Camera Phone
Need some advice and help.
I needed a good camera phone to give to my sister as she needs it for her
work.
Any good phones you can recommend that I can pickup cheaply?
Any PAYG deals which have a camera phone?
Really appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure about payg if you want the latest high quality ones. I think
the new sony/ericcson W800 is out today which has got a 2mp camera, it's
on offer at various places like carphone warehouse (www.cpw.co.uk) and
the link (www.thelink.co.uk) that's on contract, might be some time
until it comes out on payg. Not the cheapest option but you could also
consider getting it sim free and using her existing sim card.
A bit cheaper is the 6230i which has got a 1.3mp camera, again, I'm not
sure which places will have that on payg yet, I'd definatly try checking
out the carphone warehouse's website though as they have got an online
comparison thingy.

Surely if she needs it for her work, her work should be paying for it?

The 3220 from Orange online isn't too bad. Don't know the megapixelage of it
but the phots are useable. Depends exactly what your sister does for work.
Detailed images will need a good camera whereas general snapping won't.
Why not get her a small digital camera instead - the 4.0 megapixel Minolta
G400 is nice and small although it uses a proprietry battery rather than
AA's. Look for optical zoom rather than digital.

If the needs a good one, that would suggest that she has a business need
to take pictures? In which case there is only one choice really, the
SonyEricsson K750i.
You will struggle to find this phone cheaply though, as it's a top class
bit of kit.

With respect, no they are not useable for anything other thanMMS
pictures. Also, getting the photos off the device will require some
additional hardware.

There's no such thing as a "good camera phone". Low resolution and shite in
all but bright light ... and a pain to transfer the pictures.
Why not just buy her a half decent camera ?

Have you tried any of the latest "camera phone" models?
I used my K750 almost exclusively during my holiday this year and the
pictures were certainly not "low resolution". Sure, you wont get as good as
a 5Mpixel camera with optical zoom, but they are definitaly good enough for
day-to-day usage. I was showing them on a TV screen and the quality was fine
at usual viewing distance.
As for transferring the pictures - how is it any harder to transfer
pictures than with a 'normal' digital camera? I can either pull out the
memory card and stick it in a card reader, or connnect to the phone direct
via USB. This is exactly the same as I would do with my Minolta digital
SLR.....
I will partly agree with you insofar that there do not seem to be any
camera phones that can handle really low light conditions yet (although
indoor lighting and very cloudy/dusk conditions do not seem to be a problem
for the better models any more)

He was asking advice on buying a mobile, I don't think he needs or wants to
give personal information regarding his life or that of his sister's. It is
possible to answer his request without such information, such details are
irrelevant. I'm guessing now that Big Brother has finished you need
something to fill the void in your life but why not try something else, eh?

Camera phones aren't very good for taking pictures yet - get a proper
camera

It's still not really all that great considering how much they charge for
the handsets SIM free; printing them would show the true faults.
A proper digital camera is a great investment; I bought a 7.2megapixel sony
DSC-P200 which is way over the top for basic holiday photos, but if you're
going to print them (in asda/jessops really cheaply, about 5p a normal-size
snap photo) then it's worth it.

Well, I guess "not really all that great" and "good camera phone" are
pretty vague terms. I'm certainly not going to compare camera phones to a
'proper' 7.2 Mpixel camera.
I was reacting to the phrases "Low Resolution", "shite in all but bright
light" and "pain to transfer the pictures". None of them are really true for
the better phone cameras.
The first is obviously relative, but 2Mpixel phone cameras are probably
good enough for most people most of the time (and yes, I have used a
'proper' digital camera too, so I know the differences)
The second is an exaggeration, although it contains a small kernel of truth
The third is just plain ridiculous, at least in my experience
The real bonus for me on holiday was that I already had my phone with me
anyway. My digital SLR got left back at the hotel most of the time, just
took it with me if I knew I would be taking a lot of photos (especially
landscape shots) and if I felt the extra bulk would not be an issue
