306 TD Rear Brakes
Ho hum, after the last big service the local garage advised that the
rear shoes were on their way out (fair enough at 120k) and the rear
cylinders need doing at the same time. Unfortunately they quoted 210
quid for the work!! I've decided to do it myself, but I have a couple of
queries...
Looking on brakeparts.co.uk and eurocarparts.com there seems to be a lot
of brake manufacturers doing the same parts eg Girling/Bendix etc. Does
it matter which ones I get, and if it does, can I tell which ones I need
before I take the hubs off? Total part cost should be about 50-60 quid,
which puts the quote into perspective.
Does the group recommend replacing the hub nuts?
Anybody got any general tips for doing the work? It looks pretty simple.

Are the back brakes on 306s as variable as the fronts? Friends with them
have had all sorts of jollies trying to get the right front brake bits since
there were so many different sorts.
cheers,

Re: 306 TD Rear Brakes
find out how long it will take toorder the various parts depending on make
remove your components
take them to the supplier
tell them to order you the right ones
wait
fit
bed in

I was thinking of ordering over the Net, making "taking it to the
supplier" a bit of a problem. Supply time not a problem as I have
alternative transport.

how will you know you have ordered the correct parts then?
i've found out the hard way that you should really pull apart what you need
to replace in order to find out which make you need to order
in your case it may just be a matter of removing the drums and things are
fine, but in some cases the bit's and bobs that go with it don't
interconnect when you substitue a bendix for a girling cylinder for example

Well part of my question was "is there a difference?", for all I knew,
Bendix and Girling might have been interchangeable. This sounds like I
will have to strip one side of the brakes and take a trip to Halfrauds
and pay extra for the privilege. At least part of my question has been
answered. As part of the service the lip was ground off the drums, so I
shouldn't be struggling to take them off, assuming I have a correct
sized socket.
Thanks for the answers so far.

Hi,
I guess I will have to replace my 306's rear brakes at some point. The
Haynes book says that you should replace the hub nuts, ( although mine
look as if they have been used at least twice...) it's typical, if you
want somthing doing properly do it yourself! Are you sure they need
doing, the front pads on mine seem to be lasting very well, it is a
light car after all. There does not seem to be a way to check the shoes
though. Oh BTW the haynes book also says that you can poke a
screwdriver in there to hold the shoes together incase there is a lip
on the drum.. Might as well replace drum as well ?

My local CitFixer just lobs the drums in the lathe to give them a quick
clean and remove the lip.
Of course, this presupposes that you have a lathe, but "Every Gentleman
should own a Lathe".

I would, but I seem to be struggling to find a lathe in the first place :(

well this should be all the excuse I need to get a lathe in my living
room then ;)
