on-line DVD rental companies
I know this has been raised long time ago, but what's the verdict on who's
got the widest selection & provides best service? Thinking of signing up
for one. Amazon any good? - feel as though they should be
trustworthy/reliable but users' experiences would be helpful.
Thanks.

I have found Tesco to be very good so far for the week I have been with them.
Extremely fast turnaround and a large selection. Had 8 DVDs within 1 week
wonder if this will be kept up??
See http://www.bextech.me.uk/tescodvd (Affiliate link on the web page).
Use the voucher code: 1316434 and get 21 days free trial instead of 14, and
with that voucher code you get 1,000 club card points after 3 months paid
service.

Amazon have a great choice but they do not offer an unlimited service so are
pricey if that is what you are after.

IIRC, Tesco outsource the handling of their service to screenselect.co.uk.
I'm currently on a trial directly with screenselect (5 DVDs, 21 days) but
I intend to go with easycinema (who also outsource to screenselect!) as
they charge 1.99 per rental, rather than a monthly subscription (I'm
rather erratic in my viewing habits, so I'm not sure a subscription would
work out for me). Primarily, I'm interested in having a wider choice than
at my local independent rental shop; screenselect seem to be doing pretty
well so far.
Best Regards,
Alex.

Re: on-line DVD rental companies
I just cancelled screenselect because they seem to be having some serious
problems with supply.
When I first joined up I could send a disc back say on Monday, it would show
as returned Tuesday and the next lot on my list was sent Tuesday, it now
seems to take several days to either.

....another reason to go with easycinema's 1.99 per rental.
That said, screenselect seem to have been OK for me so far; they're
sending replacements out the next working day to the day they receive my
returns. I have read, though, that they throttle users they designate as
'heavy' once the trial period is over. Without the facts, though, it's
impossible to state for certain that this is the case.

Screenselect are ok for the first month but they ten to go downhill for a
while, but I am told it gets better after 4-5 months.
I found that in my second month I got very few films, was on 3 dvd's and
was lucky to get one changed in less than 7 days. I left them for that
reason, but have since been told about a scoring system their computers use
based on membership length, popularity of films you want and how often you
try to change them.

I've been with a few so far. The worst was Lovefilm, the best was Movietrak,
which has just been taken over by Screenselect. The service seems OK so far,
but I can't comment on them long term obviously.
Don't make the mistake of judging by the trail period as far as turnaround
goes. They seem to give an extra effort to get the newest disks out to
people on the trial subscriptions as fast as possible, while the existing
customers seem to have their choices picked from whatever is available after
that.

Re: on-line DVD rental companies
I have tested most of them.
Lovefilm was very poor, and the last one I used was Screenselect, which was
good overall. Sometimes, they don't seem to send a DVD straight away, or
they say they've sent one and it is not received the following day, but all
the companies seem to do those tricks...

Yes thanks!
I work nights, so am able to watch them not long after I get home, and then
post them straight back.

IMO the entire business model is only worthwhile for a few types of
customer..
1. DVD Pirates (copies them and posts them back out again almost
immediately)
2. Film fan who loves watching DVD films many times a week.
Otherwise people should find a cheap independent local shop. (ie not
Blockbusters etc who charge way too much). One near me does 3 DVDs for 6
GBP. Overnight only but that's where my NEC comes in handy...

The reason I signed up was initially because it was better not to spend
35ish on a Sky subscription with movies and instead go for the General
Entertainment package @ 19 / month and take out a DVD rental subscription
instead. This is better as I get to watch the films that I choose.
The other reason was that so many series had been shown on TV that I needed
to catchup on and it was better to simply rent these out with an online DVD
rental company. I don't recall any high street stores renting out series
box sets but things may have changed since I last went into one.
However, since then I have found that sometimes its annoying to wait for the
series box set to come through. For example, I have waited for the third
series of 24 for around 6 months now.
I have changed a few things since joining ScreenSelect:
1) Got some rerecordable DVD-RW and a big hard drive and basically save the
DVDs on the hard drive to burn onto DVD at my own leisure so I can send the
DVDs back a.s.a.p. to get maximum turnaround. However, I think that
ScreenSelect lower your priority once you average over 19 DVDs / month for
the rest of the month. But 19 is okay.
2) Pause the subscription at certain times of the year (e.g. September) when
new series that I like to watch come out on TV, e.g. Stargate and Stargate
Atlantis as I don't have that much time to watch the DVDs as well.
3) Buy a cheap VCR and look up Radio Times for when a series starts that I
have not yet watched rather than paying ScreenSelect for it. Some series
like 24 are hard to determine as their titles are 8:00, 9:00 etc, but most
other series are searchable and just put a reminder to get the VCR to
auto-record them and the Sky box to autoview/series link when they are on
TV.

Series 3 of 24 is highly recommended! My plan was to stack copies on
my HD and play through more or less continuously over some dark damp
weekend, but I found that idea too demanding on time so watched one
episode per day (more or less). It took a while to get all the DVDs
through to be copied to HD (you can skip disk 7 as it's all special
features).
Great story lines - better by far than the previous series!

Also, folks who are after less mainstream releases, perhaps because
they've missed them at the local arthouse cinema, they don't have such a
cinema, or the film is actually a concert or similar.

That's pretty good value; my local video shop quite a poor selection
(kids' films, current blockbusters, pr0n and horror) and charges 3.25 per
night. I can't see them lasting long, now.
