Hi



My old man is an architect and takes a lot of photos of sites and existing
buildings. He wishes to now use a digital camera to take photos and a
printer to print off the photos.



The camera is sorted but needs a printer. The printer needs print pictures
which are clear and economical to run, use separate colour ink cartridges
for each colour. Cheaper replacement cartridges would be great along with a
long life span.





Any suggestions or a point in the right direction would be great

I have the Epson R300 which can print good quality pics, and compatable 
carts are easy to get, I think you can get the printer for around 90 now, 
it also prints direct to CD.
Although you say your "old man" takes lots of pics, if thats the case then 
he would be cheaper taking the memory card to "Boots" or similar for 
processing.

Anything but Lexmark!

Epson has the head in the printer, mine got blocked and a repair was more 
than a new printer. HP has head in the ink cartridge, so every new ink gets 
a new print head.
BUT, as already answered by someone else, it is far cheaper to go to 
Sainsbury's and use one of those machines by plugging the memory card in. 
Usually cheaper than the special paper alone!

That depends on the quality of prints and sizes he wants to achieve. Using
compatible cartridges and paper from the cheaper sources it is possible to
produce acceptable prints for less than the cost of  Boots etc. I produce
acceptable 6 X 4 family photo prints for less than 5p per image. Larger
prints (e.g. A4) tend to be much more expensive from Boots etc.

Why separate colour cartridges? Separate ink cartridges are more expensive
per millilitre of ink than integrated cartridges. Unless you having unusual
requrements so that you print one colour much more than the others then all
the colours tend to last as long as each other.

Really? Combined cartridges tend to include the printhead,
seperates tend to be just the ink in a plastic container.
That should make seperates cheaper per ml !

No, its rare for your usage pattern to be so even.
The thing is, you rarely print a pure ink colour, and yellow is a
mixer colour, so it always runs out first.

e.g.:
red is magenta + yellow
green is cyan + yellow

I`ve always tended to use nearly 2x as many yellow carts as
magenta or cyan, accross different printers, for fairly standard use:
general web printouts & photos.

On printers with integrated colour carts, its the same,
the cyan is always wasted.

 I have a canon S500 and am very happy with print quality . It also uses
seperate cartridges. I buy the aftermarket ones off ebay very cheaply
indeed.

Depends on the printer. Epson and Canon printers do not include the
printhead. HP do. Clearly cartridges with integral printheads will be more
expensive. The OP was looking for cheap replacement cartridges so that would
exclude those with integrated printheads. My comparison was between the two
types of cartridge neither with printheads but one type has all 3 (or 5)
colours in the same cartridge whereas the other only one colour. The two
types have similar amounts of ink (per colour) and they are similar in
price, so the combined cartridges printers are cheaper to run.

Your experience is different from mine and other friends who have separate
colour printers mainly Epson R300/200.

Everyone I know uses more yellow than any other colour -
how marked the difference is does vary though.

Cyan and magenta are usually identical low usage.

On 6 colour printers its LM and LC first, before yellow...

I agree, I love the R200 that I've got.  Printing on cds and dvds is a good 
bonus too!  I managed to get *five* sets of six cartridges (= 30 cartridges) 
for 20 on ebay, so cheap ones are about.
