Ford Escort TDI
Hi
I now live in Sunny Spain.
Monday was warmer than usual and I was stuck in a traffic queue, not
very common in this part of Spain.
The car had been ticking over for a while and the traffic was crawling.
I started to move and suddenly the revs went up to max and stayed
there. I quickly switched off!
Restatrted and all was back to normal.
This happened on several seperate occasons all under the same
circumstances.
Any suggestions as to the cause of the problem and the cure.
Cheers

can be oil leaking in to the combustion area and burning

Re: Ford Escort TDI
I`ve noticed that the sump oil level is above the max mark, slight
overfill :-), can this be the indirect cause?
How does `oil leaking into the comustion aera and burning` cause this
problem?
Exciuse my ignorance if I should know the answer.

It's normally caused by the turbo seals leaking, and is generally
accompanied by excess blue smoke out the exhaust.
What colour are the exhaust gases when it revs up?
blue = oil burning (turbo, breather problem)
black = excess fuel

Black, I think, I switch off as soon as it starts happening, makes a
frightening sound at those revs.

Something I should off picked up on before is that it stops as soon as you
switch it off.
If it was burning oil, it would continue to run on even after turning the
ignition off.
Does this engine have a throttle cable, or is it fly-by-wire?
If it's got a throttle cable then it's likely an injection pump fault.
If it's fly-by-wire then it could be a faulty throttle position sensor, but
the ecu should go into a fail safe mode if it detects a fault. Failing that
then it's most likely an injection pump fault.
Other than those suggestions, I can't think off any other fuel system fault
that would cause the engine to rev at full revs.

Re: Ford Escort TDI
Hi
THanks for the info.
Ity continues to run for a second or two after switch off, but not for
long.
It has a throttle cable.
The injection pump has recently been rebuilt and serviced at a cost of
200 Eouros approx £140
Cheers

Did the fault occur before the pump was rebuilt?

Re: Ford Escort TDI
Hi Moray
The fault has ony ocurred since the pump was rebuilt.
I hasn`t occurred since the 3 occasions on Monday but I haven`t been
stuck in any traffic queuse since then.

I'd get it towed to a garage ASAP. Stopping the engine at high revs is a
surefire way to knacker the turbo bearings.

Sounds very much like an injection pump fault.
Think it's time to take it back to whoever rebuilt it last.

Re: Ford Escort TDI
Hi Moray
Thanks for the advice.
I will take it back to the garage when they return from holiday.
A lot of businesses close down for August here in Spain.
Too hot to work.
Cheers

It is. 87K. Three turbos. Golf TDI.
I figured out what the Muppet driving it was doing. Pulls into car park
with high throttle. Stops engine. Stops car.
The fleet manager had to physically restrain me from screaming at the arse.
So we bought him a Golf SDI as a replacement <mwahahahahahahahaahahahah
*cough*>, which solved the problem, although he screamed chuff about it. :)

You had to have all three turbos replaced on a Golf TDI? I thought they
only had one. :-)

That'll be the type of idiot that thinks "it's modern, so it shouldn't go
wrong, it's obviously crap", then.

They were every other service items.
He never checked the oil, never did anything actually.

There's a difference between the two?
