than reverting to the mirror without telling you otherwise you can get
to the situation where you are using the backup as the active disk and
it it dies your stuffed

There is a risk that what ever backup media you use it could fail when you
need it, tape, CDR, CDRW, hard disk, etc.

Mirroring is a terrible thing to rely on - if the file gets deleted or
corrupted on the main hard drive, then the same thing happens to version on
the mirror.

But with tapes and CDR's, you are going to have a backlog of them to rely
on - you are only going to have the one hard disk.

But you will still lose data if you have to have to resort to one other than

If it's deleted sure, but as long as corruption only happens on the
hard isk you'll get away with it,
As you said I certainly would not use it as a backup, but it is an
option

I use second copy 2000 and mirror to a hard drive on another computer on my
network.
When my Laptop hard drive died, all I had to do was copy the data from my
network server to another laptop. Works well for me.

Thanks a million Lin for highlighting that gem!
I travel about a fair bit with a laptop, and intermittently connect up
with an office network to store the updates of work i've done on the
laptop. Occasionally, I also backup the laptop to a USB memory stick,
particulary before taking the machine off-site (where anything like
theft or breakages can happen). Replicator is damm useful in making all
these actions a one-click process for replication on demand, and a whole
lot better than repeatedly dragging files all over the desktop to keep
backups current. 10/10!
