Cumbrian Photos
Thought some of you would be interested on a route I did in the past 2
weeks on a 10 mile route round Coniston Old Man (Lake District).
Using the details from my Garmin Legend I've plotted the route on a
Satellite Google Map (link below), as the route is plotted on the map
small photos appear of the trip - also displayed is total distance
covered, altitude, speed, time so an idea of the terain can be gained.
Coniston Old Man cache hunt -

I was out morris dancing at Ennerdale Bridge. (Anyone remember the boink we
held there?) It tried to rain and the midges came out. Good fun despite

We were famished and stopped for a meal at Pooley Bridge Hotel. Gees that's
a nice old place with good food-and they placed us in what I'd call lovers
corner, beautiful, a small room opening off from the main salong and with
stained glass windows, just enough room for one table. It was just something
special. We felt like royalty, didn't have to wait long for the meal either
altho' it was packed, efficient waitresses, attractive too, had to keep a
sharp eye on Orly.

Never saw the bridge. Ennerdale Bridge is the name of the village. I suppose
there's a bridge somewhere. We danced outside the Shepherd's Arms (where
that boink was held - whatever happened to that lot? - Barry - Angela -
Tony.... ) and the management gave us chips. We like dancing there.
I think the bridge is monopolised by midges. We keep away from water on
summer evenings if we can.

Ah. This is a *future* ash-scattering site. I see. Lovely spot for it! (Did
you mention this before? Memory like a seive here...)
We scattered my late husband's ashes in the River Tay near Kinloch Rannoch,
because he was working up there in the hills at the time and loved the
place. Unfortunately it was a windy day, and half the stuff came blowing
back in our faces as I stood there in the river. He always liked to get the
last laugh.... ;-)

Orly and I crossed your bridge on our way back to Tallentire. We were so
surprized to see the sign for Workington just around the corner from where
you live. EH?
Are you planning to kick the bucket soon Sanchez? Will there be cakes and
tea in your parlour? Can I have your dog-and the number of your account in
Switzerland please.
I asked nicely.

Wrong bridge, dear.... I see you took the scenic route though... The bridge
is off the main road turning off at the Wath Brow/Cleator Moor crossroad (I
worked my way through my first year at college in the wee garage on the
corner changing tyres by hand - well, with bleddy gurt levers. No machines
there)!!
But yes, as my DIL and grandson live in Millom I use that route often and
I'd never noticed the sign until a coupla weeks after you left. There it was
in letters 6 inches high! Wukkin'ton. Before the by-pass the direction signs
would have you go through Lindal, past Ulverston and turning through
Greenodd - unless you came from Barrow - though in them days from our
cottage you'd turn left at the top of the close and just keep going....

Not planning on it, no - but living on borrowed time and now fully expect to
live to be 120 and then get shot by a jealous husband. I'm a radioactive cat
with 18 half-lives. After being told I wouldn't walk again at 18 and then
proving them all wrong the docs were still convinced I wouldn't see past my
mid-30's - so, as you can see, the medical 'professionals' know
diddley-squat.
Even though you asked nicely I wouldn't have a clue about tea and cakes.
Within hours Kai Hsia would have cleared out the bank accounts, shot the
dog, dumped me ashes in the wheelie bin, and be flying Emirates Business
Class back to Singapore with a toy boy.....
She doesn't know I know, you know.....

