If KH had got her citronella round her ankles and the anklebiters were about
I found Vaseline on the door handles worked a treat....

Mr Pinny and I listened to the news reports on American telly, about the
"Sub-mar-een-ers". We thought that the correct pronunciation for this is
"sub-MARRiners" as in Ancient (Sub-)Mariners, but unfotunately the BBC
only referred to them as the crew of the submarine. (Clearly they
weren't risking it.)

I'd love to hear if they were Cumbrian, and also what the thoughts are
on the pronunciation of this. It's a shame that Johnny, with his
nautical ancestry and linguistic feet on both sides of the Pond, is
presently beached up the River. How's that for metaphoric contortions?

I've always said "sub-MARRiners" and can't remember hearing it pronounced
another way.

Look at the "Russian president thanks rescuers" item, it mentions a Cumbrian
firm

I have a similar problem. I frequently waken up at 2, 3 or 4am, and I'm
plum tuckered by 9pm. I think that's why I didn't really feel jet lagged
when I visited Keswick. I was already on British Summer time, 5 hours

Hey, I don't like it either, but I'll sing The Wild Rover for anyone who
wants at two quid a time. Easy - if somewhat boring - money.

Let's see - it's only got 4 verses and 4 choruses - can't take more than 2
minutes to sing the whole song. If I sang it continuously for an hour, each
time lasting 2 minutes, I'd make 60. 60 an hour isn't bad money. After an
average 8 hour day I'd have earned 480. That's over 2000 a week. I could
cope with that for a wee while: stick all my takings in the bank until I
really did have the screaming heeby-jeebies from singing the same dreadful
song repeatedly for several weeks, but then I'd be rich so I could retire
early, move to an island in the sun and sing the songs I really liked for
free.

Well, if it wants screwing up I can think of noone better than thee. But as
for where, I can think of numerous places. Hows about the back of the
bathroom door for His 'n' Hers bath-robes fer now. Or maybe on the verandah
to hang towels for when the puddles start to form....

God, I'm tired. Av jus' wokken up. Fell asleep at 5 right after me tea.

The Yanks are planning to cause global warming on Mars, using the
atmospheric pollutants created in the manufacture of microprocessors,
and melt its polar icecap. Thereby they hope to creat an atmosphere
which could sustain a 7/11 and a WalMart, which would meet most human
requirements, depending on Martian liquor licensing laws.

Oops, sorry, wrong rover. You were talking about the *Irish* one, whereas I
was remembering the *Wild* one. The Irish one is definitely longer, and I
particularly don't like it because there's a character in it somewhere
called, "Johnny McGurk who scared stiff of work..." which is a terrible slur
upon my clan, all of whom are very industrious and hard workers to a man.
And a woman.

Hiya Edith,

Had the day off work today, walked too far on Saturday and the arthritis has
flared up :-(

I could barely move my left leg on Saturday evening and all day Sunday, my
knee and hip were so stiff, been taking quite a few ibuprofen since then and
it's getting better, should be able to drive to work tomorrow!

GP told me off this morning for not swallowing my pride and getting a bus or
taxi home! But apart from crippling myself, it was a good walk and I had a
great pub lunch and found another geocache!

How's you, enjoy your trip to Cumbria?

Andy - on his wireless laptop

That's funny. My neck shoulder and fingers haked something awful last night
and kept me awake. I was only one step away from insanity so off I went to
the doctor to tell my tale. I didn't get by reseption but the reseptionist
looked at my hand and said tale one ibrufen and a paracetamol, so I did
which put me on Rennies

for results.

I only want technical thingies with two buttons. On and Off.

Receptionists got the authority to diagnose and suggest medication? Hmmm,
let's hope they're aware of drug interactions then!

Ibuprofen's done wonders for me in the last 24 hours, Can flex my leg again
and drove ok this morning. What are Noni capsules, not heard of them?

They're natural something from a plant in Tahiti, awfully expensive but
maybe you can get off the chemicals with them, and they taste like ohh!
indiscribable bluggy awful. The juice is one step from camel pss. Deploring.

Good points. But they were cracked and had leaky valves when you
"sold" them to us. Actually, the truth is those four boats are
all different inside despite being called the same class. So
they are difficult to master and maintain. And the Canadian Navy
can't find enough people to crew them properly.

