Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder From Costco
Did anyone buy one of these from Costco around 15/18 months ago?
If so how much did you pay?
I had to return mine with a fault and they refunded 234.98, I
couldn't find the receipt so just took the money.
When I returned home and started thinking about it I'm sure I paid
around 300 for it.
Cheers

Contact your bank and ask for a copy of the bank statement for the time you
paid for it (assuming you didn't buy anything else at the same time).
However given that the cost of that DVD recorder is less than 220 online -
I don't think you've got much to complain about.

The fact you lost your receipt, means you get the current selling price,
this is pretty standard. if fact, you had no way of proving you even
bought it from Costco, they would have been within their rights to refuse
refund totally, and referred you to the manuafacturer for warrenty
repair...
Always keep the receipt somewhere safe for big purchases...

Like putting it into a polythene bag and sello-taping it to the bottom or
side of the unit, avoid any ventilation holes.

Been to Costco today, and what you have been credited is the price of the
current model they are selling - Panny DMEH50 I think. That is retailing at
234.98. My guess is the price for your one was not on the system, or
someone didn't check the codes very well. I was in Oldham & they had plenty
of stock.

I don't think that is correct.
From DTI Fact Sheet:
http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/facts/salegoodsact.htm
Do I have to produce a receipt to claim my rights?
"No. In fact the trader doesn't have to give you a receipt in the first
place so it would be unfair to say that you had to produce one. However, it
might not be unreasonable for the shop to want some proof of purchase, so
look to see if you have a cheque stub, bank statement, credit card slip
etc., and this should be sufficient."
Having a receipt just cuts out the hassle of trying to prove ownership.

Yes, but the OP simply walked into the shop with nothing, so was very

Yes but you need your id card to get a refund with Costco so he obviously
had something. Their system should have the OP's past purchases.
Granted with any other shop they would probably have told him to "sling his
hook" ;o)

So when you get burgled (hope not!) the thief can show *his* customer
the original receipt for the nicked item he's selling?
IMO Better to keep receipt glued to the instruction book.

Costco give an indefinite guarantee on electrical goods (ex TVs 3
years).
I returned a 4 year old camcorder last year without receipt and was
given a full refund, If I could have remembered how much I paid for
the Dvd recorder I would have argued the point.
Which was the point of my original post.

You're paying way over the top for a DVD recorder. They retail from 89.99
and are OK, you can even get them for 129 in Curry's, Dixons etc. If you
want a try before you keep get it from Argos. If you don't like it and
return it for a refund, someone else just buys it thinking it's new after
it's been repackaged. I have bought second user stuff from Argos before
when it was sold as new! If it had a twin freeview tuner, hard drive and
DVD recorder then i would agree that 200 is a realistic price. Current
prices will not come down and new models will not be kept at a sensible
price until all the old stock we're currently buying has gone.

He was talking 18 months ago when these units cost at least 250 then.
Not all DVD recorders are created equal therefore justifying it's price. You
may or may not know that this unit is also capable of DVD-RAM
playback/recording and time shifting.

Did they not scan your card ?
Their computer holds everything you bought and at what price you paid for
it.
I have one which I paid 234.98 (199.99+VAT) in Feb 2004.

They did scan the card but they usually get you to sign for the
refund, it just seemed too hastily done, like they couldn't be
bothered. They didn't even check the contents of the box.

That was around the same time I bought mine, so it must be right.
The old memory ain't what it used to be!
Anyway after getting the refund I purchased the JVC model with the
250gb hard drive, not sure weather I like it or not yet.
Picture quality seems a bit iffy.
I'll play around with it for a few more days if it hasn't improved
it's going back (they have a 15 day change of mind policy)