This probably won't be a popular topic but I was reading an article which
touched me deeply. It was about something I'd once given some thought to and
since my bad turn of events in the health department and sudden death of my
auntie I'd started to give it some more thought. OK, the first priority was
to make sure my Will was up-to-date and all in order and then get all legal
documents, insurance policies, bank books, leases, whatever, all together in
a fireproof safe. My auntie left her papers scattered all over and her flat
couldn' be cleared for ages as every drawer, cupboard, floorboard, had to be
checked as papers were turning up in the strangest places. You would not
believe how much money had been found hidden away in strange places. The
next tenants might still be in for a treat or two!! Anyway, I got home after
the funeral, sorted my stuff out and made sure the family knows where to
find anything - just in case...
Anyway, back to this article. It was about how people always made
arrangements such as a Will and it's executors, various bequests, mode of
funeral, but not much thought seems to be given to the exact content of the
funeral. I have been to so many that had obviously been left to the funeral
home and clergy and this often did not reflect the personality of the
deceased at all. So I began to plan mine, albeit roughly... not that it
should bother me too much if things didn't go to plan (but I'd like to think
that I'd be there to see who actually turned up!!)
Well, I'd already settled on a cremation many years ago. Being a bit of a
'greenie' (though not much of one as you'll see) it seemed to be the most
environmentally friendly way to be dealt with, as well as ensuring that if
I'm not quite dead I soon will be. The chances of the cremation being
allowed to take place in my backyard are pretty slim so I'll settle for a
crematorium. Now I don't care who comes but I'd like to see all my drinking
buddies there. And no one is to wear black, apart from leather. I've always
hated reds and yellows so I think an abundance of this would be good. I'd
actually be turning my back on this monstrosity of colour for good so lets
fill the crem with it. So, if you're a traditionalist and prefer black,
it'll have to be leather. Motorcycles. Now motorcycles would be good. Let's
get a few. Put the word around - free drink and grub - just make lots of
noise.
Now no prayers please. They would mean nothing to many of those there. Let's
have some amusing anecdotes about my philosophies on life. There are loads
of those. I've written them all down in a large folder, in my box. Share
them out. Whoever fancies a read can do. And no hymns. A good rock anthem
might be the thing. I'm a bit stuck here. I thought of Freddie Mercury's
'Who Wants to Live Forever' but that's gonna get the tears falling. I don't
want tears. This has to be a happy event. L7's 'Pretend We're Dead' comes
next but doesn't quite hit the mark. So we'll settle for Eric Idle and
'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' with everybody in on the chorus.
Actually, chuck that one in at the end... At the start how about Joe
Satriani's 'Always With Me - Always With You'... extended version. Right,
that's that then. Flippin' 'eck... that wasn't as easy as I'd thought.
Better cancel the Desert Island Disks interview for now.
Flowers? OK. Roses.... lots!! Put them on top of the coffin and make sure
that they burn with me. I don't want a single one to be sent to the
hospital, hospice or wherever. If that's not possible then donations to my
darling angel Laurie Jean's Memorial Fund, or to the Dog's Home on Walney
Island, Cumbria. I'm serious... and passionate about both.
Afterwards we go to the Cavendish Arms at Dalton where, after a fill of
vol-au-vents (there are never enough vol-au-vents at funeral meets) and
chicken drumsticks everyone must get rat-faced on Irish Whiskey, on me of
course... Lot's of singing (I'm sure if Ian and Donna are still around the
juke box will be free), dancing and 'No Fighting, Andrew....' I taught you
to curb your temper to the amazement of all who knew you, and without
incurring a bust lip, you repaid me by being one of the nicest guys anyone
could hope to know. Oh, while I'm at it Andrew, you stay off the whiskey.
Just stick to cider. You know what I mean!! ;o) Anyway, the wake will last
about three days, which is the usual length of a Cavendish 'lock-in' and
then you can all go home.
There will be no internment. My ashes are to be scattered on Ennerdale Water
(make sure the wind's in the right direction - we don't want another
unfortunate incident like my cousin Debbie's with her father - more of him
ended up in the Laundromat than on the Fylde). Ennerdale is, to me, the most
beautiful and tranquil lake in the Lake District. I spent many hours there
bunking off college, getting my head together, shaking off the bad sh*t in
my life and planning my life - badly... Geez, what good were plans? They all
went to rat-pooh! But I was always happiest there as a screwed up teen. Us
bikers would take off there every summer, up to the pumping station, over
the fence and diving in fully clothed for our annual communal bath finished
off with an overnight 'Blues' party with lots of drugs, drink and
debauchery.... One teensy problem. Ennerdale is a reservoir for public
drinking water. I trust the filtration system is fairly adequate. Kai Hsia
has the plans for the most discreet spot, Forestry Wardens permitting....
We've worked out how to hide the chara - and soon there'll be a little bit
of Kezzi in everyone. Nothing much changed there then... Well, everyone
North of Manchester that is, for a change...
Ha!! I just read the above and it's daft, irreverent, crap. Something near
would be wonderful - or maybe I'll just give my body up to medical science
instead. No funeral, nothing... Well, maybe we'll still go with the
vol-au-vents...
Signed this day,
Kezzi. . .
..... who fully intends to live to 120 and get shot on the job by a jealous
husband. Mind you, a shooting could be problematic. I'm not superstitious
but I'd like as much of me to make it to the crem as possible. Point that
weapon carefully. Shoot me in the thigh.... I'll crawl off and bleed to
death somewhere....

What's 'green' about getting cremated? Think of the fuel used, and all
those pollutants! Even if they put you on a burning raft and sent it down
the Lune, or wherever, you would still be spewing out a wee bit of
pollution.
I thought all the 'greenie' types got themselves buried in biodegradeable
coffins so they would return to the mother earth - in compost form!
- Or you could also submit yourself for medical research (if that sort of
thing is still allowed).

Depends if that fuel is fossil derived or not. A nice big bonfire is
green as the carbon released will have been absorbed from the
atmosphere in the last 50 years or so not 50 million years ago(*).

There could be problems with any Mercury amalgam fillings and I have a
feeling that unless you burn a body hot enough it does produce some
rather toxic chemicals.
Maybe some one ought to build a wood gas or chicken shit methane
powered crematorium?
(*) Or however many million years ago the gas/oil/coal was laid down.

It's gas at the moment.., and the heat required by a nice big bonfire would
require lots of fuel to consume the body - look at the recent foot'n'mouth
debacle. Smoke billowing everywhere. Could make a party out of it,
though; - stick taties in round the fire to eat at the 'do'.

I think one is requested to have rid off all hearing-aids ans pacemakers
before going through those sliding curtains.

No doubt it'll come. Patent office, anyone?