Did you hear we may be going to war with Denmark? A battle of
military titans to be sure. I hope we can count on Britain for
support just as we came to yours in WWI and WWII. Iraq is
another matter altogether.

That's what I like... unconditional support.

Whaaaat? A war between Canada and Denmark? Sounds like one of the early
rounds of the World Cup. What on earth would you be fighting about?

But as far as I know Canada is still part of the rapidly diminishing
Commonwealth, so I guess Britain would have to support you. (I still don't
understand the excuses for supporting the shrub's military endeavours,
though....) Poor old Denmark. What have they done to deserve this?

Maybe all the other Scandinavian countries would come in to support Denmark,
and then we'd find ouselves at war with Norway. Edith might not be allowed
to come home for a visit anymore. In fact she might be interned as an enemy
alien. Dear dear....

Is there still a Commonwealth? I think they still have the
Commmonwealth Games but they are just so some of us can win at
something because the Americans aren't invited.

Oh, I hope not. I have a friend in the Norwegian Navy. I think
most of those countries couldn't give a toss about each other
actually. They sure joke about each other enough.

Gives a better idea and the wikipedia entry has some good stuff:

Looks like it all boils down to some suit avoiding the issue when the

Right. They didn't realise the potential for transport, oil and
minerals back then. Neither could be arsed to assume
responsibility for it then. Now they are both sending military

I don't know if you've ever watched a bar full of Danes watch their
national team play football. It's really wierd. We were in France,
during the World Cup in 1998. We stopped at a campsite half way between
Zeebrugge and the Italian frontier, and Mr P soon found the campsite bar
which had a TV to watch that evening's game, alongside a large party of
Danes, who were also passing through. They sat there with their
pressions, and when their team scored a goal they remained in their
seats, smiling and clapping their hands with interest, but total
composure and politeness, as if they were maths teachers at a school
concert.

(It was a Danish ref who gave the Argies the game against England and
knocked us out of the tournament, and we had to cheer for Holland and
Croatia. I can nurse a grudge like the best of 'em.)

Aww. That was so sad, Ally. When I first arrived in Keswick and phoned it
was while you were dealing with the loss of one of them.

Surely there are kittens close by that need to be adopted by a loving
person.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? I guess if I started phoning round the animal
rescue charities I'd track some down, but I'm still holding out for kittens
that sort of find me, rather than the other way about. Every time I hear
about a litter I'm just too late - they've all been homed.

I understand. The best dog we had was Ginger. She was found (or should I
say she found us) down by the river. Someone had just dumped her and the
rest of the litter there. A Collie and German Shepherd mix, fantastic with
kids, very loving and loyal dog.

Steve tells the story of how when he was a kid, and their cat had died, he
went for a walk shortly after the sad event and found a kitten by the road,
lost. Probably someone had thrown it out of a car or something. It lived
with them for years, and was still there, a very elderly, wise cat, when I
first met him.

When we still had all 3 cats there was a stray which kept wandering into the
house on summer nights when we left the back door open. Our cats chased it
of course. Now that I'd *like* a stray to wander in, it never happens...

They can tell you're brooding.... Broody women can be hell... Maybe you just
scare them off.

I may end up doing this. Though I'm very specific about what I want. I don't
want to rehome a grown-up cat with hang-ups. I want 2 kittens, brother and
sister, who can spend a happy and long life together. I don't mind taking in
second-hand dogs (I've already done my bit there!) but I want *new* cats...

Hows the weather on the fjord? It's gorgeous here again today.
Been another great week. Last week we had a cool few days but
it's been nearly perfect since then.

These Cumbrians seem to think summer is over.

Hello Johnatan. We had a rain storm a couple of days ago, had to hang onto
my markiser while I wound them in, then today the sun came up and people are
still bathing in the fjord.

Lovely. We've been for coffee and cakes at my son's house to celebrate his
yesterday's birthday and I'm propp full of cakes-again. I went to town today
and people were sitting outside the cafes again.

My new specs arrived from England yesterday. Mentioning cash, the whole
alabaloo cost only 4000 NOKs compaired to 7500 NOKs without the eye test.
Much cheaper even including my flight.

