Recommended DVD-R from SVP?
Sometime back Datawrite Classis DVD-R Grey-Top was recommend by quite a few
people here. And I've been very happy with the disc for months now. But
went to order from SVP, and its not there anymore! arghh!
I've looked, but I can't find an obvious replacement. Is there a new
recommendation, or hopefully maybe the same disc is out there with a
different sticker?
Thanks

Never had a problem with
{DV 3250} Datasafe (8x) DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 50
and they've been in a fair few DVD Players.

We still sell the greys (They are still a good disc they use a slightly
different version of the dye these days)
{DV 3257} Datawrite Grey F01 (8x) DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 100. 20p
per disc at time of writing this.
You will find them here:

I'd go for the Ritek G05 based discs. Datawrite Light Blues or the Ritek
Xtreme's
In my experience the Prodisc F01 dye on the Greys is not very good (esp
compared to the old FUJIFILM one).

I'd second that. Ritek went away from the G series to the M series, but
quickly re-introduced the G05's due to demand. The Xtremes are just
excellent.
They are the best disks Ive ever used (and Ive pretty much tried them all),
although they arent 16x if its speed you require.

I'm on my second tub of 50 RiDisc 8x DVD-Rs - they seem to just work for me
in a NEC 3520a burner.

Thanks Lordy. I've found the Xtreme disc on SVP, but the naming of the
discs I'm a bit confused on. On SVP its called "Ridisc Xtreme" rather than
Ritek. Is it the same thing? It mentions it's Ritek G05 dye - is that the
main thing I should be aware of, rather the brand name?
Cheers to everyone who replied also. Much appreciated.

Riek is the dye. RiDisc is the manufacturer.

Yup. There are variances but any discs with the G05 dye is a good bet.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of pcs with 16 speed drives can
actually sustain that data rate without Burn Proof etc kicking in and
introducing more errors on the disk (that has to be corrected on playback)
and slowing down overall burn times significantly.
My system is no slouch but I still see the LED's flicker at 8 speed on
occasion. (Maybe time to revisit my IDE setup. Esp now I have a SATA HD.)

Except (IMO Bulkpaq) which seem to have a low build quality? I had some
Bulkpaqs with FUJI dye and they were not very good. More errors running
Kprobe etc.

Yes sorry RiDisc Xtreme with the Ritek G05 dye.
Avoid (IMO again) the Titanium range. Not bad but not great either. That
just looks like marketing hype to me.
RiDisc Extreme or Datawrite Light Blues are my flavour of the month!

I've just finished a 50 pack of Titanium's in a Pioneer 109.
No coasters at all.

I'm not talking about coasters but the qualilty of the burn. Ie the number
of error's laid down on the disc that have to be corrected by the playback
device. This affects compatibility to some extent and also quite likely
longevity. For me Titaniums gave more errors than G05 based discs.
The Titaniums were still respectable but for the money the G05 discs were
better.
Coasters are very rare for any discs sold by SVP!

I got one of SVP's 16x LG DVD writers at just under 30.
This evening, I copied (as a safety backup measure) a highly protected
DVD movie, using a blank 8x very cheap unbranded DVD-R.
It took under 15 minutes for a 2 hour movie.
Just finished watching the copy. Perfect.
I am quite happy with the 16x drive and the cheap 8x DVD-Rs.

I was a tester for Titanium when the yellows came out. 45 with a near
perfect burn graph and 5 coasters.

What has "highly protected" got to do with burn speed? Any protection would
be removed in the ripping stage surely.

Its amazing how cheap they are these days!! Just got a Nec 3540 and it was
half the price I remember spending on my DVD-ROM/CDR combo!

How long was the actual burn time. It me takes 15 minutes to burn a 4.4G
ISO at FOUR speed! 8speed burns take about 8-9 minutes. Nec 2510
I bet for most people 8speed burns are as fast as 16 :)

No idea, but like you , if they did, that would be one G05 disc I wouldn't
bother with! I just mentioned them to make the point that dye isnt
everything but I do agree with your statement. It's nice on this fence :)

Cheers Lordy. Much appreciated. They both look pretty snazzy too, makes a
change from the drab grey datawrites I've been using. :)

Ripping?
I said I copied the DVD.
The copying process affects the total time taken.

I didn't time the burning bit, but am sure that it was well under 10
minutes.
Many many many times faster that copying videos in the old days!

Assume I am dense and explain it for me. How does the DVD being "highly
protected" alter burning speed. Unless you are timing the reading (ripping)
of the DVD to hard disk and then the burning. Not that we were talking
about reading speeds of drives.
