GNER Moving To VV Type Tickets?
An article in the current GNER 'Livewire' magazine:
"Finding a great-value fare shouldn't be taxing - that's why GNER is
changing to a simplified range of reduced-price fares that are as easy
to understand as they are to book.
"The new fares will replace the current Off Peak (First and Standard),
Apex, SuperAdvance and Leisure First fares from September 25. From that
date, there will be just one consistent set of terms and conditions, and
all prices will be quoted in single fares, normally priced at half the
current return equivalents.
"This will enable you to mix and match outward and return journeys more
easily, offering greater freedom in choosing when you travel. It also
means you can shop around for cheaper fares if you are prepared to be
more flexible with your travel plans - in fact, GNER will be offering
its cheapest-ever fares for passengers making a single journey.
"Some cheaper tickets may be available up to the day before departure -
although, obviously, the sooner you book, the better your chance of
getting a lower fare."

LOL.... the game of "spot the nineteen quid York to London return" has
been somewhat akin to hunting needles in haystacks lately, let's hope
there's a slightly more transparent structure. Oh and let's hope there's
still cheap first-class fares - GNER first class can be one of the best
bargains on the rails.

I've always found getting GNER cheap tickets relatively easy. Look on
the GNER homepage and see what dates they're currently booking tickets
for. If tickets are being booked for the date you want to travel and
there's no cheap ones available then I've always presumed that they're
sold out. If they're not booking yet then fill the form in and they'll
email you and let you know when.
I've never bought VV tickets but from reading people's experiences on
here, VVs seem to be a pain in the bum - constantly going back and
seeing if new tickets have been released etc.

They're also covered in the latest issue of Newsrail Express.

Good to see it. Now, can we have the same approach for Opens, Savers
and the likes?

It's quite easy:
1) Fill in the "Now Booking" ticket quota release date thingy on GNER's
Homepage for the date(s) you want to travel on.
2) Get E-mail for GNER saying you can now book your tickets
3) Pop down to station travel centre in lunch hour
4) Walk out with a 19ukp return to London
Worked for me!

I read this as meaning that I will no longer be able to get a 1st
class off-peak return from Leeds to London for 59 (or maybe even 79)
if I book it far enough in advance.
So many GNER trains are so full that this can only be an exercise in
fare increases, rather than decreases.

Correct. Instead, you should be able to get two Singles, costing around
29.50 each. Maybe. If you're lucky. But don't hold your breath.

But you might be able to get the GBP29.50 ticket on one leg of the journey,
but either pay more, or slum it in standard, the other way. At present you
won't get a GBP59 ticket if there's availability one way but not the other.

It was widely recognised, when GNER won the franchise renewal as the
result of paying a huge premium, that they would have to get more money
from the passengers to make their business plan viable.

Re: GNER Moving To VV Type Tickets?
A few more details on the change.
Their will be three tiers of off peak fares in Standard, and five tiers in
First.
All the fares will be available until 23:59 the day before travel. So if
they haven't sold all of the cheapest fares they will available past the
current two week deadline and they can be sold until they sell out, and so
on until with the others.
However if booked after 18:00 the day before travel, you will only be
reserved on the train concerned and will not be guaranteed a seat
reservation.

I suspect that it is not a W (doubleyou) but a V.V. (vee vee) type
ticket - V.V. stands for Virgin Value, and is a ticket that requires
you to book in advance, and is only valid on one train, which you must
choose at the time of booking. Some operators have other names for
this kind of ticket, including SuperAdvance and Apex.

SuperAdvance and Apex are return tickets, while VVs are singles (but
usually bought in pairs)

SuperAdvance and Apex tickets are usually available as singles or
returns.

Indeed, but not normally where return=2*single in price terms. This
is one of the key (and best) properties of the Virgin Value ticketing.

Re: GNER Moving To VV Type Tickets?
New ticketing arrangements worked for me - was able to travel Stevenage
- Newcastle and return for £19 for the first weekend in Coctober.
There did not seem to be any cheap deals available in first class,
though, nor any ability to buy upgrades as you can with Virgin Values.
Or had the quota not been released?