Thumbs down for Norway.Gees! Ripoffland.

Nice to hear your weather has improved if not your spelling.

Is it just me or does your son always have a party going on at
his house?

And I'm impressed you beat the Norwegian eyeglass syndicate out
of a few NOKs and had a holiday to boot.

Perhaps when you need your dentures replaced you could swing a

Bwaaahahahaaaa. You're funny. I tried it. I just wasn't accepted in so short
notice.

My son is very sociable. He really impressed me yesterday evening, with his
white shirt and tie and new black suit. He is in reception during the
weekend and behind the bar, night shift, 200 guests, at The Grand Ocean
Hotel as he has Watchman/politi thingie schooling for it and works 7 days a
week at his old job and has his little lad every other week and on
Wednesdays. He's a good lad. Good pickings if some nice girl should come
along, not one with a sweet smile and dollars flashing in her eyes but one
with her feet on the ground and a decent education and not even that if she
can treat him well and genuinely care for him. Do such young ladies exist
any more, Johnny?

I bought a nice warm jacket at one of the hippy stalls at SolFest today.
Made in Nepal. All knitted brightly coloured wool with a fleece lining.
Lovely. I've been wearing it ever since. I can't believe I need something as

Oh shut up, you and your proper long hot summer....

Mind you, it's been really nice today. Sunshine and clear blue skies. Just
perfect for the August Bank Holiday. And tonight the sky is perfectly clear
and full of stars. I stood at the back of my house earlier and gazed at the
Milky Way, blazing brightly overhead. It's not often you see it so clearly.
Must go out for a bit more before I go to bed.

Sounds like you did pretty well. Do the Hippy Stalls supply underwear?
I understand from my mother-in-law (who thinks that I might need
emergency supplies from the UK) that there isn't a pair of knickers to
be had in Britain at present, thanks to the embargo on Chinese clothing
imports. If anyone's really desperate, contact me. I have Macy's. You
can often get some great Three for the price of two deals on their
occasional bonus sale days.

It's 76 degrees at 20:31 local time here in Lawn Guy Land, and
unpleasantly sticky.

Everything is fine in hot sticky Satsuma. I noticed a cool breeze (well
relatively cool compared to the ambient 95) on the third level of the car
park at lunch time today and there were a few cool gusts while pumping
petrol at 6 pm other than that its normal.

Colder here, Jp. 10C+ when I got up at 7 am. Now 12C+ lots of birds
gathering, eating anything they can find.

When I was in USA there were so many beautiful garments in the shops. Things
you could only dream of here. The lady in Kentucky loaned me her night gown
and dressing gown set, it was brown silk and beautiful.

Edith-none feminine clothes land and cheap, less quality import land.

See? It's not all bad. Of course, we have the good daytime
weather and the clear skies at night. Except for the next few
days as Katrina blows through.

The Rolling Stones have been in town. They did a concert Sunday
evening and have stayed to shoot a video. If it wasn't for
Katrina, I don't think we'd be getting any news of the world
other than the minute by minute movements of Mick, Charlie and
Keith. I'm not interested to be honest.

Thank goodness for streaming radio. BBC Radio Cumbria lead
story: Katrina.

I saw the Rolling Stones in Edinburgh when I was a young teenager. Twice.
*And* got my photo taken with Keith Richards. (Now if I could just remember
the very safe place I'd put it away in, I'd stick a copy of it on the net.)

It's a great place to buy a bargain. There are lots of Levi's outlets
and also discount stores, where you can stock up on Ralph Lauren and
DKNY, Liz Claiborne and very occasionally, a Dior off-the-rack, for peanuts.

Yes, and I treasure the photo I had taken with you, Kez. In fact, you can

whereas I haven't a clue where the one with KR is.

You'd need waterproof knickers to make a tent, and I don't think I want to

We went to a local village - Langham - event on Bank Hol Monday. They have
stalls outside every house to get rid of their rubbish. Maybe a balcony
sale for you? There was nothing half as interesting at Langham, as your junk
sounds.

