Carstairs Junction
Greetings

It is well-known that Carstairs is evil, except for direct WCML trains.
However, I noticed that there is a very old formation that seemed to
provide a much better aligned link from the northbound WCML towards
Edinburgh.

This old formation linked the WCML to the line towards Edinburgh in a
single turnout, and then a nice straight run joining the present alignment
just past the Big House. A lot of the embankment is now gone, so the
track must have been lifted a long time ago.

Any ideas why or when, anyone?

The only entry for Carstairs on
www.closedlines.free-online.co.uk/gb_sc_x.htm says 1950. Is this the
route to which you refer?

I don't think it's that one. The line mentioned by the OP was closed
before that - perhaps even in the 19th century - but I don't know when.