Rex. I'm in shock. I have a room out in the outer hall where I put things I
don't need for the moment. I thought I'd go out there and tidy up and find
some fleas for the flea market. I phoned them. They don't accept fridges and
cookers-both working too-but they are red and I hate the colour of red.
Anyhow, I started to rummage and I have so much stuff that I don't need,
can't use, don't want to part with, but, but, that I almost had a seizure.
I'll need a container to get rid of everything. I can hardly get in there
and it's my painting room. I need a plan. Think Edith. Think.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOrly!!!!!!!! Oh, he's at work. Why do men always go to work

So do I, Rex. It's great fun. I have 3 bags of clothes, but no knickers.
Pieces of wood, a pile of old LPs that I plan to have recorded onto discs,
cushions, drawings/paintings, a set of drawers full of bottles ad bits and
pieces etc etc etc Whaaaaars the smelling salts!

If you were trying to get rid of cookers & fridges around here you'd get in
touch with a company at Flimby that recycle old white (or in this case, red)
goods. They train unemployed people to repair and refurbish things like
this, so if you bring in your old cooker, they'll strip it down, service it,
and sell it to someone who can't afford a brand new one, usually with a 3-
or 6-month guarantee. I think they're great!

There's also a thing called the FreeCycle network - www.freecycle.org -
where you can advertise things you don't want and others on the mailing list
can come and claim them. I'm getting rid of my old car this way
(hopefully... fingers crossed he takes it away...) (no, not the red one!)
FreeCycle has groups all round the world, and I notice there's an Oslo group
(the only one in Norway) here -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OsloFreecycle/ - with 29 members at the
moment. You have to be a member of Yahoo Groups to join, but there might be
someone in Oslo who's prepared to drive to Horten to pick up a free RED!!!
cooker & fridge.

I have a room like yours Edith. It's on top of the house. It's enormous and
it's full. It's called the attic. Oh dear....

They were last here 40 years ago when I was not yet a teenager.
So that means we can expect them back in 2045. I'll be in my
nineties and they will be over 100. You could get a 'then and
now' photo with Mick.

Oh CUSS! You didn't tell me about THAT room, grumble, buggery, grumble. Be
prepared!

We have a free recycle place just down the road. I can see the roof from my
front verandah. I've been hanging on to the fridge and cooker for a good
while because they're an expensive type. Nobody wants them so I'll have Orly
drive them down there on Thursday.

Aha! So you're not wanting to get rid of them after all! Thought not. You'll
just do as I do - open the boxes and bags, look at things for a while, put
them back in their boxes and stack them a bit more neatly than they were
before. You'll remove a very small carrier bag of stuff for charity, and a
smaller one for the rubbish bin. You'll have spent a whole day doing this,
and you'll feel sort of like you've done something useful, but all you'll
have is almost the same amount of junk as previously, but in different
piles, and you'll maybe have cleared a few square feet of floor space in the
process. This new space will, of course, fill up with new junk over the next
few weeks, when you'll find you've actually got *more* junk than you had
before you had your clear-out.

The fridge doesn't have a freeze box but would be perfect if I filled it
with beer cans. Trouble is, it's big, very tall.

It runs in our family. I still have the boxes my parents filled with stuff
that's too interesting to chuck out without some serious sorting through.
And if you think that's bad enough, I also have a couple of trunks of my
granny's stuff, a box of books and assorted paraphernalia belonging to my
great-grandfather and a suitcase full of papers from my late auntie's late
husband. In our family, we hoard other people's hoardings. The trouble is,
some of this stuff is really quite old now, and probably worth a bit of
money. Even the receipt issued when my granny first got electric light put
into our flat in Edinburgh in 1927 is probably of value to a collector.
Hell, it's of value to me, still. It's family history. How many people have
still got things like that?

All I remember of Mic Jagger was from his girly years when me Dad sat
watching TV , with a mug o tea in his hand, has he used to do and on TV
crowds cheering for Mic when on comes Jagger - in a dress - und me Dad sez,
"That's bloody awful. It's disgusting." I spent the rest of that summer
wondering if Mic had an inward curve or an outward curve. After "Little Red
Rooster" it was hard to fathum.

Crawling all over me when I roll on the grass; sleeping in my lap; my two
favourite ones cuddling up asleep on my pillow at night....

I couldn't eat one.

No, I'm sure I couldn't...

My front windowsill is decorated with hundreds of squirrels: toys,
ornaments, cups, paintings....

Does that make me a squirrophile (or should that be ickorniphilus)?

I've got a stuffed red squirrel in the kitchen. It's one of the few toys
that's not playing a sax. I collect sax-playing things. I've got Lisa
Simpson (of course - she is my hero), and Disney's goofy with a sax, and
various things like pot teddy bears with saxes, and a wee chap that came
free with Tetley teabags with a sax, and er... then Steve has a load of
sax-playing ornaments in his workshop as well. But the squirrel is saxless.
A saxless squirrel. Hmm.

I got three stuffed red ones, and I had three stuffed greys but I gave my Ma
one who lives in 'Squirrel Cottage'... and I've a Kezzi and Kai Hsia pair. A
gift from me to she on our wedding day...

I do have room for a tent actually!

One November 1st, I noticed shredded sweetie wrappers on the ground
under my tree, and wondered for a moment how on earth they'd got there.
I wondered if someone was secretly going behind my shed to eat sweeties,
and being careless with the evidence. Then I noticed another wrapper
suddenly flutter down like a gaudy yellow autumn leaf. Up in the
branches the squirrels were busily unwrapping their booty which the kids
had dropped the night before while trick-or-treating.

Nice? Nice? It's darned cute, that's what it is. I won't bother with a tent.
I'm going to sleep under the stars and let the squirrels cover me with sweet
wrappers...

I think the squirrels keep the same hours as we do. Raccoons are busy at
night.

Just got to my email.... 01:30 Sunday morn.... It's bin a busy old day.

My eldest daughter and beau have bought a new house on Walney which,
hopefully, will put off the impending wedding for a few years whilst they
refence the garden, build a patio and conservatory and invest in some
serious training for that mad puppy they bought!! And they've both decided
to take driving lessons 'cos with hindsight Walney was a stupid move when
they used to be central to Barrow and both close to work!

Anyway, they've been having a turf out of old furniture and crap as they've
fitted new, including the computers, so I've been round there drinking tea,
admiring the fence builders, getting pi$$ed on by a mad pup - and bought two
PC video editing suites for 45!! Made 90 on one monitor on the way home!!!
I guess it'll eventually get stuffed into this blinking wedding fund....
"Don't do it", we cry!!

Went for a Chinese at 'Singapore George's' in Barrow. It was absolutely
crap. Won't be going there again. Kai Hsia thinks it's great to meet people
from Singapore in the UK and talks their legs off... When I'm abroad I avoid
Englischers like the plague!

Spent the rest of the night in front of the box asleep. Now I'm wide awake
and KH is IM'ing for the hell of it. I caught her out last night by signing
in under an alias and chatting her up. Even though she ended up believing
that she had been stalked by this guy who knew to many 'uncomfortably
personal' things about her she was swept of her feet by this fictional young
stud.... I'll have to teach her a lesson and take Ally to Nottingham ;)

Anyway, more mail to read. Might be back. Might not. Busy day tomorrow. I
have finished the plans for the studio after 4 years and we finally start to
rebuild. Have to strip all of the equipment from the front room and find
somewhere to store it all. Sometimes I miss the bigger house but with all
the kids gone it was stupid rambling around in a 5-bedder with 11' ceilings
and extortionate fuel bills....

Back soon...

That would be fun if there was anything I wanted to teach Steve, but
fortunately (or unfortunately - take your pick...) he behaves impeccably and
I've never caught him chatting up anyone of the opposite gender. I think
he's of the same opinion as I: it's hard enough work finding one person
who's prepared to put up with you, without expending energy finding a second
one. So we're monogamous because we're both too lazy to be anything else.

Anyway.... Nottingham? If I was up for a dirty weekend it'd have to be
somewhere a *lot* more exciting than Nottingham...

Sometimes I miss the bigger house but with all

I miss my 11 foot ceilings in Edinburgh. I used to be able to hang all my
paintings. Now there's not enough wall space. And I miss my kitchen
pulley... (but I've already bored everyone silly with that one...)

If you do fancy Nottingham, take your bulletproof vest with you. Judging by
the midlands news that city is now the gun capital of the midlands.
